    MS Outlook Question

    Calling all computer gurus out there!

    Have a real pesky problem with Outlook on both a Windows 7 & a Windows XP machine. Whenever I punch up Outlook to Send/Receive I get a pop up window that asks me for a 'Network Password'

    Now, I've double checked all is good with the two email programs in gmail I use re the pop/imap configurations so it's not a function of a email program. This was confirmed too by checking online that others seem to have had this problem and no satisfactory solution (that I could find) was achieved.

    Again, changing passwords in the email programs - in this case gmail but reading those responses from others with this problem it's common to all - Yahoo Mail, Hotmail etc. - has no effect. That pop up window keeps appearing and prevents you from sending/receiving mail into Outlook. Also, this problem doesn't appear to be a function of my ISP (TOT) as I can get online with no problem at all.

    Short of re-formatting MS Office in both my Windows 7 & Windows XP machines I'm hoping one of y'all have an easier solution?

    Thanks!
    BM

    It asks for a network password - how are you accessing the web? Try entering your wifi password?

    My wifi password is not the problem as this 'network password' cannot be 9 digits long. I've tried that but thanks for the fast reply!

    I can access the web from home or a Starbucks - anywhere there's a hotspot or even thru a LAN cable at my ISP.

    Completely dismiss outlook, msn, hotmail from your life Boons.

    Create a gmail account.
    Most allowances are easier to fcuk with.

    can you post a screenshot of the dialog box asking for the password ? I have an idea what it might be, quite easy to fix if that's it.

    RS - if you read my OP you'd see that the two email accounts in question are gmail.

    Re doing a screen shot - I've 'loomed' (forgot) how that's done. Give me a pointer there Butterfly and I'll put it up!

    do a "alt-fn-prt scr" on your keyboard and paste that in Paint and save it as JPEG

    "alt-fn-print scr" for the "active" objets to be copy
    "alt-print scr" for the whole screen to be copy

    Well, no luck in getting this dialog box converted into a JPEG so I'll describe it thus:

    * Enter Network Password

    * Please Type Your User Name and Password

    * Server: pop.gmail.com

    * Username (my email address)

    * Password: Whatever that is!

    Then there's a little box down in the left-hand corner you can click that says:

    Save This Password In Your Password List

    ok, go to Tools:Accounts and then the Mail tab

    select your default account for Gmail and click on "Properties" in the right pane

    then click on the Servers tab in that window and tell us what you see as parameters

    for the record, you should use IMAP, not POP for Gmail

    In your gmail account settings ONLINE at gmail.com, enable IMAP and disable POP.

    actually forget IMAP, might be too complicated for you to setup and use eventually

    I suspect one of your settings in "Accounts" is not set properly for your POP connection, let's try this first

    The thing is nothing was changed in the gmail settings. Both pop & imap configurations were left alone - both enabled - but looking at email accounts under tools I see that:

    Name = pop.gmail.com

    Type = pop/smtp (default)

    ok, that's not enough

    select "pop.gmail.com" and click on "Properties" and then check the "Servers" tab

    and then tell me what you see,

    at the very bottom you should see "My Server requires authentication" checked, click on the "settings" box next to it

    in the new window, make sure that the option "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected, if not, select it.

    I'm on the XP machine right now and don't see "Properties" or "Server" tabs? This is looking at "Tools" "Options" "Mail Setup" etc...

    When you return to the main "servers" tab, make sure the Username and password under "Incoming Mail Server" is correct and enable the option "Remember password".

    Do NOT "enable" the option "Log on using Secured Password Authentication"

    read again my instructions, it's Tools:Accounts not Tools:Options

    the "Properties" is on the right pane where it says "pop.gmail.com (default)"

    try doing the screenshots, it would be easier or else your best option would be the local Somchai who is going to "format c:" your whole system ala Harrybarracuda because he can't figure out the small configuration details

    quick question, are you using Outlook Express or Outlook from office ? I suspect Outlook Office,

    in that case, it is in Tools:Options, sorry about that Boon

    I did and when I click on Tools: Accounts the box comes up stating "you can select an account and change its settings or remove it"

    Then, we get to the statement: "Outlook processes email for these accounts in the following order"

    Name: pop.gmail.com

    Type: pop/smtp (default)

    The options there are "Change" "Add" or "Remove"

    And then "Finish"

    For Outlook office, follow those instructions instead

    Tools:Options:Mail Setup:Email Accounts

    Heh...we're getting down to the real 'meat' now! LOL

    I'm using Outlook from the MS Office package. In this case it's Office 2003 but the other machine I'm having trouble with (Outlook) is version 2007 which is almost the same. That's running Windows 7.

    In the "Outgoing Server" tab, enable "my outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"

    and enable "use same settings as my incoming mail server" if it's not enabled already
