Phnom Penh is an absolute shithole

I had to do a quick visa run, tired of going Singapore, I decided to try again Phnom Penh because it was cheap and near, and perfect for my Visa Run tight budget (12,000 THB including hotel and flight ticket)

well that was until Blake7 decided to tag along, I knew that could turn into an expensive whoring trip, and it did

Despite going there before in early 2008, I didn't remember how poor and miserable the whole place was, this is by far one of the worst in the region. There is absolutely fuck all to do there, and it's very dirty. I can't imagine how expats or sexpats living there could even find this place to be attractive in any way, it's simply miserable. Crazy.

So since Blake7 was on board, whoring was on the main menu, so here we go looking for daytime actions. Since Teakdoor is very unreliable when it comes to good whoring recommendations, we had to go to the next best source (IWSG) and thank god the hotel had free WiFi internet.

So here we go, strolling the streets for a bit of tourism before going to the serious place. Unfortunately, when it comes to tourism, there is nothing really interesting to see, maybe the markets to eat local foods or some old buildings to look at, or the FCC for a pint of beer while looking down the river with garbage floating. I think the place looks worst than the first time I was there.

Anyway, we finally found some daytime actions, the infamous Walkabout. Despite a ratio of mingers of 10 to 1, and a string of tired old men passed out in their beer, the place had an interesting vibe. The girls there weren't shy, staring at you, and begging you for actions. The problem is they are all mingers, with a few passable ones. What to do ?

It was still early in the afternoon, so we decided to take 2 mingers back to the hotel, just to be busy for the rest of the afternoon, before the night falls and the real players are out.

Night time comes, and the plan is to try Sharkys, 104, Martinis, and if we have time Heart of Darkness. But first, Blake7 is starving and he needs his meals at 6pm like your typical English. Very annoying. So we decide to go to a very nice French restaurant, Le Deauville, extremely cheap with an excellent menu, and a decent wine list. After 2 bottles of wine, and a great meal, and a bit drunk, we decide to skip Sharkys and go straight to 104 which is only a few blocks away. That street 104 is quite small, and a bit slow in the early evening (9pm).

Rose Bar seemed to have changed quite dramatically, low ceiling instead of the nice high ceiling they had before, they were still remodeling. Very empty, with a few mingers sitting there bored. So we skipped the place. The bar "104" was better, more girls and some nice music. Zanzi Bar was the most fun, girls more friendly and more aggressive, however they didn't seem to go with customers for night time actions, or maybe we were too drunk for them to care. Time to go where the real players are, Martinis and Heart of Darkness.

So here we go to Martinis, and it's past 10pm, so perfect time to get the early birds, and the fresh catch. Plenty of girls, soliciting and not shy, it's a buyer market. You could almost open bids in an open market. Better looking birds inside the disco, nice to sit outside to chill out, have a drink and play pools. I quite like the disco, playing old crappy songs from the 80s and 90s, can't beat that shit. I think I finally find something I like.

Almost 12am, time to go to Heart of Darkness, Blake7 is miserable because he didn't find anything, and starts drooling over my catch. I was quite disappointed by Heart of Darkness, music was decent, but the club was quite small, and full of mingers and tired old men and a few odd couples of backpacker hippies looking for a place to chill out. Much worse than Martinis. Actually terrible and boring. Maybe it gets better on week-end, it was after all a week day. Decided to call the night as I already caught a bird at Martinis.

The next morning, Blake7 is still passed out from his Xanax night, apparently he needed the sleep, and I had a good night sleep and quite a good shag, a first I reckon for Cambodia. But what to do ? still one more full day to spend here with nothing much to do. Surely we can't go back to Walkabout ? we did that already. What about Sharkys ? time to hit IWSG for more useful recommendations

First, we went chilling out on those little bars near the river, they are quite nice, I enjoy them, nice to seat for a lazy afternoon and read a book. I have a ton of local money I want to give out to the poor little kids in the streets. So I am giving away 500 and 1000 to the kids, and they call their friends, and next thing I know they all come around me begging. So I give everything I have, and some keep asking for more, while others are quite happy with what they have. Blake7 is bitching, calling me an amateur, telling me it's pointless, that they probably get beaten up for more when they bring the cash to their pimp around the corner. I disagree, even though he has a point about begging not helping, but what to do ? watch those kids starving, and begging in the streets ? that's definitely not an option even though giving is not solving anything either,

it's almost 6pm, after checking out from the hotel, it's time to try Sharkys !!!

well, it's a sports bar, nothing is happening before 8pm, and the food is shit, almost got poisoned with some nasty Nachos. We play some pools, we watch the chaos of the streets as the night falls, it really feels like a complete shithole, a sense of perpetuing darkness with nothing good coming out of it.

Soon it's time to grab a taxi back to the Airport. We take a tuk-tuk, bad idea, the dirt and the garbage mixed together is making me sick. A lot of poor people living in the streets, and yet I haven't seen so many Lexus and Hummer in one place. I am quite happy to leave this shithole and come back to beautiful and civilized Thailand

Conclusion: PP is a shithole with nothing to do. Even the whoring is a bit lame and better girls can be found in Pattaya. Overall, the whole trip was expensive and didn't make any economic sense as a cheap tourist destination. Of course, I blew off my budget, but that was a given with Blake7. If I take out the nice meals we had and the cheap whoring, I spent 5000 THB on doing fuck all in 2 days, that is taking a few $1 taxi, drinking coffee, soda and 3 fucking beers !!!

I am pretty much done with PP. It's always nice to take a break from Thailand, and Bangkok is still a good value when it comes to whoring and quality of life. I was just happy to be home after this. Maybe I will try Sanookville next time.

actually, we were told about that place, and we wanted to check it out, but couldn't find it. We found another place near Walkabout that sounded promising, Shanghai, the girls in the afternoon seemed nice, but apparently they were staff only, not serving customers

I was afraid of that, but I thought that since the whole place was full of drunken old men and that nobody was really working, it wouldn't make much of a difference. Pattaya used to be like that, but not anymore, there is a week-end effect here like anywhere else.

I quite enjoy PP! I did not like it my first trip but it grows on you. Food is a bit more expensive as they import everything. Where else can you get a slab of beer lao for 14 usd, carton of melbrough lites for 8.50 usd and a LT for 20 usd, bar fine 5 usd. Cheap as chips mate!
