Thai Retail Sector on the Rise

    UPDATE : 18 April 2011

The Thai Retailers and Wholesalers Association is confident that the retail sector will expand in line with the economy, and hopes that the upcoming election will help increase purchasing power.

The Thai Retailers and Wholesalers Association, or TRA, president Somchai Pornrattanacharoen said that the Thai retail sector would expand to 1.5 trillion baht this year, an increase from the previous year.

He said the improvement in the condition of the Thai economy, along with the upcoming election, would help increase customer's purchasing power, thus benefiting the Thai retail sector.

He added that first quarter sales have expanded 10 percent already.

He said Thai retailers need to renovate their shop's images to keep up with the increased competition today.

He said all shops should change to a cleaner look, such as appearing brighter and more modern.

He added that they should not over-stock products to ensure that no old or low quality goods are sold.

Somchai went on to say that the government has not provided enough assistance to the retail sector.

He urged the government to distribute goods to both the retail and wholesale sectors evenly when there are shortages, as were seen recently with palm oil and sugar.

He said government aid is an important factor in helping push the Thai retail sector forward and making it strong in the increasingly competitive retail market.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

In one form or another, yes. Abhisit is busy pumping money into the economy so that simple folk feel their situation has improved. No doubt the diesel subsidy will be continued.

Of course all the subsidies will end after the election and prices will rise faster than ever.

The former Seri Center, now Paradise Park has been completely renovated and you can still shoot a canon off in there any weekday and nobody would hear it. No amount of renovation can change the fact that Seacon Square is right down the street with a retail mix that is more in line with average Thai incomes. Central Rama IX center opens at the end of the year and Cental Ladprao, which re-opens this summer, will dilute the sales at existing Bangkok metro shopping centers even more.
