If you're a baseball fan, yes- I learned some very interesting things about trades that I didn't previously know- on that basis, it's worthwhile- you might feel differently- it's a great look at the back-office world of MLB.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Is it worthwhile reading or has it been forever damaged by being a book we had to read

Well, back in the day when we were forced to read it (along with other such tombs such as James Joyce's "Ulysses") there probably wasn't the proper appreciation devoted to it so...to answer your question - not damaged!

Victorian era prose takes some getting used to though.

...don't believe I'll pick up "Ulysses" again any time soon tho.

If the plot and characters are developed well such as in "David Copperfield", it's no bother.

I have a copy of "Oliver Twist" as well and got 1/4 of the way into that before putting it down for 'later'. Dickens descriptions of endemic poverty in Victorian England are very stark and one wonders how the lower classes survived.

I was just reading ''Life of Samuel Johnson'' by James Boswell.
from project guttenburg , for out of copywrite books.
    http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1564
It was ok but for some reason last week I googled it, and came across this :

''The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. ''

And Now I haven't been able to pick it back up....

The human surplus was always used as cannon fodder for expansionism, more so than in other countries . . . and let's not forget setting up penal colonies in far-away lands (no, I have zero Brit nor Irish blood in my veins)

But yes, quite amazing how anyone could have lived there - and when you include the English weather and food (if they had any)!!!

^did the smelly fcukers give the world the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkin

Broughton_Jack-Thud_Ridge.epub - ok book from an american pilot flying from thailand during the vietnam war - he tape recorded in the cockpit so the events are well described

Bad Cop - Paul Bacon.epub - a short book about a man who became a NYPD cop for a short time - good read

Dirty_Wars_-_Jeremy_Scahill.epub - a well researched book about conflicts america is involved in in recent years - lots of info about somalia and yemen and facts about the drone strikes - insane what they have been fcuking up and continue to do so , and how much they cover up - especially by destroying anyone who tries to let the world know the truth
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Yes terrible conditions, I remember whilst at college reading
''The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by Friedrich Engels''
    http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17306

I think it was that book thats describes the adulteration of food , and it
makes McDonalds chicken nuggets look wholesome ( well almost).

On the other hand conditions were not so rosy for many in Australia 100 years or so ago.
Whilst there , I visited a museum in Kalgoorlie set up to show how gold miners lived .
A very harsh life for the man and wife - stinking hot - no refrigerators ,or washing machines -shoveling dust out of the house etc .

Well, some girl on a swiss forum is selling the trilogy of 50 Shades of Gray for 20 francs. When i thunk that to get all three would cost me at least 100 francs. I jumped at the chance.... not heard back from her yet...

I've been reading Joseph Anton: A Memoir. An autobiographical book by Salman Rushdie.
It's a good read, funny in places and not so funny to see the British government washing their hands of him and pandering to the Muslims.

Steve Jobs biography. Interesting read and characters.

The startup of a firm like Apple and the whole personal computer industry in silicon valley in the 70s and 80s is an engaging story.

Should have made for a good movie but apparently the movie (Jobs - 2013) sucks.

Not sure whether it's been mentioned before but one of the funniest books you'll ever read is 'The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared' by Swedish authour Jonas Jonasson.

Amazon.com: The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared: Jonas Jonasson: Books

The title is the story of Alan Karlsson who's had enough of his old people's home and disappears on the eve of his hundredth birthday.
What develops in a hilarious tale with lots of adventures in the present and flashbacks to his colourful and interesting past which sort of is a history lesson in itself.

Witty, quirky and I loughed out loud several times. It's one of those stories you just don't want to end.

    Stephen Hunter's "The Master Sniper"

"It is the spring of 1945, and the Nazis are eliminating all the witnesses to their horrible crimes, including Jews and foreigners remaining in the prison camps."

    Hunter is an excellent author.
