| The Dog | Cambodia appoints Thaksin as adviser Cambodia appoints Thaksin as adviser Cambodia has appointed former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as economic adviser to premier Hun Sen and his administration, a Cambodian government statement said on Wednesday. Cambodia has appointed former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, seen here in 2008, as economic adviser to premier Hun Sen and his administration. The statement, read out on state television, said Thaksin would serve "as personal adviser to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the adviser to the Cambodian government in charge of economy". The appointment, by royal decree, came almost two weeks after Hun Sen riled Thailand by offering safe haven to Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and is living abroad to avoid corruption charges. | Yeah got some life to it this one. It's an AFP story so I copied it from Yahoo and stuck it in General Topics, my first post there in at least a year. Got to be good for a laugh. |

| If he helps the goverment introduce policy to allievate rural poverty and introduce free health care well as crack down on drugs and social disorder he will be as popular in Cambodia as he is in Northern Thailand. Good move by the Cambodians and one in the eye for the Bangkok elite. Last edited by Scottish Gary : 05-11-2009 at 01:12 AM. |

#Also there is a lot of investment in Cambodia from China and Vietnam, some of that on hold due to the economic situation, and Thaksin has the experience and contacts required to facilitate further investment. I wonder if he'll buy Koh Kong now.. lol

| Some, I'm sure - others will have a god laugh at how stupid Hun Sen must be for that move. Wonder how long until Hun Sen regrets that move ;-) Well, good news for Thaksin -- he's got a new pad, and an easy way for his fans to travel to him, easy to reach, right across the border. I wonder when he'll travel there?

| Haha yes good point.. Thaksin gets top job and declares war on Thailand. Every journey starts with a single footstep they say, well let's see how long it takes for him to trip up. |

| Getting Cambodian nationality and a passport is quite easy by all accounts for westerners, so i'm sure it will be no trouble for someone who will invest millions in the country as i'm sure Thaksin will. |

And his social disorder didn't seem to be too effective, as he was removed via a coup. The poor are still poor. The cheap healthcare system was mildly effective, unless you're really sick... | |

| The Dog | Cambodia gives job to Thai ex-PM Cambodia gives job to Thai ex-PM By Guy De Launey BBC News, Phnom Penh ![]() Thailand says it may try to extradite Thaksin ShinawatraFormer Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra has been made an economic adviser to the Cambodian government and Prime Minister Hun Sen. Mr Thaksin has been living in self-imposed exile since last year and faces a prison sentence for corruption if he returns to Thailand. But Cambodia says it will refuse any requests for his extradition. Relations between Cambodia and Thailand have been turbulent in recent months following a border dispute. Mr Thaksin's new role seems unlikely to help the situation. An official statement on Cambodian TV said Mr Thaksin was facing politically motivated charges in Thailand. A government spokesman told the BBC that Cambodia valued Mr Thaksin's leadership qualities and business experience and that he would be an asset to the country. Cambodia has been at loggerheads with the current Thai government over a disputed border near Preah Vihear temple. Opposing troops have exchanged fire several times since the site received World Heritage status last year. Cambodia has declared its frustration over a lack of progress in talks to resolve the issue. Thailand has indicated that it will seek Mr Thaksin's extradition if he visits or takes up residence in Cambodia. Protesters have already made their displeasure known. They demonstrated in front of the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok when the appointment was first proposed at the end of last month. |
