Farang Snacks

I noticed that foodland and lotus carry frozen microwave Thai meals, I can't imagine any normal Thai would buy them, they are about 60baht per meal, ie frozen pad kappow for 60baht or nip down your local Thai restaurant and get a freshly cooked Thai meal for 30baht, are farangs buying them?

Anyway amongst the Thai junk food snacks I noticed some farang ones, last time I ate anything from Alfredo was in America, don't remember if they were in England when I was there, and I was quite impressed, so I bought some of their cheese sticks.

Now this box for the cheese sticks is quite large, contains 10 sticks and a bag of dipping sauce, due to the size of the box I assumed it was 2 or more portions in there.

First you have to defrost them, hmmm, I did wonder how long that would take as waiting an hour before cooking your snack isn't really on, so I opened the packet, imagine buying a portion of french fries from KFC, getting 5 of the fries and cutting them in half, yep thats was about the size of these cheese sticks, obviously they didn't take long to defrost, and here they are in all their glory.

Just deep fry them for 45 seconds and your done, luckily the bread crumbs expand and make them the size of a small skinny little finger, by themselves they were a bit bland, but the dipping sauce is like one you have with a prawn cocktail starter but a bit sweeter, quite nice, think they were 50baht, wouldn't bother buying them again though as they take up too much room in the freezer.

So, your farang snacks recommendations.

No burnt black bits on them, I used my deep fat fryer

although I also yesterday made the mistake of deep fat frying some of those Thai fishfingers in there, they have a bit of garlic in so may taint my frozen french fries a bit

Must confess I buy the odd microwaveable green chicken curry for those lazy days. They don't taste too bad although, as you say, at 60 baht a pop, they're expensive

those cheese things look sickening, why not just buy some proper cheese and some decent bread.

how about a photo of the ingredients label ?

i cant understand why people eat so much of that kind of processed americanized gloop, full of fat, sugar, salt and dubious chemicals and preservatives, yes, they may taste good and they may fill your stomach but from a health point of view they arent so clever.

a plate of chilled som tam with a chunk of french bread with olive oil poured over it makes a decent snack, and for a really filling snack, a couple of kow dtom at, a 4 bite lump of sticky rice with banana inside, wrapped and tied in a banana leaf and slow grilled over charcoal, they sell them on the street everywhere.

7-11 should be grouped with macdonalds, kentucky fried, dunkin donuts etc. and tried for crimes against humanity. they are pandering to our laziness, gluttony and our need for the quick fix for everything and slowly poisoning us while raking in huge profits.

I have to admit I just bought a microwave specifically so that I can eat these meals.

The bottom line is that I do not want to be in Thailand at all and am here only so that partner can pursue career. The agreement was max 2 years, looking increasingly likely I will leave earlier - looking like [as usual] the agreement will not be kept by the Thai side. I have been 6 here of the last 10 years, came back now very reluctantly after a year away and already would already love to leave after a few weeks only.

Since we now have a nice condo with sports and stuff to do in the building which is farang clean, I just need in-home-food to avoid the stink, dirt and all the rest that infests Thai streets. Curious anamoly that rich-luxury condo buildings usually do not have on-site food whereas go downmarket a little and there's bound to be a mama in the building with a wok and kid to deliver to every room.

I much prefer Thai - asian food to anything farang. Eating frozen Thai meals which don't taste bad and cost euro 1.30 from 7-11 is a way out for me. Admittedly I'll probably make more use of the little home cooked bags from the market though. Holding nose and wading through the soi-shit for my supplies a couple of times a week is about do-able. Sticking them in the freezer will probably kill some of the bugs.

So the ready meals have a market with me. And I've seen tired Thais buying them late evening at seeeven too.

I always have a freezer full of S&P foreign food - pastas, anything really, some Jap curries are nice... 60 baht saves me from having to go out or cook. i probably have 1 a week or so... Like today, when the missus is out, I just pop down to the freezer and 4 minutes later have a carbonara 'snack'; it's alright...

My snack food is baguette,brie bacon and an egg.
Cut baguette spread some butter,fry egg and bacon put some slices of brie in baguette.Add fried egg and bacon leave for a few minutes to allow brie to warm and start to ooze,yummy.
Job done.

^Hmmm, seafood in London is generally cod and chips, or if your really after something exotic, fish sticks, formerly known as crab sticks without crab in them, take it your not a catholic so don't eat much seafood

WTF has this to do with the OP? I"m sure there is a "I don't like Thailand " for the whining fvckers, go find it.

If you're in Thailand and don't want to be, you want to minimise contact with Thailand. These ready meals help someone who wants to do that.

I think OP question was who buys these and why. I gave one (of many) answers.
