Breivik pleads not guilty to murder charges
April 16, 2012
Right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges he committed ‘‘acts of terror’’ when he massacred 77 people in twin attacks in Norway last July.
‘‘I acknowledge the acts, but not criminal guilt and I claim self-defence,’’ he told the court on the first day of his 10-week trial.
The judge then entered the plea as ‘‘not guilty.’’
His plea came after prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh spent over an hour reading the charges against him, including ‘‘acts of terror,’’ and listing each of his 77 victims and and how they died.
Breivik, 33, has described his actions as ‘‘cruel but necessary’’ and claims he acted alone and in self-defence against those he considered to be ‘‘state traitors’’ for opening Norway up to multiculturalism and allowing the ‘‘Muslim invasion’’ of Europe.
On July 22, Breivik killed eight people when he set off a bomb in a van parked at the foot of government buildings in Oslo housing the offices of Labour prime minister Jens Stoltenberg, who was not present at the time.
He then travelled to Utoeya island outside Oslo where, dressed as a police officer, he spent more than an hour methodically shooting at hundreds of people attending a Labour Party youth summer camp.
The shooting spree left 69 people dead, most of them teenagers trapped on the small heart-shaped island surrounded by icy waters, and is the deadliest massacre ever committed by a sole gunman.

I expect Ander's defence will be furiously taking notes on this one......gives some credance to Ander's claims....that Europe has been invaded by Muslims; that Labour parties are responsible and therefor need to be killed off in large numbers... Clearly self defence yer honor........
Who were the people in the courtroom who came up to him, offered their hands, then shook his hand?
They appeared to be officials of some sort.
Is this standard operating procedure for a Norway courtroom: to shake hands with a confessed mass murderer?
"Dressed in a dark suit, he smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded courtroom. The 33-year-old then flashed a closed-fist salute, before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials."

Norway Lay Judge Dismissed Over Call to Execute Breivik
OSLO, April 17 (RIA Novosti) – A judge in the trial of confessed Norway mass killer Anders Breivik was on Tuesday dismissed for his online comment that the anti-Muslim extremist who murdered 77 innocent people should face the death penalty.
The trial against Breivik began Monday with two professional judges, as well as three lay judges - local politicians who are appointed for four-year terms and participate on an equal basis in deciding guilt and sentencing. The key issue to be resolved during the trial, expected to last 10 weeks, is Breivik's mental state.
Following the killings last July, lay judge Thomas Indreboe posted "the death penalty is the only just outcome of this case" on a Facebook page. Lawyers on all sides had requested that Indreboe be taken off the trial and he was replaced by back-up lay judge Elisabeth Wisloeff.
The death penalty is not practiced in Norway and most other European countries.
On Tuesday, Breivik addressed the court, reading a manifesto prepared while he was in custody. His testimony is not being broadcast live, but representatives of central world media were present in the courtroom.
In his statement, the terrorist said he acted out of “goodness not evil” to prevent a civil war and “would have done it again.”
"I have carried out the most spectacular and sophisticated attack on Europe since World War II," the BBC quoted as saying the 33-year-old. He admitted carrying out the massacre, but denied criminal responsibility for it. "I cannot plead guilty," he said. "I acted in defense of my culture and of my people and so I ask to be acquitted."
He also said that life in prison or dying for his people would be “the biggest honor” before the judge interrupted his speech.
Many survivors and families of the victims are worried that Breivik may use the trial to promote his extremist ideology. In a statement Breivik published online before the attacks, he wrote that "patriotic resistance fighters" should use trials "as a platform to further our cause."

Nutcase for sure - but he's not a Nazi or Neo Nazi, unless he misunderstands the political spectrum. He's a right-wing extremist which makes him more a fascist like Mussolini, Pinochet, etc.
"Nazi" refered to Germany's National "Socialist" Party - which combined nationalism with socialism. Started out all well and good for Germans - then went off the rails in a big way when nationalism turned to racism (but mostly because of expansionism - let's be honest). Breivik uses racism to further his real stated goal - he's an enemy of socialism.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

The Norwegian convicted of the massacre of 77 people last year has said he is being held in "inhumane" conditions.
Anders Behring Breivik complained in a letter to the prison service that his coffee is served cold, he does not have enough butter for his bread, and he is not allowed moisturiser.
Breivik is serving a minimum 21-year sentence for the bombings and shootings in Oslo and Utoeya island last July.
The Norwegian authorities have not commented on the letter.
However his lawyer has confirmed that the details of the 27-page document leaked to Norway's VG newspaper are authentic.
I highly doubt that there are worse detention facilities in Norway” -Anders Breivik
Breivik is being held in almost complete isolation - 23 hours a day, he says - at Ila prison outside Oslo.
His cell includes three sections, one to sleep, one for study and a third for exercise - each measuring 8 sq m (86 sq ft).
In the letter, he complains that the cell is poorly decorated and has no view.
"I highly doubt that there are worse detention facilities in Norway," he writes.
'Too cold'
Among his other complaints are:
Ila is an all-male institution which "houses some of the country's most dangerous men", its website says.
- the handcuffs he wears when being moved around the prison "are too sharp and "cut in his wrist"
- the cell is too cold, forcing him to wear three layers of clothes
- he has to rush his morning shave and brushing of teeth
- light and television switches are outside the cell, so he has to ask for help to change channel or sleep.
However it differs markedly from other maximum security jails in western Europe.
The staff is a half-and-half mix of men and women and none are armed.
Breivik massacred 77 people, most of them teenagers at a youth camp run by Norway's governing Labour Party.
His 21-year sentence can be indefinitely extended for as long as he is considered a danger to society.
its nothing to write home about here either...In the letter, he complains that the cell is poorly decorated and has no view.
apart from "too cold", it sounds quite a bit familiar, doesnt it?
