And the Word of the Year Is: Apps

The Associated Press reports that linguists have decided on the word of the year for 2010. The American Dialect Society voted the tech slang “app” the 2010 “Word of the Year,” Friday. Wondering what the word was that “app” beat out? It was Cookie Monster’s “nom.”

“Some years there’s a very clear choice,” said Allan Metcalf, the Dialect Society’s executive secretary. While “nom” supporters said that they simply like its cheeriness, it’s a chat, tweet, and text-friendly syllable that means “yummy food.”

“I think this past year there wasn’t anything clearly dominant,” Metcalf said. “But there’s no question ‘app’ is a very powerful word.”

It’s true, the shortened version of the world application has certainly been the country’s preoccupation last year with all the smart phone and computer usage.

“Tweet” and “Google” were last year’s “Word of the Year” and “Word of the Decade,” which proves just how much we all rely on and are consumed by technology.
