Actor, playing masked gunman, shot dead by village guard

How unlucky is this poor sod?

An actor playing a masked gunman in the Philippines has been shot dead after he was mistaken for a real assassin.

Filipino actor Kirk Abella was filming a scene in Cebu for the movie Going Somewhere when village security guard Eddie Cuizon shot and killed him.

The film was being made by British theatre and film director Alan Lyddiard.

Cuizon claims he was woken up by a call from a concerned citizen, saying there was a masked gunman in the area.

Witnesses thought the shot fired was part of the scene, police have said.

As the director shouted "action", actor Kirk Abella began to speed away on a motorcycle with a masked driver and the security guard feared he was going to escape.

He told police he saw two men on a motorcycle and approached them, but they sped away and he stumbled as he tried to stop them, injuring his knee.

Cuizon grabbed Abella by the shirt and shot him.

The 32-year-old actor died in hospital.

Many street killings in the Philippines, including those of political activists and journalists, have been perpetrated by motorcycle-riding gunmen.

Cuizon surrendered to police after he realised what had happened, and is waiting to be charged with homicide and violation of a gun ban.

^There is a lot more to this story. The security guard knew a movie was being made. He was at the site. He then went and borrowed a handgun from a friend, who he still refuses to identify. He went back to the movie site and, when the 'getaway' scene took place, ran up behind the actor, and shot him point blank in the back. Nobody knows why. But there is no question he knew it was a movie, and he acted with premeditation. I don't have a link, so don't bother asking. But, it is all over the evening news here.

I suppose that explains why he's being charged with murder.

There is no known connection between the two men. Maybe the security guard saw it as his chance to break into the movies. Weird, even for here.

Also worth mentioning, village security guards, mall guards, and the like are not allowed to carry firearms. Compound that with the fact that this was during the four-day Halloween period, when there was a nationwide gun ban even for those who were normally allowed to carry weapons. And, the pistol was a homemade one, unlicensed and unregistered.

Sad to learn of an unnecessary death.

    Doesn't make much sense really.
