The pornographic film industry in California is in crisis after an actor was diagnosed with HIV.

Five film companies have suspended production, and others are expected to follow, as medical officials scrambled to track down other actors exposed to the disease.

The identity and gender of the actor involved have not been disclosed.
The infection was discovered by the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation clinic, which carries out compulsory tests of 1,200 actors every month.
Jennifer Miller, an HIV/STD counsellor at the clinic, said: "We are quarantining and testing all exposed partners to the individual who tested positive."
Steven Hirsch, the founder of Vivid Entertainment Group and Wicked Pictures, said his company had halted production immediately.
"Adult entertainment companies act responsibly, and no one wants to see another person test positive if there's anything they can do to stop it," Mr Hirsch said.
Public health officials in Los Angeles have said that actors in the pornographic film industry put themselves at higher risk of sexually-transmitted diseases by not using appropriate contraception.
Several actors contracted HIV in 2004, prompting similar panic in the multi-billion dollar industry.
Darren James, the actor at the centre of the 2004 outbreak, said the industry had not learned lessons from his case. "They went right back to the same habits," he said in an interview on Wednesday.
In the last known case before this week, a woman also tested positive for HIV after making an adult film last year.
State officials in California were already considering strengthening rules requiring condom use in pornographic films produced in the state.
