Lobster fisherman drowns when boat hit by freak wave

A LOBSTER fisherman has drowned off Tasmania's west coast after his boat was hit by a freak wave early today.

Police said the 63-year-old man and a companion had gone to check lobster pots when their boat was hit by the wave near Couta Rocks, south of Arthur River.

"Initial inquiries suggest they have been swamped by a freak wave and both have ended up in the sea," police said.

"One of the men has drowned and the other male was picked up by another vessel in the area some time later and has been taken to the Smithton Hospital, his condition described as stable."

I appreciate your attendance to these forums.

My cousin is a lobster-fisherman on PEI, Canada and, during the time I spent on the island, I heard many a harrowing tale: dories that vanish and 90' steel-hulled draggers ripped in two by the unforgiving sea.

As we all of us know, no one gets out of this world alive. Is life a journey home? Let's hope so.

As to the unfortunate fellow who me met his fate off Tanzania and, indeed, all the others who've ended up down in 'Davy Jones' Locker', may I propose that we offer them our respects instead of pointing-out their judgemental errors?

Thanks for your posts (hope to hear more from you on Laos).

Sorry about the "...me met..." in my little post. I've been known to stutter.
