Mexico - Fifteen shot dead at ranch

Fifteen shot dead at Mexico ranch

Fifteen people have been killed on a remote ranch in northern Mexico, with a prominent union leader among the dead.

The body of Margarito Montes, an organiser of agricultural workers, was among those found riddled with bullet holes in southern Sonora state.

Correspondents say the killings bear the hallmarks of drug gang murders, but the link has not officially been made.

More than 15,000 people have died in drug-related violence since a concerted push against drug gangs began in 2006.

President Felipe Calderon has so far deployed some 45,000 extra security forces in key areas across Mexico in a bid to tackle the cartels.

Correspondents say farmers are often caught up in drug violence, by being paid or coerced to grow marijuana and opium poppies.

I'm from Los Angeles, and Mexico is a 2 hour drive away. Will never go there again. Those who complain about scams and abuse by the police here should see what those bas*ards will do to you.

So true. Some friends of mine thought it would an road-trip adventure to take a bus from the border down to Mexico city a few years ago. At the bus station in Mexico city, they were kidnapped by gunmen who claimed to be Federales and driven to a remote side-street where they were robbed of their belongings and dropped off. On the bright side, some kind Mexican folk helped them get to the US consulate.

I don't know how prevalent this kind of thing is, but it sure scared me off from visiting Mexico.

In 8 years of living here I've only been fined by the police once, and that was for having a noisy straight pipe on my motorcycle - my fault, in other words.

I had a ball of a time when I used to go to Mexico. I was stationed in Belize at the time and every weekend we could go to Cancun or Cozumel cruise boats arriving with rich American women from Miami and Fort Lauderdale no knicker on most of them, just wanting to party and get laid. "Senor Frogs" was one of the best nights out I ever had.
However downtown Cancun could be a very dangerous place and it was never safe to be out alone at night.
If you wanted drugs there was never any problem they could even be brought to your room by room service.
