US Tentatively Approves Flights to Cuba From 10 Cities

The Obama administration tentatively approved Thursday eight airlines to start nonstop flights from the United States to Havana, Cuba, advancing President Barack Obama’s effort to re-engage the communist country.

“Today we take another important step toward delivering on President Obama’s promise to re-engage Cuba,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement posted on the Department of Transportation’s website. The U.S. approved flights to nine other Cuban cities, including Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba, in June.

Having regular air service for the first time in more than 50 years “holds tremendous potential to reunite Cuban American families and foster education and opportunities for American businesses of all sizes,” he said.

Foxx said the decision would not be final until after a 30-day public comment period.

Eight U.S. airlines - Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United - will begin a total of 20 round-trip daily flights to Havana later this year.

The departure cities to Havana include Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Houston; Los Angeles; Newark, New Jersey; New York; and four in Florida, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa. Flights from Chicago, Philadelphia and Minneapolis to Cuban cities other than Havana had already been approved.

Flew over on Korean Air to Seoul from the USA 7 weeks ago and the -777 I was on had the new Panasonic entertainment system. Gone is the box under the seat and the seat pitch is greatly improved as I had 3 inches in front of my knees in economy. Being 6 foot 2, I never had that happen before. A pleasant surprise.

^Great news. Korean Air is my favorite for traveling to America. Chiang Mai-Seoul-Atlanta is the quickest and easiest route for me to visit family. Incheon is comfortable. No Swampy. No Chicago. No LAX.

Flew the 777-300ER Ecomomy Elite from Bangkok to States on July 5, but it was 2-4-2 seating. Very comfortable and nice new video screens. Eva Air is the best for the money, IMO. Surprisingly the flight was not full.

People tend to avoid Asian airlines.

You seem to be ignoring the disaffection of their pilots regarding duty hours, terms and conditions and management incompetency....

Free parking at Suvarnabhumi airport’s Zone C on long holiday

The Suvarnabhumi airport will exempt parking fees for passengers to facilitate their air travels during the coming five day holiday at the weekend.
Airport director Sirote Duangratana said the free parking will be arranged at Zone C parking area where it can accommodate 718 cars.

He said passengers can drive and park their cars from 00.01 am on July 16 until midnight on July 20.

As the airport is expected to be crowded with passengers at the coming long holiday this weekend, the parking areas in front of passenger terminal might not be sufficient, and parking at Zone C might be inconvenient, he said.

This prompted the airport to exempt parking fees at Zone C, he said.

But he said the airport will arrange special shuttle bus service during this period for passengers between Zone C and the passenger terminal.

The shuttle bus will leave every 15 minutes.

The parking points of the shuttle buses will be at the airport’s departure terminal on the fourth floor of Gate 5, and at the arrival terminal on the second floor of Gate 5.

The special shuttle bus service is free of charge.

But he said the airport still have its normal shuttle bus service (Route A) available from the Bus Terminal to Zone C parking area.

The bus will deliver passengers to Gate 3, 8 and 5 and return to Zone C for parking. During rush hour the bus will leave every 7 minutes, while normal hour will leave every 10 minutes.

Pilots at a budget airline involved in a fatal crash earlier this year have said they are over-tired and being asked to work too many hours, according to reports.

A set of leaked safety reports seen by The Guardian show pilots at FlyDubai reporting that their rota often leads them to be fatigued.

In March the airline's flight FZ981 crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, killing all 62 people on board after trying to land in strong winds.

United Arab Emirates-based FlyDubai was set up in 2008 and flies to 85 destinations across the Middle East, eastern Europe, east Africa and south Asia, but not the UK.

In a statement given to The Guardian the airline said its first priority was safety and that it would never ask crews to operate outside legally-permitted hours.

The newspaper said it had seen the air safety reports of 413 FlyDubai flights written in March and April 2016. Pilots describe concerns about fatigue in more than 40.

In one, regarding a flight very soon after the FZ981 crash , a pilot notes that he flew 62 hours over seven days, when the maximum duty limit is 55, upped to 60 in case of unforeseen delays.

"I raise this, mostly for the safety of our crews," the pilot wrote.

"We are often rostered close to the limit anyway, and the crewing department do need to be careful with what they are asking people to do."

One pilot describes some rostering as "illegal" and said the way rotas are organised was leading to a "dangerous situation".

In another, a pilot reports that a senior crew member had to be reprimanded for falling asleep in-flight.

The British Airline Pilots' Association said fatigue was the number one safety concern raised by pilots.

A spokeswoman said: "Reports of fatigue from pilots are on the increase and BALPA is working hard in negotiations with airlines to persuade them to accept those reports as warning signs and reach agreement with us on safe working hours.

"The concerns expressed about FlyDubai should be taken extremely seriously.

"If the company is correct when it says it only rosters within the rules, then it just goes to show that the rules are clearly not good enough - a point BALPA has previously made to UK and international regulators."

FlyDubai told the Guardian its fatigue policy was designed "openly and proactively" to provide a blame-free structure for crew to report when they felt unfit to fly.

A statement said: "FlyDubai rigorously adheres to all regulations set out by the regulator, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and operates to the highest standards.

"As part of our transparent reporting environment we investigate each of these air safety reports (ASRs) to conclusion to understand if they have any operational irregularities and any safety implications."

^ Airline deregulation has gone way too far. There is a real need for governments to set minimums concerning safety, seat size and leg room size, baggage fees, what must be included in advertised fares and (of course) pilot recruitment, training and working rules.

Set the minimums, then let competition start from there. We're getting close to the level at which paid toilets are not a joke any longer, and pilot salaries are so low they only attract those who cannot do anything else.

You're confusing civil aviation rules with airline marketing.

In the Gulf the DGCA-MID runs things and they are notoriously lax.

Hey it's not called the Screamliner for nothing...

Was sat next to this American on the way to LA who lives in Doha looking after Qatar's screamliners.

Needless to say he wasn't very talkative about the plane.

Flew Cathay often before 2000 and started using them again this last 2 years, quality has dropped sharp for Chinese quantity.

Not anymore in my list of favorites... (economy)

Flew business from Vancouver to HK, older plane, expected better...
