Air India Dreamliner engine failure during pre-delivery test
United States America,Business/Economy,Science/Tech, Thu, 02 Aug 2012 IANS
Washington, Aug 2 (IANS) US federal aviation authorities are investigating an engine failure on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane built for Air India during a pre-delivery taxi test in Charleston, South Carolina.
The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday Boeing and General Electric, the engine manufacturer, had notified it Saturday about the mishap. As a result of the failure, the engine reportedly left debris on the active runway at Charleston International Airport and caused a brush fire, NTSB said. There were no passengers aboard the aircraft nor were there any fatalities or injuries.
The NTSB said it had sent an aviation investigator with extensive expertise in aircraft power plants, to the scene on Sunday to gather information to better understand the circumstances of the event.
In the next few days, an NTSB aircraft powerplants expert and a metallurgist from the NTSB Materials Lab will travel to a General Electric facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, to lead and coordinate the disassembly and examination of the engine in question, it said
The Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing and General Electric are parties to the investigation, NTSB said.
Boeing is "unaware of any operational issue that would present concerns about the continued safe operation of in-service 787s powered by GE engines," a statement from the Chicago-based planemaker said.
Boeing's factory in North Charleston, South Carolina, is one of two assembly sites for the twin-engine 787, the world's first jetliner with a fuselage and wings built chiefly from composite materials. The other assembly site is Boeing's wide-body plant in Everett, Washington.

BBC News - Virgin Atlantic to fly between Heathrow and Manchester
Virgin Atlantic to fly between Heathrow and Manchester
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/08/1957.jpg
Virgin Atlantic was founded by Sir Richard Branson, and is 49% owned by Singapore Airlines.
Virgin Atlantic is to begin a short-haul service between London Heathrow and Manchester from next March.
The airline says its first foray into the UK domestic market will provide competition for British Airways.
It will also provide a regional link for passengers using its long-haul services from Heathrow, it says.
Virgin denied the move was a response to Virgin Rail being told it was losing the West Coast Mainline franchise that covers London to Manchester.
The franchise, held by Virgin since 1997, will be taken on by FirstGroup later this year, the government announced last week.
"Flying between Heathrow and Manchester is just the start for Virgin Atlantic's new short-haul operation," said airline chief executive Steve Ridgway.
"We have the means to connect thousands of passengers to our long-haul network as well as to destinations served by other carriers."
The airline says it will operate three daily flights to Manchester using Airbus A319 aircraft from 31 March 2013.
Virgin says that 65% of people who fly from Manchester to London then connect on to another long-haul flight, and they want a share of that market.
Fuel prices Manchester Airports Group said Virgin was already a strong carrier at the airport with long-haul routes to Barbados, Orlando and Las Vegas.
"We aim to support our airlines as they look to grow and we hope the success of Virgin's domestic services will lead to further expansion at Manchester," said Ken O'Toole, chief commercial officer at Manchester Airports Group (MAG).
Virgin Atlantic was founded by Sir Richard Branson, and is 49% owned by Singapore Airlines.
Earlier this month it reported an annual loss because of higher fuel prices.
The carrier made a loss of £80m in the 12 months to the end of February, compared with a profit of £18.5m a year earlier.
BA said in a statement that it was "confident that our excellent customer service and great value fares will continue to set the standard in UK short-haul aviation".

Qantas posts loss, cancels Dreamliner orders to cut costs - Transport - ArabianBusiness.com
"Australia's struggling flagship carrier Qantas Airways cancelled orders for 35 Boeing Dreamliner jets to further cut costs after posting a full-year net loss for the first time in 17 years due to its bleeding international division. Qantas shares jumped to their highest in more than two months as investors welcomed moves by the airline to slash costs following a year troubled by a record fuel bill, rising competition and a labour union that has opposed the carrier's spending cuts.
The airline, which had earlier flagged a net loss, reported a shortfall of AUS$244m (US$254.80m) in the 12 months ended June 30. CEO Alan Joyce declined to give any guidance for earnings in the current year, citing ongoing volatility, but said the airline remained committed to reaching break-even in its international business in financial 2015.
"Given lower growth requirements in this uncertain global context," Qantas is cancelling orders to buy 35 Boeing 787-9s, Joyce said.
The cancellation would result in an unspecified "reduction in our forward capital expenditure commitments," the CEO said, noting that the aircraft are worth a total of S$8.5bn at list prices.......
Qantas has been seeking alliances with other carriers in the region to overcome its disadvantage as a so-called "end-of-line" carrier. Qantas, nicknamed the Flying Kangaroo, has to spend more on fuel than other airlines in Asia to carry passengers on inter-continental routes as its aircraft are based in Australia. But, so far, talks to revive Qantas' ailing international business by floating a new Asian premium airline joint venture have gone nowhere. Qantas ended discussions with Malaysian Airline in March and instead said it would set up a regional low-cost carrier in the increasingly overcrowded low-frills market with China Eastern Airlines.
The carrier said last month that it was in talks with several airlines, including Emirates, on a potential alliance. A tie-up with Emirates would give Qantas access to greater numbers of passengers from Emirates's hub in the Middle East. At the same time, Qantas is facing increasing competition on domestic routes from Virgin Australia, which is benefiting from alliances with Middle East airline Etihad, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Delta . Thursday's earnings are the last to be posted by Qantas in its current form. The airline splits its domestic and international operations into separate reporting units at the start of the 2012/13 financial year."
