The United States military says it has sunk three boats waging an attack on a container ship in the Red Sea as it continues its patrol mission to counter threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels.


Helicopters from two US warships – the USS Eisenhower and USS Gravely – shot at the “Iranian-backed Houthi small boats” in self-defence on Sunday morning while responding to an SOS call from the Singapore-flagged vessel Maersk Hangzhou, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said. The US helicopters sunk three of the boats, killing several of their crew, it said. A fourth boat escaped.

Maersk Hangzhou issued its distress call after it was fired at by the Houthi boats, which came as close as 20 meters and also tried to board it, CENTCOM said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.


As the US helicopters responded, they were also shot at by the Houthi boats, prompting them to return fire, added the CENTCOM statement.

It was the second alleged Houthi attack on the Maersk Hangzhou in less than 24 hours. Late on Saturday night, CENTCOM said it shot down two ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis as it responded to a separate missile strike on Maersk Hangzhou.


In the wake of the attacks, global shipping giant Maersk, which owns the vessel, said it was suspending its operations in the Red Sea for 48 hours, highlighting the continued threat to commercial vessels in the region.

The US should really get the real source of this. Each attack on shipping lines should trigger a counterattack on Iran infrastructure. An attack that really hurts.

WASHINGTON: Twelve nations led by the United States on Wednesday (Jan 3) jointly warned Yemen's Houthi rebels of unspecified consequences unless they halt attacks on Red Sea shipping vessels.

"Let our message now be clear: we call for the immediate end of these illegal attacks and release of unlawfully detained vessels and crews," said the statement released by the White House.

"The Houthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy and free flow of commerce in the region's critical waterways."

The statement comes after several reports that President Joe Biden's administration is considering direct strikes on the rebels if the attacks continue.

Signatories of the statement included Britain, which on Monday issued its own warning to the Houthis of "direct action", as well as Australia, Canada, Germany and Japan.

The only regional country to sign was Bahrain, the tiny Gulf state that has particularly tense relations with Iran, which supports the Houthis.

The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza by targeting ships with links to Israel.

The United States has sent an aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, to the area and earlier announced a coalition of countries to protect movement in the Red Sea, through which 12 per cent of global trade passes.

With this particular missile I'm not sure but they have indeed used patriots for this in the past.

The missile was a scud launched from Yemen into SA, so it never went over the open ocean and a US Naval vessel is not going to launch a missile into SA. It was a Patriot. Norts has been smoking that good stuff again.

Actually I fully support the Houthi in their actions and have great respect for their sheer grit in fighting for their independence from the tyranny of Saudi backed corruptocrats. The Houthis fought in their decade long civil war losing several hundred thousand of their people against the Saudi/US backed regime and won.
Now, backed by Iran, they’re sticking to their principles and are supporting the Palestinians by taking action against the Israelis and their interests.
That the USUK alliance is helping the Israelis in their genocidal war against the original population of Palestine by is a disgrace.

Since 2004, crimes and human rights violations committed by the Houthi militia against civilians have been a daily occurrence in Yemen. Kidnappings, torture of prisoners, bombings of houses and the displacement of thousands of families are only some of the severe war crimes and human rights violations of which the Houthi militia is responsible. The Houthis have planted mines randomly, without differentiating between military or civilian sites. Mine explosions have occurred near homes, schools, mosques, markets, water sources and other places. There have been 580 victims so far, including children and women, and 457 injured.

Crimes committed against women are particularly grave, amounting to murder, maiming, detention, kidnapping and sexual violence. Supervisors in militia prisons repeatedly rape women detainees. Minors have also been victims of crimes. In fact, since 2014, the Houthi in Yemen have forcibly recruited 10 300 children, opening 52 training camps for thousands of adolescents, and have incited violence and promoted the group’s ideology through special lectures to fill students with extremist ideals and involve them in the group’s military actions.

Will the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy establish a new investigative mechanism to document Houthi crimes against women and preserve evidence of these serious human rights violations and war crimes occurring in Yemen?
