Houthis open seized cargo ship to sightseers

More than two months after Yemen’s Houthi rebels captured the Galaxy Leader cargo ship and detained its crew, the Iran-backed rebels have turned the vessel into a domestic “tourist attraction.”

For about US$1 per trip, male-only groups of visitors can board wooden boats five times a week to the hijacked car carrier, which the Houthis hail as a trophy in their fight in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Since shortly after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza broke out on Oct. 7 last year, the Houthis have launched a spate of missile and drone attacks on passing commercial ships which they say are linked to Israel.

A US-led naval coalition has responded by patrolling the Red Sea, and US and British forces have struck military sites of the Houthis, now designated a “global terrorist” group by Washington, to keep open the vital shipping lane.

This has done little to dampen the mood on the sightseeing trips to the seized vessel, which is now decorated with Yemeni and Palestinian flags, and banners displaying anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.

On a recent visit, Zubair al-Haidari, from the capital, Sana’a, said he had traveled for five hours to see the “Israeli ship” anchored off Hodeida on the Red Sea coast.

It is our “pride and honor ... that our armed forces have accomplished this wonderful work in supporting our oppressed brothers in Palestine and in Gaza,” he said.

He was among about 10 visitors taking pictures with their mobile phones as they chewed khat, a plant that generates a mild high and is widely consumed in the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest nation.

On board the ship, some visitors performed a traditional dance featuring the daggers that many Yemenis carry tucked into their belts, accompanied by chants glorifying the Houthis.

On the deck of the Galaxy Leader, none of the visitors interviewed said that they had seen the 25 crew members, who are Bulgarian, Filipino, Ukrainian and Mexican, and whose fate remains unknown.

The Galaxy Leader is owned by a British company, which is in turn owned by an Israeli businessman.

It had been chartered by a Japanese company when it was captured on Nov. 19 last year by the Houthis, who said they were acting in “solidarity” with people in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Israel’s military campaign was sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, which resulted in about 1,140 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures. The militants also seized about 250 hostages.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas and Gaza’s health ministry says the military offensive has killed at least 26,257 people, about 70 percent of them women and children.

Amid the Gaza war, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks against shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, threatening an essential global trade route.

Hizam al-Assad, of the Houthi political bureau, referred to the Galaxy Leader as a “tourist attraction” and said the visitors were “proof that the Yemeni people ... are impatient to meet the enemy and confront him.”

Another visitor, Hamada al-Baydani, said he had traveled 400km from al-Bayda to see the seized ship, which he labeled “a source of pride for Yemenis.”

Several days after detaining the vessel, the Houthis published a video showing a military general welcoming a group they said was the crew, but the militants have not provided any information on their fate since.

After an hour on board under the scorching sun, the visitors made their way back home, chanting: “God is the greatest, death to America, death to Israel.”

Diplomacy underway to allow Houthis a 'climbdown' from attacks: US official

Diplomatic efforts are underway to try to find a "climbdown" for Yemen's Houthis, the special US envoy to Yemen said in a video recording released on Tuesday (Feb 6), in an apparent reference to finding a face-saving solution to ending their attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

US Special Envoy Tim Lenderking recorded his comments on Friday for a think-tank conference before flying to Oman for talks on the crisis that has triggered retaliatory US and British strikes against Houthi weapons sites.

Oman has been a mediator with the Iran-aligned Houthis, who overran the capital Sanaa and Yemen's most populated areas in a civil war that has subsided despite the expiration of a 2022 ceasefire.

The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the militants' leader on Tuesday vowed to escalate the missile and drone attacks unless Israel halts its operations against the enclave's ruling Hamas militant group.

Diplomatic efforts are "being made to try and find a climbdown for the Houthis that would enable (the) situation to improve and to move away from the kinetic aspect" of the Red Sea crisis, Lenderking said.

He cited talks held in Oman last week by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, the Norwegian deputy foreign minister and UN special envoy Hans Grundberg as part of those efforts.

Lenderking accused Iran of aiding Houthi attacks by providing them with weapons, and intelligence and "determining which are the more lucrative targets". Tehran denies backing the strikes.

Lenderking said the longer the Houthi attacks persisted, the higher the danger of renewed fighting in Yemen and disruptions to food and medicine shipments needed in Yemen and Gaza.

The attacks have disrupted maritime trade in one of the world's busiest sea corridors, forcing ships to divert to the Cape of Good Hope, raising insurance rates and driving up shipping costs, he said.

Lenderking said he hopes to hold talks on preserving a roadmap to end the war in Yemen worked out by the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which intervened on behalf of the internationally recognized government in 2015.

While saying there was no basis for the Houthis to link their attacks to the Israel-Hamas conflict, Lenderking said: "We need to see serious de-escalation in Gaza."

It doesn't seem very diplomatic to state publicly that the Houthis are being offered a 'climbdown'. Perhaps that is deliberate so the Houthis reject the idea and the Yanks and Brits can keep firing off more missiles towards Yemen.

^ You're right that the "special envoy" recording comments for a "think tank" needs to be much more prudent with his words and communication. It wasn't the White House or State Department making statements. It's certainly unprofessional and undiplomatic language by that individual, and there should be higher level meetings to manage his "communication efforts".

The goal is for the attacks on world trade, by Iran, via the Houthis, in the Red Sea, to stop. And, this special envoy needs to focus on that rather than comments (for personal pay?) to a "think tank" that can then be made public (thus undermining the diplomatic efforts...) during the negotiation period.

Houthis reportedly sink British ship in Red Sea

The United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Operations Agency (UKMTO) reported Monday that the Houthis sunk a ship traveling in the Red Sea , south of the port city of Mukha in Yemen. It is the the first time since the start of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza that a crew had to abandon their ship because of the Houthis.

Initial reports stated that there were no casualties in the incident, and military officials who were in the area provided the crew with assistance. A report by the Al-Jazeera network, which is based on a source in the field of shipping in Yemen, stated that Ansar Allah forces, or the Houthis in Yemen, attacked a British ship near Bab al-Mandab. The source added that the ship was significantly damaged, which caused it to stop in the water, and that the crew called for help.

After the initial reports, the spokesman of the Houthi army, Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for the incident. According to him, the Houthi forces attacked the British ship Rubymar in the Gulf of Adenwith several missiles. According to him, the ship was badly damaged, its crew got out safely and it is in danger of sinking. Sky News in Arabic reported that the ship had sunk.

Sources gave the Lebanese al-Mayadeen channel, which is affiliated with Hezbollah, more details about the events. According to them, the ship was carrying ammonia and, after it was attacked, attempts were made to save it, but it caught fire and began to sink. The sources said that the ship "was attacked with a precise and new weapon that has not been revealed until now."

The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, have been boasting for many weeks about their ability to attack "Israeli" ships or those that are sailing to Israel, as part of their support for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In every official statement they say that their attacks will continue until "the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip stops, and medicine and food enter the Strip." With the entry of the international coalition to fight against Yemen, the Houthis announced that American and British targets in the Red Sea also were legitimate targets.

    • U.S. and U.K. launch fourth round of airstrikes against Houthis in Yemen

The U.S. and U.K. on Saturday conducted another round of airstrikes against military targets controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, both countries' defense secretaries announced.

Why it matters: This is the fourth round of US-UK strikes against the Houthis amid continuous attacks by the rebel group against commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

    • The U.S. and U.K. had support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and New Zealand, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
    • Austin said the militaries targeted eight locations, including underground weapons storage facilities, missile storage facilities, one-way attack unmanned aerial systems, air defense systems, radars and a helicopter.
    • "These precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities that the Houthis use to threaten global trade, naval vessels, and the lives of innocent mariners in one of the world's most critical waterways," the countries supporting the strikes said in a joint statement.

What they're saying: "The United States will not hesitate to take action, as needed, to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways," Austin said.

    • "We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that they will bear the consequences if they do not stop their illegal attacks, which harm Middle Eastern economies, cause environmental damage, and disrupt the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemen and other countries," Austin continued.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps echoed Austin on the "severe" Houthi attacks against ships in the Red Sea. He said they affected British-owned MV Islander and the MV Rubymar, which led the crew to abandon the ship.

    • "It is our duty to protect lives and sea and preserve freedom of navigation," Shapps said.

The other side: The Houthi rebels said in a statement they will respond to the "American and British escalation" with more attacks against targets in the Red Sea.

    • The Houthis said they attacked a U.S. oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden with precision missiles.

Flashback: The Biden administration earlier this year re-designated the Houthi rebels as a foreign terrorist organization after multiple attacks by the militant group on ships in the Red Sea.

    • The U.S. and U.K. launched the first round of airstrikes in early January.

Between the lines: The escalation in the Red Sea and the growing U.S. military involvement comes amid fears that tensions heightened by the Israel-Hamas war could boil over into a larger regional conflict.

Houthis knock out underwater cables linking Europe to Asia - report

Four underwater communications cables between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti have been struck out of commission in recent months, presumably as a result of attacks by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, according to an exclusive report in the Israeli news site Globes.

The successful targeting of the four cables, which are believed to belong to the AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN systems, marks a serious disruption of communications between Europe and Asia.

Most of the immediate harm will be absorbed by the Gulf states and India, Globes said.

Indian Navy 'swiftly responds' to rescue ship under drone attack in Gulf of Aden, saves 13 Indians

Indian Navy said on Tuesday (Mar 5) that it swiftly responded to a maritime incident in the Gulf of Aden and rescued a ship under drone attack.

The Indian Navy said that it rescued a total of 23 people, out of which 13 were Indians. They were onboard MSC Sky II, a Liberia-flagged container ship which was on its way to Djibouti from Singapore.

"The vessel, with a crew of 23 personnel, including 13 Indians, has been escorted to safe waters," the Navy said.

In a statement, the Navy wrote that the merchant vessel was transiting approximately 90 Nm South East of the Gulf of Aden. It was reported on fire due to a drone or missile attack.

The statement read: "#IndianNavy swiftly responds to a Maritime Incident in #GulfofAden. Liberian-flagged MV #MSCSkyII transiting approximately 90 Nm South East of Aden was reported on fire due to drone/ missile attack PM 04 Mar."

INS Kolkata, a mission deployed in the region for maritime security operations, promptly responded and arrived at the scene of the incident, the Navy said.

The Navy said that a specialised firefighting team of 12 personnel from INS Kolkata embarked on the vessel to assist in firefighting efforts. Specialist EOD Team also embarked on the vessel and provided assistance in residual risk assessment.

Indian Navy said in a statement that relentless efforts by mission-deployed platforms symbolise the Indian Navy's "resolve in ensuring safety and security" of merchant shipping and seafarers plying in the region.

At least two reported killed by Houthi attack on ship in Red Sea

    OF
    Karen Nielsen

At least two sailors are reported killed after an attack on a Greek-owned cargo ship in the Red Sea off the Yemeni port city of Aden.

This is what the British embassy in Yemen writes on the social media X.

"This is the sad but inevitable consequence of the Houthis recklessly firing missiles at international shipping," the statement said.

According to the Reuters news agency, this is the first time that attacks on shipping traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden have claimed human lives.

Earlier it was reported thatat least three were missing and four badly burned after the attack on the Babadans' flagged ship, True Confidence.

Reuters reports that there were 20 crew members and three armed guards on board the ship when it was attacked.

For months, the Houthi movement has been attacking both civilian and military shipping in the waters around Yemen. According to its own statement, the movement is doing so in protest against Israel's attack on Gaza.

Seems that the ship had turned and was headed south, when the missiles hit.

    Not nice, Houthis
