Record-setting U.S. heat dome leaves 141 million under alerts

By the numbers: New temperature and heat index records have been set in multiple cities in the past few days — including in Dallas-Fort Worth, which hit a new all-time high temperature of 106°F as its airport entered a 40th straight day of temperatures above 100°F on Monday.

• The NWS Austin noted Sunday that the Texas city had endured 44 straight days of temperatures above 100°F.
• In Oklahoma, the Miami Mesonet site recorded a new all-time heat index high of 126.19°F on Monday.
• Iowa's Sioux City set a new heat index record on Monday afternoon when it hit 122°F.
• And in Lawrence, Kansas, the heat index hit 134°F degrees after the temperature reached 102°F the dew point 84°F.

Heat records broken across France

Dozens of towns recorded temperatures of over 42C yesterday (August 22), as France’s heatwave entered its peak.

A number of places also saw their record temperature smashed by measurements taken yesterday, including in Puy-Saint-Martin (Drôme), where the mercury hit 43.5C – the hottest temperature recorded across the country.

Heat wave cooks central and eastern US on Labor Day

A wave of extreme heat is blistering throughout the eastern and central parts of the United States on Labor Day.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin have set temperature records over the holiday weekend, with several cities recording temperatures hotter than 100 degrees.

Duluth, Minn., reached a record temperature of 97 degrees Sunday, beating out the previous record by eight degrees and setting a monthly high.

The eastern part of the country also experienced high temperatures, as Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) set temperature records Sunday.

Dulles, which reached 99 degrees Sunday, also tied a monthly record high.

The National Weather Service’s Baltimore-Washington account on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted an advisory that recommended residents who may be vulnerable during the string of high temperatures to take extra precautions.

“If you are spending time outdoors this Labor Day, remember to practice heat safety as the heat index nears/exceeds 100 in some areas this afternoon,” it wrote on X. “Vulnerable populations are recommended to take extra precaution today.”

The wave is expected to spread across from the East Coast to the Southern Plains and the southern region of the country throughout the week.

Cities such as Philadelphia, New York City and Chicago are expected to see temperatures between the lower and high 90s on Tuesday.

About 38 million residents are expected to see temperatures slated either at or higher than 100 degrees throughout the week, the Post reported.

Phoenix Has Set Another Heat Record By Hitting 110 Degrees On 54 Days This Year

How hot is it in Phoenix? In what has been the hottest summer ever measured, the sizzling city in the Sonoran Desert broke yet another record Saturday when temperatures topped 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius).

It was the 54th day this year that the official reading at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport made the mark, eclipsing the previous record of 53 days set in 2020.

Ben Domensino - #Geraldton in WA is having its hottest September day in more than a century of records.

Its running maximum as of midday is 38.0ºC, which EASILY beats its previous September record of 36.1ºC from 2010. Data in Geraldton dates back to 1907.

Several European countries record hottest September temperatures ever

Austria, France, Germany, Poland and Switzerland announced their hottest Septembers on record on Friday, in a year expected to be the warmest in human history as climate change accelerates.

The unseasonably warm weather in Europe came after the EU climate monitor said earlier this month that global temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere summer were the hottest on record.

French weather authority Meteo-France said the September temperature average in the country will be around 21.5 degrees Celsius (70.7 degrees Fahrenheit), between 3.5C and 3.6C above the 1991-2020 reference period.

Average temperatures in France have been exceeding monthly norms consistently for almost two years.

In neighbouring Germany, weather office DWD said this month was the hottest September since national records started, almost 4C higher than the 1961-1990 baseline.

Poland’s weather institute announced September temperatures were 3.6C higher than average and the hottest for the month since records began more than 100 years ago.

National weather bodies in the Alpine nations of Austria and Switzerland also recorded their hottest-ever average September temperatures, a day after a study revealed Swiss glaciers lost 10 percent of their volume in two years amid extreme warming.

The Spanish and Portuguese national weather institutes warned abnormally warm temperatures were going to hit this weekend, with the mercury topping 35C in parts of southern Spain on Friday.

Sydney records hottest ever 1 October

Sydney has sweltered through its hottest start to October on record as fire danger warnings have been issued across the state.

According to data from the Bureau of Meteorology, there are two years tied for the hottest 1 October on record; a temperature reading of 33.1C was recorded at Observatory Hill weather station in both 1961 and 2009.

However, the temperature at the site as of 1.40pm on Sunday was recorded as 34.3C, easily smashing the record.

September 2023 in Japan was exceptionally hot:

With an average temperature of 24.9C and an anomaly of +2.6C vs 91-20, it pulverized by 1.1C September 2012 as the hottest on records.
