Bath bomb: naked man crashes Oban council meeting
A community council meeting on the west coast of Scotland was stopped and police were contacted after a naked man in a bath appeared via videolink.
The interloper made lewd comments to shocked members of Oban community council.
Andrew Vennard, a councillor for Argyll & Bute, was preparing to give an update on the council election when the man, thought to have been in his 30s, suddenly appeared.
The man addressed members of the community council and made bawdy remarks. He could be seen lying naked in a bath full of water. He told Marri Malloy, the chairwoman: “Keep talking dirty to me, I like it.”
George Berry, a member of the community council, asked the man who he was and what position he held. The hacker replied: “69.”
The man then made more rude comments and the decision was taken to close the meeting.
An email was sent to attendees and the meeting was resumed once the virtual intruder had been removed. Duncan Martin, a councillor, said: “He was obviously from somewhere south of the border, going by his accent.”
As the meeting restarted Jessie MacFarlane, a councillor, said: “I was frightened, I went and made sure my doors were all locked.”
The council had decided to use Zoom for the meeting but said it would use another platform in future.
Berry asked: “Are the companies that provide the links to these meetings responsible for security?”
Martin said: “I guess the problem is we wanted to make it easier for the public to join. And we made it easier for the public to join.”
MacFarlane said: “We don’t want that kind of public.”
Berry asked: “Did anyone recognise that guy in his bath?”
Councillor Stewart McIver said: “I don’t think it’s even his own picture. If I looked like that I wouldn’t be publicising it. I would be hiding away.
“He looks like he needed a good plate of mince and tatties.”
The business of the meeting, which included the Oban Harbour revision order and a new roundabout for the outskirts of the town, then continued.
It was not the first time a community meeting in the Highlands had been disrupted in such a fashion. In March last year police were asked to investigate after a naked man gatecrashed an online meeting of Inshes & Milton of Leys community council.
Officers said that the man, who had signed in simply as “Zoom”, could not be identified as he had appeared facing away from his camera. However, the force said a crime had been committed.
Malloy said yesterday: “It was the most eventful meeting we have had. It was the highlight of my year. He was in his 30s with a south-of-the-border accident. After this there will be a big queue to join the council from now on — we’ve been a bit short of numbers recently.”
She added: “I’ve just spoken to the police and reported it. We won’t be using Zoom in future but a different form of online broadcasting with people phoning in to get the password. It will be more secure that way.”
