After Putin's warning, Russian TV lists nuclear targets in U.S.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian state television has listed U.S. military facilities that Moscow would target in the event of a nuclear strike, and said that a hypersonic missile Russia is developing would be able to hit them in less than five minutes.

The targets included the Pentagon and the presidential retreat in Camp David, Maryland.

The report, unusual even by the sometimes bellicose standards of Russian state TV, was broadcast on Sunday evening, days after President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was militarily ready for a “Cuban Missile”-style crisis if the United States wanted one.

With tensions rising over Russian fears that the United States might deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe as a Cold War-era arms-control treaty unravels, Putin has said Russia would be forced to respond by placing hypersonic nuclear missiles on submarines near U.S. waters.

The United States says it has no immediate plans to deploy such missiles in Europe and has dismissed Putin’s warnings as disingenuous propaganda. It does not currently have ground-based intermediate-range nuclear missiles that it could place in Europe.

However, its decision to quit the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty over an alleged Russian violation, something Moscow denies, has freed it to start developing and deploying such missiles.

Putin has said Russia does not want a new arms race, but has also dialled up his military rhetoric.

Some analysts have seen his approach as a tactic to try to re-engage the United States in talks about the strategic balance between the two powers, something Moscow has long pushed for, with mixed results.

In the Sunday evening broadcast, Dmitry Kiselyov, presenter of Russia’s main weekly TV news show ‘Vesti Nedeli’, showed a map of the United States and identified several targets he said Moscow would want to hit in the event of a nuclear war.

The targets, which Kiselyov described as U.S. presidential or military command centers, also included Fort Ritchie, a military training center in Maryland closed in 1998, McClellan, a U.S. Air Force base in California closed in 2001, and Jim Creek, a naval communications base in Washington state.

Kiselyov, who is close to the Kremlin, said the “Tsirkon” (‘Zircon’) hypersonic missile that Russia is developing could hit the targets in less than five minutes if launched from Russian submarines.

Hypersonic flight is generally taken to mean traveling through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound.

“For now, we’re not threatening anyone, but if such a deployment takes place, our response will be instant,” he said.

Kiselyov is one of the main conduits of state television’s strongly anti-American tone, once saying Moscow could turn the United States into radioactive ash.

Asked to comment on Kiselyov’s report, the Kremlin said on Monday it did not interfere in state TV’s editorial policy.

All a bit old fashioned, isn't it.

Create a weapon to wipe everything electronic. Would probably have the population more worried.

Maybe someone should lend Moscow their Google Earth for a few hours.

Poo tin is playing to a domestic audience who love to think that Russia is the big power it once was. It is not and will not be. Russias "glory days" like Britain are behind it and Poo tin knows it. He is happy to push and prod the U.S.A. He sneers at the E.U. who are too busy deciding where to instal transgender toilets and whether they should have a wehrmacht singing Deutchland uber allis, goose stepping around Europe, sorry.... European army.
It plays well at home and adds to his popularity in a country with a slowing economy and a rouble that will soon be cheaper than toilet paper.

Agree. Saber rattling has been going on since sabers were invented in the early Napoleonic period. Nukes and MAD changed the playing field and the emergence of the United States of America as sole global hegemon has served to temper tempers. The stakes are higher and the likelihood of a nuke power doing something inconceivably stupid is near zero.

It's all just bluster. So everyone should have a cool sarsaparilla and relax. Putin's also feeling left out of the Yank-Nork lovefest currently underway in Hanoi.

The article makes it sound like this has come from nowhere ...however:

Donald Trump has confirmed that the US is leaving the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty,

In a written statement, Trump said that the US would be suspending its compliance with the 1987 treaty on Saturday, and would serve formal notice that it would withdraw altogether in six months.

Trump was referring to the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty (INF), which banned ground-launch nuclear missiles with ranges from 500km to 5,500km. Signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, it led to nearly 2,700 short- and medium-range missiles being eliminated, and an end to a dangerous standoff between US Pershing and cruise missiles and Soviet SS-20 missiles in Europe.

Yup, Vlad - just shaken' in me boots be I...

The Navy's ballistic missile submarines, often referred to as "boomers," serve as an undetectable launch platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). They are designed specifically for stealth and the precise delivery of nuclear warheads.

Each of the 14 Ohio-class SSBNs originally carried up to 24 SLBMs with multiple, independently-targeted warheads. However, under provisions of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, each submarine has had four of its missile tubes permanently deactivated and now carry a maximum of 20 missiles. The SSBN's strategic weapon is the Trident II D5 missile, which provides increased range and accuracy over the now out-of-service Trident I C4 missile.

SSBNs are specifically designed for extended deterrent patrols. To decrease the amount of time required for replenishment and maintenance, Ohio-class submarines have three large-diameter logistics hatches that allow sailors to rapidly transfer supply pallets, equipment replacement modules and machinery components, thereby increasing their operational availability.

The Ohio-class design allows the submarines to operate for 15 or more years between major overhauls. On average, the submarines spend 77 days at sea followed by 35 days in-port for maintenance. Each SSBN has two crews, Blue and Gold, which alternate manning the submarines and taking them on patrol. This maximizes the SSBN's strategic availability, reduces the number of submarines required to meet strategic requirements, and allows for proper crew training, readiness and morale.

Anybody with a brain knowing and realizing the current situation of the russo-phobia will hardly say something like this ^ (politely expressed).

And once the country is surrounded more and more by hundreds of military bases of the other unfriendly party spending 10 times more for the weaponry and withdrawing from all reasonable treaties, forcing all their vassals to do the same: Should the "Poo tin" just sit down and wait what will happen?

In December, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited material evidence that Russia has quietly added nuclear-tipped missiles that are currently banned by the treaty to its colossal arsenal. He said Russia has developed "multiple battalions of the SSC-8 missiles," a move that falls outside the arms agreement.

"Its range makes it a direct menace to Europe," he said after a meeting with his NATO counterparts.

Pompeo then offered Russia an ultimatum: Come into compliance of the agreement within 60 days or the United States will exit the weapons pact.

He hasn't been just sitting down has he? South Ossettia, Eastern Ukraine, Crimea. Apparently if it has been filled with Russian migrants it is part of Russia.
Thankyou for the red you dickless trolling twat. When the likes of you poo tin sycophantic toadys disagree with me It tells me I must be on the right track. You say the article already provided the relevant context, but yet you still felt compelled to provide another article with the context
    -----------------------

    Timeline:

1)Trump rejects non proliferation treaty, but Russia is to blame...citing some fake technical infraction.

2)Trump is now free to spunk public money on nuclear weapons contracts for:
Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, GenCorp Aerojet, Huntington Ingalls, Lockheed Martin, Babcock & Wilcox, Bechtel, Honeywell International and URS Corporation, Aecom, Flour, Jacobs Engineering, SAIC, Alliant Techsystems and Rockwell Collins.

3)Russia makes some vague reference to US stupidity.

    4)Russia is Evil.

Don't see this context anywhere in the article, neither does it mention installing a nuke base in Saudi.
