    Knife rampage in Turku, Finland - city on lockdown as several injured

    POLICE have shot a man following an apparent knife attack in Turku, Finland, this afternoon.

    Police have shot a man in Turku, Finland after a stabbing attack
    Witnesses said several people had been stabbed in the town in south-west Finland.

    Reports from the scene say around five people have been hurt.

    The city centre has now been locked down as police tell people to avoid the area.

    Several took to Twitter to describe the scene.

    One said: "A likely terrorist attack just occurred in Turku, Finland. I saw the police shoot a man.

    Another said: "Under lockdown in the center of Turku, several people injured possibly dead. Large police and ambulance presence.

    A third said: "Something violent happening in #turku. Lots of police, ambulances."

    Police said a man has been arrested.

    The police is searching for possible more perpetrators in Turku. People are asked to leave and avoid the center of Turku.

    But now ...

    Police in Finland say an 18-year-old Moroccan man arrested over knife attacks that killed two people in the Finnish city of Turku
    appears to have specifically targeted women, and that the incident is being treated as terrorism-related.
    Key points:
    • Police say attacker appeared to have targeted women
    • Suspect is an 18-year-old Moroccan citizen who arrived in Finland in 2016
    • Of the injured, seven are in intensive care and four have been released from hospital
    The suspect was arrested on Friday after being shot in the leg by police and is currently hospitalised under guard.


    Police said he had arrived in Finland last year, adding they later arrested four other Moroccan men over possible links to him.

    "Due to information received during the night, the Turku stabbings are now being investigated as murders with terrorist intent,"
    Crista Granroth from the National Bureau of Investigation told a news conference on Saturday.

    While the identity of the victims has not been disclosed by authorities, police said the attacker appeared to have targeted women
    during the stabbing spree in downtown Turku, a city of just under 200,000 people in south-west Finland.

    Finnish broadcaster MTV, citing an unnamed source, said the main suspect had been denied asylum in Finland.

    This story is personal to me because I my Finnish gf lived in Turku so, naturally, I've spent some time there.

    With a population of 200,000 it would just be a suburb of Bangkok.
    Mostly a University Town, but the second largest after Helsinki.
