And I bet these people think that they're good secularists, acting without religious motivations of their own.

What a concert, one of the best i've ever seen!

Liam Gallagher making a surprise performance.

    Cold play outstanding.

    Robbie Williams

    Pharrell Williams

Black Eyed Peas, just to name a few were outstanding.

Not forgetting Ariana Grande singing Somewhere over the rainbow at the end.

If you've not seen the live concert that was screened in 50 countries and 5 continents then check it out!!!

Video in link it's 3 and a half hours, but bloody brilliant.

They don't want a murdering piece of filth buried anywhere near his victims. Do you have a problem with that?

I couldn't give a fuck where he ends up. I'm interested, though, in the intense religiosity of people's reactions to these kinds of events, especially when they are from the avowedly non-religious.

No they have not, they've just become even more isolated from their communities.

In a generation or two they will be gone, not dissimilar to the IRA.

You think not wanting the body of a murderer buried near the bodies of his victims is "intensely religious". That makes no sense at all.

If Justin fucking Bieber can appear in the UK without anyone wanting to smack the annoying little fucker in the mouth, then the terrorists have won.

Added: I even saw people calling Piers Morgan a "hero" today.

If that is not enough proof for you I don't know what is.

Yeah, bit of an odd statement from harry considering the IRA have been around for over 100 years, negotiated a truce, and haven't disappeared yet.

No doubt, if my child had been killed, I wouldn't want her killer cozying up to her in a shared grave for all eternity but since I'm a good materialist, that thought makes no sense and beyond just saying 'well, that's how I feel', I can't justify it. This feeling isn't religious in a doctrinal sense but it's religious (not the best word perhaps, but this is Teakdoor so it'll do) in the sense of treating the material world as if special parts of it (in this case a bit of long-dead flesh) had some kind of magical property.

^ I hear (or read) this train of thought often on TD...

This disconnect from any emotion - thinking like a computer devoid of any humanity.

Just bits of flesh, who cares who is buried next to my loved ones, etc...

Not saying you are wrong.. in a sense, you are right and I can see your point... it's just a modern atheist/purely scientific and pragmatic, philosophy, I suppose.

Me, I can't think like that, sometimes I wish I could, but my emotions rule my brain 55

I can't see what all this fuss is about.

Cremate his remains with a packet of bacon and dump the shit in a landfill with the rest of the garbage.

Perhaps there isn't enough of him left.

Maybe they could sprinkle him on a pond.

If you don't think the material body of your child, which you hugged and kissed, nurtured and watch grow. Which called you Mum or Dad, the source of the voice which told you it loved you and the laughter which brightened your days and which is now gone forever is not precious and was not the source and object of some special property, a property which is not non-existent, a property most people call love is nothing more than a piece of flesh to discard than I both pity and despise you.

Well in that case, I'll be sure to leave a teddy for you when you go off to sleep with the angels.

But, actually, you can ease off on your indignation a little. I realise that you live life with your outrage-ometer permanently on the red line and your hair-trigger problem seems to worsening with age but if you look back, you'll see that what I said was not that my child's dead body would not be important but that as a materialist, I can't justify the feelings which I would have. Obviously enough, we all have religious or religious-like feelings and impulses and although we can give, say, an evolutionary account of why we might have these feelings, that's not the same as a justification.

Cyrille's not impressed... dunno.. I'm in even more jovial a mood than normal... counting down the days to move to Japan...

Sorry, that was the best I could muster....
