N Korea missile launch fails, says South Korea

North Korea has attempted to launch a missile on its east coast which is believed to have failed, South Korea's military says.

It comes a day after the state warned the US that it was "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks" amid mounting tension in the region.

On Saturday, a military parade was held in Pyongyang as a show of force.

North Korea has already conducted five nuclear tests and a series of missile launches.

"North Korea attempted to test an unidentified type of missile from [its eastern port of] Sinpo," the ministry said, adding that the suspected launch on Sunday had "failed".

The ministry said that it was investigating for further details.

North Korea marked the 105th anniversary of the birth of its founding president, Kim Il-sung, on Saturday with a huge parade in Pyongyang amid speculation that current leader Kim Jong-un could order a new nuclear test.

That Trump induced pressure on Pyongyang from China seems to be working I see.

    Supposedly NK doesn't trust China.

China has considerable clout over North Korea but not enough to push Pyongyang away from what it considers priorities for national survival, such as nuclear weapons and the uprooting of any chutes of the slightest dissent that might lead to systemic political change. North Korea, meanwhile, is looking to offset not only military threats from the United States but also what it increasingly perceives as economic and ideological threats from China.

If I was Fatboy and if I was convinced Trump will definitely do something aggressive regardless of whether I make tests or not, I would make sure the missile failed to lull him into over-confidence.

It is my guess that Fat Boy had his brother killed to prevent China using him as a replacement for himself.

In this case, Fatboy is the predictable and rational one. Trump is the irrational blowhard.

Not very likely. The nuclear program's sole aim is to deter. Advertising your incompetency is not deterrence, it is encouragement. Also, Trump is the person least in need of lulling into false confidence.

If they declared an end to their nuclear program tomorrow with inspections to verify, then their troubles would be at and end and the regime could potter on in its incompetent fashion in China's shadow without foreign intervention until it comes off the rails due to natural causes at some point in the future.

Ironic that the pursuit of a rogue nuclear capability for 'deterrence' and 'regime survival' is likely to be the decisive factor in the accelerated end of the regime.

There may be some fallout.. but it has to be done sooner or later considering their nuclear aspirations and the sooner the better from a collateral damage minimisation perspective.

I said "If I was convinced that Trump will definitely be aggressive" (In other words that fighting is inevitable). Allowing the enemy to know your capabilities is not always a deterrent. Letting them think you're weak can be a good strategy. I can easily see Trump saying to his Admiral, "Move in closer, they've got nothing".

Nobody seems to care about the other nation's rogue nuclear capabilities.
I would support the US insisting on NK following all Nuclear pacts if and when the US also applies the same standard to Israel.

Not very likely they would shame Kim Il Sung's birthday with a launch failure in strange contrast with their show of force parade in PY. Better to choose a less auspicous day.

Not as a deterrent. Lulling the enemy is only a strategy when you are planning for expected success in an actual ensuing conflagration by emboldening your enemy to make a tactical error with a premature move. There is no possibility of a NK military victory if it goes to war. The best they can do is go out in a flash and a puff of smoke.

The only possible cunning in a fake failure to launch is to maybe encourage the US to simmer down since the technical competence threat appears less advanced than presumed. The fake failure would certainly not be to encourage an Admiral to bust a move as regime survival depends on conflict avoidance.

You make NO SENSE what so ever.
Is that why Fatboy is holding a parade that cost those poor souls billions ?

Now here is something that MAKES SENSE.
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched a ballistic missile Sunday morning from near its submarine base in Sinpo on its east coast, but the launch was the latest in a series of failures just after liftoff, according to American and South Korean military officials.
The timing was a deep embarrassment for the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un, because the missile appeared to have been launched to show off his daring as a fleet of American warships approached his country to deter provocations.

True. My comment was without that consideration.

False. It's a smart tactic in many situations, including when you are the real and self-recognised underdog with little hope. I'd do it if I was in the ring with Lennox Lewis....if I could go down having given him one good punch is better than going down for a duck.

I thought the same thing at first, but then factored into the equation how Fat Boys hates to fail. It is unlikely he wanted a failure now that the world is focused on him.

I would sure liked to have been a fly on the wall of the aircraft carrier right after the launch.
