Dublin boxing weigh-in: Man shot dead, two men injured

A man has been killed in a shooting at a boxing match weigh-in for a WBO title fight in the Republic of Ireland.

Two other men were injured in the incident at Dublin's Regency Hotel at about 14:30 local time on Friday.

It is understood the gunmen were dressed as police officers and armed with AK47 assault rifles.

The event was ahead of Saturday's Clash of the Clans show, featuring a European lightweight bout between Jamie Kavanagh and Antonio Joao Bento.

    Uniform

BBC Radio Foyle's sports reporter Kevin McAnena, who was at the hotel, said he "never felt terror like it" when one of the gunmen pointed a gun at him.
"I heard two loud gunshots from outside coming into the hotel.

Image copyright Marty Curran Image caption Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the shooting at Dublin's Regency Hotel "At which point, two men, who I thought were [police] officers - turns out they were just dressed up in [police] uniform - came in with guns."

He said he saw one of the gunmen shoot a man in the leg about six feet away from him.

He said he believed "the man I saw shot is the man that is now dead".

    Gangland

"That same gunman then looked over at me and pointed the gun at me," he said.

"[Police] have told me since that [the guns] were AK47 rifles.

"It's so surreal, it just happened so quickly, right in front of me.

"A man was shot dead six feet away from me - it's hard to gather your thoughts right now."

    Cancelled

The injured men, in their 20s or 30s, have "possible gunshot wounds", police said, and have been taken to hospitals in Dublin.

Officers investigating the suspected gangland crime have sealed off the hotel for a forensic examination.

The pay-per-view channel Box Nation was due to broadcast the event from Dublin's National Stadium but has said it has now been cancelled.

Gangster killed at Irish boxing weigh in.

Man killed as gunmen dressed as police officers storm Dublin boxing weigh-in and start 'firing AK47s'

A MAN gunned down by AK-47-wielding assassins at a boxing weigh-in has been revealed as one of Dublin's most notorious drug dealers.

David Byrne, 34, was shot dead as horrifying footage showed boxers and fans fleeing for their lives when gunmen dressed as police stormed the Regency Hotel.

Two other people thought to be in their 20s or 30s were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds as Irish police revealed at least four attackers were responsible for the bloody siege.

In the shocking clip, kids can be heard screaming in terror as gunshots ring-out and those inside the room desperately try to escape.

At one point a child is heard shouting: "Daddy help me. Daddy what was that?"

The shooting took place as boxer Jamie Kavanagh was weighing in for his fight with Antonio Joao Bento tomorrow.

Kavanagh is the son of Gerard "Hatchet" Kavanagh - who was lured to his death in Spain last April.

Kavanagh Sr is reported to have been an enforcer for Christy Kinahan - who is suspected of being one of Europe's largest cocaine traffickers.

Several notorious members of the Dublin underworld are understood to have been in attendance at the weigh-in.

Irish police have revealed at least four people were involved in the siege, with two wearing SWAT-style uniforms with metal helmets.

Another is believed to have been dressed as a woman with a grey dress and auburn wig, while a stocky man wearing a beige cap was carrying a handgun.

At least two are reported to have carried Kalashnikovs.

They escaped in a van which was found burned-out shortly after the attack.

Byrne, of Crumlin, was believed to be one of the city's most notorious drug dealers and a member of the Kinahan cartel, the Irish Independent reported.

He is also believed to be the first cousin of Dublin gangster "Fat" Freddie Thompson.

Thompson was previously been informed that his life is in danger, according to MailOnline.

Police said: "We know that there were a considerable number of people present in the Regency Hotel and we are appealing to them to provide any information they may have in relation to the shooting.

"We are also appealing to anyone who was in the area of the Regency Hotel between 2.00 and 2.45 pm, or anyone who was in the Charlemont Estate at that time is asked to contact Ballymun Garda Station."

Box Nation, the television channel scheduled to broadcast the fight, said in a message on Twitter that the show had been cancelled due to the shooting.

It said: "Following today's incident at the Dublin weigh in, tomorrow's show from the National Stadium has been cancelled."

Jamie Kavanagh later tweeted: "Anyone asking I'm OK! Thanks (sic) you for asking. I was lucky today is all I can say."

The bout was being promoted by Frank Warren and MGM Promotions, according to MGM.

Two years ago, former European light-middleweight boxing champion Jamie Moore was shot twice in the legs in Marbella.

Absolutely nothing to do with Knackers, but with very focused organised crime gangs with links to Spain and Netherlands.

THIS is the incredible Sunday World photograph which shows two gunmen, one wearing a dress, fleeing from the Regency Hotel following the most shocking gangland slaying in Irish criminal history.
In a scene straight out of Reservoir Dogs, one starts to remove his blonde wig as he runs for a getaway van which is carrying up to four men disguised as armed police.

The second gunman doesn’t even cover his face as he runs from the hotel, where the body of gangster David Byrne is lying in reception.

"David Byne?" Guess that Talking Heads reunion isn't going to happen then.

Continuity IRA claims responsibility for shooting at Regency Hotel
‘We are not going to stand back and allow drug dealers and criminals to target republicans’

The Continuity IRA has claimed it was responsible for the murder of David Byrne and the wounding of two men at a boxing weigh-in on Friday in Dublin.

While police have said they believe the shooting, in which at least six men were involved, was the result of a drugs feud, the dissident Continuity IRA on Monday said its members carried out the attack.

A spokesman claiming to represent the leadership of the Continuity IRA told the BBC in Belfast that it shot dead Mr Byrne and was planning further attacks on “drug dealers and criminals”.

“A unit of the Continuity IRA was authorised to carry out an operation in Dublin at the weekend, and others throughout Ireland,” he said.

The spokesman claimed Mr Byrne was shot because he had been involved in the murder in Dublin four years ago of dissident republican Alan Ryan.

The latter was a senior member of the Real IRA in the city and was shot dead as a result of a gangland feud in September 2012.
“Although not a member of our organisation, we are not going to stand back and allow drug dealers and criminals to target republicans,” said the Continuity IRA spokesman.

He said there would be more attacks. “The Continuity IRA will carry out further military operations,” he said. “This will not be an isolated incident. Continuity IRA units have been authorised to carry out further operations. More drug dealers and criminals will be targeted.”
The spokesman said the Continuity IRA has been “retraining and re-arming in recent years”.

Gang war erupts as murdered gangster's brother Eddie Hutch is shot dead in revenge for boxing weigh-in murder

ALL OUT gang war has broken out in Dublin after a tit-for-tat underworld murder spree spiralled out of control.

Eddie Hutch Sr was shot nine times as he prepared to leave his home in the north of the Irish capital yesterday evening.

His death was in direct retaliation for the very public slaying of gangster David Byrne on Friday during a boxing weigh-in at the city’s Regency Hotel.

The murder of Hutch, who was in his late 50s, is the third such killing in what is an escalating feud by rival criminal gangs.

The Kinahan crime cartel, which operates out of Spain and is allegedly led by Christy Kinahan, 57, sparked the feud with the killing of Eddie Hutch’s brother Gary last year.

Last Friday’s AK47 slaying of key Kinahan firm associate David Byrne at the Regency Hotel was direct revenge for Gary ‘Hatchet’ Hutch.

Now, with the murder of Eddie Hutch, the Kinahan gang has struck back - despite the heavy police presence on the streets of the Irish capital.

Last night’s murder saw at least four men burst into Hutch’s home in Poplar Row and shoot him nine times in the head.

Although he had been advised to move into a safe house as the feud escalates, Eddie Hutch was not a high-ranking member of the gang and was seen by the Kinahans as a “soft target”.

“They wanted a Hutch scalp and any Hutch would do,” a source told Daily Mail Ireland.

“But Eddie Snr wouldn't have been as concerned for his safety, because he essentially was not involved in this feud and was not involved in criminality.'

The murder came just five days after the slaying of David Byrne,34 - a key Dublin-based member of the Kinahan cartel.

Two Kinahan allies were also shot and seriously injured in the AK47 rampage.

Yesterday the Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for Byrne’s murder and vowed to kill other notorious drug dealers and criminals.

But their claims have been met with scepticism from police familiar with the Dublin criminal underworld.

Byrne’s shooting took place at the Regency Hotel where a weigh-in for a forthcoming boxing match was taking place.

Images from the scene show two men fleeing from the building with guns in their hand just seconds after Byrne was shot dead.

Pictures taken before the attack also show two men disguised as police officers entering the hotel holding AK47s.

Around 300 boxing fans are estimated to have been attending the weigh-in when gunmen opened fire on Friday afternoon.

Horrifying video footage taken inside the room shows people running for their lives as a young boy is heard crying: “Help me Daddy. What's going on?”

The 41-second clip begins with boxer Gary Sweeney, 22, in his underwear and flexing his muscles on stage as he is weighed before his debut bout.

As he leaves the stage to get dressed, the gunfire starts. Sweeney falls over a chair as he joins the rush to flee.

Others throw themselves to the floor or use chairs to shield themselves from a hail of bullets.

Dublin reporters warned lives 'at risk'

A number of Irish journalists have been "formally notified" by police in the Republic of Ireland that their safety is at risk from organised criminals.

It follows two killings in a gangland feud in Dublin in the past week.

In a statement, Independent News and Media (INM), which owns the Irish Independent newspaper, said it was working with police to increase security around its reporters.
Its Editor-in-Chief Stephen Rae said they "would not be deterred".
He added: "This is an outrageous threat to the freedom of the press in Ireland and we are taking the threats with the utmost seriousness.

"Our media group will not be deterred from serving the public interest and highlighting the threat to society at large posed by such criminals."
Group managing editor of the INM, Edward McCann, said the "people in question" had been "formally notified" by Irish police that their safety was at risk from organised criminals.
"As journalists our duty is to report the facts and to expose stuff and sometimes that makes it uncomfortable for criminal elements and in this instance, obviously, there's a risk from organised criminals in relation to reporting of incidents," he said.
