Nigeria 'Placed On Red Alert' Over Ebola Death

Nigeria 'placed on red alert' over Ebola death
    July 26, 2014

Nigeria says it has put all entries into the country on red alert after confirming the death of a Liberian man who was carrying the Ebola virus. The man died after arriving at Lagos airport on Tuesday, in the first Ebola case in Africa's most populous country. Surveillance has been stepped up at all "airports, seaports and land borders", says Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

Since February, more than 660 people have died of Ebola in West Africa - the world's deadliest outbreak to date. It began in southern Guinea and spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The Liberian man collapsed on arrival in Lagos last Sunday. He was taken from the airport to hospital, where he was put in quarantine. Officials have identified the 40-year-old man as an employee of the Liberian government.

Mr Chukwu confirmed that the other passengers on board the flight had been traced and were being monitored. The patient had "avoided contact with the general public" between the airport and the hospital, he said. Health specialists have been deployed at all entry points into the country, he added.

The virus, which kills up to 90% of those infected, spreads through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids. Patients have a better chance of survival if they receive treatment early.

The red alert in Nigeria comes as Sierra Leone launches a hunt for a woman infected with Ebola, who was forcibly removed from hospital by her relatives. The 32-year-old, who is the first registered Ebola case in the capital Freetown, was described by national radio as a "risk to all".

Earlier this week, it was announced that the doctor leading Sierra Leone's fight against Ebola was being treated for the virus.

WHO: West Africa Ebola outbreak figures as of 24 July

    Guinea - 314 deaths, 415 cases
    Liberia - 127 deaths, 224 cases
    Sierra Leone - 219 deaths, 454 cases

This may be the first known case in the current outbreak of the Ebola virus of it spreading through air travel to another country. The disease has now jumped from the west African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to Nigeria.

Have to wonder which one of these minor incidents will blow into a clear and total pandemic - worldwide. With the advent and access of easy travel.

Ebola doesn't really lend itself to generating a pandemic.

    Perhaps....
Yet, we certainly shouldn't discount the nature of things and their ever changing ways.

This would truly apply towards things we don't know much about.
The natural world does not conform to our linear view of things.

That has been the conventional approach. However, IMO this approach has been heavily influenced by political correctness. The usual response for an outbreak of deadly communicable diseases is to quarantine areas. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to apply an effective quarantine without upsetting the sensitivities of people. If it is known that certain African countries are now at high risk of having the infection, consider what would happen if the west attempted to apply an additional visa requirement or banned travel from those regions. There would be claims of prejudice against Africans and the usual groups would be out to protest in the streets of London etc. Remember SARS and the attempt to restrict travel from China and Hong Kong? The Chinese resisted and even covered up the extent of the outbreak to protect their economy. People reacted in primitive fashion treating all Asians as lepers. I remember the news stories of people avoiding Chinese restaurants in Canada and the USA.

In any case, I have a feeling that as the number of infected people grows and a reservoir of the disease establishes itself in humans, the virus will mutate and we will see deadlier forms of ebola.

Spread from Asia to Nigeria via Nigerians visiting Asia to arrange deals.
Lets hope it is uncontrollable in Nigeria.

^ Ebola is too deadly, that's why it never reaches pandemic stage.
By the time you are infectious, you are usually immobile on well on the way to death.
It's also not transferable by aerosol.

For a pandemic, you wan't something with a long incubation, aerosol transmission before symptoms appear and for survivors to continue being infectious for some time.
    Ebola kills too quickly.

Again, Nec, your forgetting that it could mutate into anything for survival - including contradicting your conventional view.

Too clever for us, such strains could develop within a single generation [of the bug] to present itself in variable manners - longer incubation period, allowance to not kill so terribly quick, ability to live longer outside of it's immediate habitat - as in travel easy, etc.

What's scary is we really haven't harnessed any decent toxicology defences as it applies to the millions of viral, bacteria, germs, etc.

And every one of them has the ability [or not] to change it's form to suit the situation for survival.

The news today is rather grim. Rioting and panic in the afflicted regions. Liberia has closed its borders. Will the west start restricting flights from this region? Not PC, and it may cost the world dearly.

Have the local authorities made any simple quarantine procedures?
