It remains important, however, to raise questions about Operation Yewtree and, in particular, the ‘others’ strand of the investigation. To do so is not to suggest that some celebrities and public figures were not guilty of abuse in the past. It is to question the motives for making such a major issue of alleged historical groping and boob-squeezing today. Might it just be that the police and the authorities, having been accused of not taking sexual abuse by the likes of Savile seriously in the past, are now bending the stick the other way to improve their image? It looks like the same sort of PR policing that has seen the police respond to criticisms of their past relations with the press by launching a witch-hunt against tabloid journalists.

The ultimate question is: who benefits from any of this digging up of the past? Apart from the lawyers now pursuing compensation claims against Savile’s estate, the BBC, the NHS and others, it is hard to see what good it will do anybody in the end.

TV weather presenter Fred Talbot has been arrested by police investigating allegations of historical child sex abuse at a Greater Manchester school.

Officers are examining claims of abuse at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in the 1970s and 80s.

Mr Talbot was arrested on suspicion of three counts of indecent assault and four counts of inciting a child to commit acts of gross indecency.

The 63-year-old was a biology teacher at the school at the time.

A police spokesman said: "The offences relate to his time as a teacher at the school between the early 1970s to early 1980s, while the four victims were pupils."

Police raided his home in Bowdon, Trafford, on 11 December. According to his Twitter account he was abroad at the time.

A police spokesman said: "Since allegations were made to police in December we have made good progress with this investigation and with tracing and speaking to former pupils of Altrincham Grammar school.

"However, as part of our ongoing enquiry I am eager to trace anyone who attended the school between the early 1970s and 1980s, who feel they may have information to assist the police investigation."

Mr Talbot, who worked for ITV's Granada Reports programme, is best known for his work on the ITV programme This Morning when it was hosted by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.

He presented his weather reports using a large floating map of the British isles at Liverpool's Albert Dock.

Rolf Harris questioned in Yewtree sex offence probe

Rolf Harris has been questioned by police over historical allegations of sexual offences.

The 83-year-old entertainer and artist was interviewed under caution after attending police premises in south London by appointment in November.

On 28 March, Mr Harris, from Berkshire, was arrested and bailed until May.

He was held as part of the inquiry set up after claims were made against Jimmy Savile although his arrest is unrelated to the former BBC DJ and TV presenter.

Operation Yewtree was set up following the death of Savile in 2011, when hundreds of sex abuse allegations came to light.

The Metropolitan Police did not name Mr Harris after he was first questioned or following his arrest and have still not formally identified him. He is described by them as Yewtree 5.

Although the media was aware of Mr Harris's name in November, they chose only to report that an 82-year-old man had been questioned. His name was first reported by the Sun on its website and later editions of the newspaper on Friday.

His name has not been revealed by the BBC until now for legal reasons, says BBC News home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw.


Twelve arrests

Mr Harris's home in Berkshire was searched in November but he was not at the house at that point.

Scotland Yard said in March: "An 82-year-old man from Berkshire was arrested by officers on Operation Yewtree on suspicion of sexual offences.

"He has been bailed to a date in May pending further inquiries. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'others'."

Harris, one of 12 people arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, has not yet made any public comment.

The police investigation has three strands.

One is looking specifically at the actions of Savile, and the second strand concerns allegations against "Savile and others".

The third strand relates to complaints against other people unconnected to the Savile investigations, made by people who came forward after widespread coverage of the scandal.

Other high-profile names who were questioned in connection with the investigation are PR consultant Max Clifford, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis and comedian Jim Davidson - who all deny any wrongdoing. Gary Glitter, 69, whose real name is Paul Gadd, who was also arrested, has not yet made a statement.

A former driver for the BBC, David Smith, 66, has been charged with past sex offences following his arrest in December.

A former BBC producer, Wilfred De'Ath, arrested last year in Cambridgeshire over an allegation of indecent assault on a girl in the 1960s, has been told he will not face any charges.

Whats interesting about this is the allegations go right back, and the police never made the arrests before, so if the police knew back into the eighties why are the investigating officers at the time not being investigated.

Entertainer Freddie Starr has been rearrested over fresh claims of sexual offences, under the strand of Operation Yewtree unrelated to Jimmy Savile.

Mr Starr, 70, from Warwickshire, was arrested last year on suspicion of sexual offences under the "Savile and others" strand of the operation.

He has previously denied any wrongdoing and has been re-bailed until June.

Operation Yewtree was set up following the revelation of the sexual offences carried out by Jimmy Savile.

The late BBC Radio One DJ and television presenter abused adults and children over more than five decades, according to a Metropolitan Police report.

The NSPCC described him as one of the most prolific sex offenders in its 129-year history.

Operation Yewtree has three strands. One concerns Savile's crimes exclusively, whilst another relates to allegations against Savile and others, and Mr Starr was arrested on 1 November 2012 under this strand.

The third strand, under which Mr Starr was arrested on Wednesday, concentrates on accusations unconnected to the Savile investigations but which emerged as a result of the publicity surrounding Savile.

Mr Starr has previously denied claims that he groped a girl of 14 while in a BBC dressing room with Savile.

Coronation Street actor Bill Roache has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of rape.
Roache, 81, who plays Ken Barlow in the ITV1 soap, was arrested by Lancashire constabulary on Wednesday morning on suspicion of offences involving a 15-year-old girl in 1967.
Detectives searched the actor's house in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and took him to be interviewed at an undisclosed police station in Lancashire.
In a statement, Lancashire constabulary said the offences are alleged to have been committed in Haslingden between April and July 1967 and involved a girl then aged 15.
