'Three dead' in shooting at Jewish school in France

Shooting has broken out at a Jewish school in south-west France, police have said.

8:03AM GMT 19 Mar 2012

At least three people have been killed in the shooting, witnesses have told the AFP news agency.

The French news channel BFM said one adult and two children were among the dead.

A man fled on a motorbike from the scene in Toulouse, where in the same region last week three paratroopers were shot dead by a man on a motorbike.

The three French soldiers were gunned down at an ATM in drive-by shooting in Montauban, 29 miles north of Toulouse.

Last Sunday, a 30-year-old soldier was shot dead - also by a motorcycle-rider - in a residential area of Toulouse.

I'll bet ten to one the killer(s) involved were swarthy skinned, dark haired, fanatically religious male(s) who's native language was not French English, German, Italian or Hebrew.

They were not Xtian, Jewish, Buddhist or Hindu, neither were they pagans, either.

Toulouse shooting: Sarkozy vows to hunt killer as four are gunned down outside Jewish school

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has declared a shooting that left four dead outside a Jewish school to be a "national tragedy" as he vowed to find the killer who perpetrated the massacre that has rocked France.

• Sarkozy: "We should not back down in the face of terror"
• Prosecutor: Gunman "shot at everything"
• Police open anti-terrorism probe into three "similar" incidents
• France boosts security at religious institutions
• Dead include teacher, his two sons, and Israeli citizen
• City "on lockdown" as police hunt killer
• France election campaign effectively suspended

Visiting the scene of the killings in the southern city of Toulouse on Monday, Mr Sarkozy announced a minute of silence in all French schools on Tuesday and said the state would throw its entire weight behind the investigation.

A 30-year-old religious education teacher and his sons aged three and six were mown down as they arrived for class at the Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse on Monday. Another child aged eight to ten years was also killed, and a 17-year-old was seriously injured.

Anti-terrorism investigators have opened a probe into the incident and two separate, previous incidents in the area which saw three French soldiers gunned down by a man on a motorbike.
"We should not back down in the face of terror," Mr Sarkozy said, his voice cracking as he paid tribute to the parents and school authorities. "Barbarism, savagery, hate must not win. The Republic is much stronger than that.
"You cannot murder children like this on the territory of the Republic without being held to account," he said. "Today is a day of national tragedy."
"I want to say to all the leaders of the Jewish community, how close we feel to them. All of France is by their side," he said.
The victims have been named as Rabbi Yonatan Sandler, his two sons Aryeh and Gavriel, and eight-year-old Miriam Monsonego - daughter of the school's headteacher, Yaacov Monsonego.

The French presidential campaign has effectively been suspended with Mr Sarkozy's main rival, socialist Francoise Hollande, also travelling to Toulouse.
Toulose prosecutor Michel Valet described a chilling scene at the school this morning. "He shot at everything he could see, children and adults, and some children were chased into the school," he said.
One parent described the incident as "a vision of horror".
The city is now believed to be on lockdown as police hunt the gunman, who fled on a black scooter.
The government has ordered that security be tightened at Jewish schools and all religious buildings following the attack, which was condemned by Jewish groups and the Israeli foreign ministry.
The shooting comes just days after two other incidents in which soldiers were gunned down by a man on a motorbike in the same region.
Police stated there was a similar calbre of gun was used in all three shootings, AFP reported, while Interior Minister Claude Gueant said on Monday there are "similarities" between the attacks.
Policemen escort young people away from the scene of the shooting outside the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse (AFP/Getty Images)
"We are struck by the similarities between the modus operandi of today's drama and those last week even if we have to wait to have more elements from the police to confirm this hypothesis," Mr Sarkozy said from Toulouse.
He said that one of the soldiers killed in the earlier incidents had been of Caribbean origin and the other two Muslims. Monday's incident appears to have been the first time the attacks took on an anti-Semitic nature.
The shooting occurred as students were arriving for morning classes at the Ozar Hatorah school, which has around 200 pupils. The gunman opened fire at the spot were parents were dropping their children off.
Some two hours after the attack, the children were still in the school, where they stayed until they were escorted out by police.
One officer held a distraught girl, her face in her hands. A mother and son wearing a yarmulke walked away from the site, their faces visibly pained. A video camera was visible at the school's entrance.
Patrick Rouimi, the father of a child at the school, told AFP that a man opened fire on a group of people standing at a spot where children were picked up for the school.
"I saw two people dead in front of the school, an adult and a child ... Inside, it was a vision of horror, the bodies of two small children," a distraught father whose child attends the school told RTL radio.
Flowers are laid at the site of the shooting in Montauban, where three French soldiers were gunned down by a man on a motorbike (AFP/Getty Images)
"I did not find my son, apparently he fled when he saw what happened.
"How can they attack something as sacred as a school, attack children only sixty centimetres tall?"
The shooting occurred at about 8.10am, just ahead of the start of classes in most French schools. The gunman initially used a 9-mm weapon but it jammed, so he switched to a .45-calibre weapon as he went into the Toulouse school, police said.
The shooter, wearing a helmet, fled the scene on a black scooter, witnesses told BFM. A correspondent for the news channel said people in the area were in "immense shock".
Freelance journalist Christopher Bockman told the BBC that Toulouse was in lockdown as police hunted the gunman.
He told France 24: "This is a medieval city with narrow winding roads, where it is easy for a scooter to outrun a police car."
The Israeli Prime Minister has condemned the "despicable murder of Jews" after the attack. A statement from the country's foreign ministry added: "We trust the French authorities to shed full light on this tragedy and bring the perpetrators of these murders to justice."
France's Grand Rabbi Gilles Bernheim has also expressed shock at the attack. "I am horrifed by what happened this morning in Toulouse in front of the Jewish school," he told AFP.
March 15, 2012: Policemen work at the site where three French soldiers were killed in a drive-by shooting near a military base in the southwestern city of Montauban (AFP/Getty Images)
The head of the Jewish students union of France (UEJF), Jonathan Hayoun, said in a statement that "anti-Semitic and racist speech has created a climate of insecurity for Jews in France".
France has Europe's largest Jewish community, estimated at up to 700,000 people.
Police in the area launched a major manhunt last week after the killing of three paratroopers and the wounding of another in two separate, but connected incidents. The perpetrator of both attacks fled on a motorbike.
Witnesses described how the killer had time to turn over one of the wounded men who was trying to crawl away and fire three more shots into him before getting back on his scooter and making his escape.
"One can't fail to notice the similarities between the attacks on our troops in Toulouse and in Montauban and then this horrible attack on children this morning," Mr Gueant said on Monday.
However a police official warned Monday that it was too early to draw solid links between the attacks.
"We're in a heated atmosphere. It's premature for this or that hypothesis to try to establish a direct link," Didier Martinez, regional secretary of the SGP Police union, said on BFM-TV.
French anti-terror police have opened a probe to investigate all three attacks.
Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said there was as yet no evidence to suggest the soldiers had been killed because of their service in Afghanistan.
Between 50 and 60 police officers, including anti-terrorist specialists, have been drafted in to the investigation.
Senior military officials have ordered troops based in the region not to wear their uniforms outside barracks.

Wonder why the need to immediately specify it is a Jewish school. The cry anti-semetic has already gone up, even though nobody has any idea who or why.

Sick to the extreme, shooting kids. Can't really say anything about it, words don't suffice.

Last week three members of a French para trooper unit were shot and killed by a guy on a scooter. They were all North Africans. This leads me to believe we are dealing with possibly a French racist, a Muslim terrorist who saw the three para troopers as traitorous bastards by serving with a military that kills Muslims, or possibly Libyan Intelligence Agentss from the Gaddafi era giving the French their just deserts. Or it could be those Mossad freaks acting like Iranians.... Who knows right now?

Au contraire

The French believe it is an ex para trooper, who happens to be white skinned, tattooed, and follower of that European Christian past time of racism.

French Prosecutor: Killer at Jewish School May be Linked to Neo-Nazi Group

According to a report from France’s Le Point newspaper, the country’s prosecutor believes Monday’s killer may be linked to two other incidents inside France recently, where the only leads police have trace back to former members of a French paratrooper division who were discharged for being closely linked to Neo -Nazis.
In 2008, a fellow member of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regimen reported that 3 members of the regimen “had their picture taken…..behind a swastika flag,” according to Le Point. The 3 men were discharged from the military and according to the Le Point report, their profiles do correspond with the small amount of information available to authorities on Monday’s killer.
“The typical profile of these sinister characters corresponds to the meager reports available to investigators to identify the crazy Toulouse killer, well muscled, tattooed and dressed in black,” the paper reports.
“One thing is certain, the mysterious killers appear to be veterans in the use of weapons,” Le Point writes.
According to AFP, one of the two weapons used in Monday’s attack was the same weapon used in the killing of three French paratroopers last week.

^^ My opinion only, (my post #4 above), I could well be wrong.

The weapons used link this shooting to that of the three soldiers shot last week.
The French prosecutor seems quite certain that the culprits are likely to be the renegade French paras.

From another news source;

Tests reveal same gun was used in recent shootings that killed three French soldiers; all shooting victims were members of minority groups; French police launch manhunt to find suspect.

The fatal shooting at a Jewish school in Toulouse on Monday morning may have been the work of a spree killer who is believed to have murdered seven people in southern France over the last nine days.

French police said forensic evidence revealed the gun used to kill four people --a teacher, his two children and another child-- at the Ozar Hatorah school was the same used to slay three French soldiers on two separate occasions nearby.

The victims in the shootings were all members of minority groups but the exact motivation of the killer is yet unknown.

The first murder linked to the gun took place on March 11. Police found the body of Imad Ibn-Ziaten, a 30-year-old staff sergeant of North African descent, dead behind a school in Toulouse. Investigators suspect the off duty serviceman was lured there by his murderer.

Last Thursday a gunman riding a scooter and wearing a black helmet opened fire on three French soldiers in uniform at a shopping mall in Montauban, a city 50 kilometers north of Toulouse. Abel Chennouf, 24, and Mohamed Legouad, 26, both of North African descent, were killed. Loic Liber, 28, of Afro-Caribbean descent, was left in a coma.

On Monday morning a motorcyclist similar in description to the gunman involved in the second attack drove up to the entrance of Ozar Hatorah in Toulouse and opened fire on a group of parents and children that gathered outside on the start of the school day.

Yonathan Sandler, a 30-year-old teacher from Jerusalem; his two children Aryeh, 6, and Gavriel, 3; and 8-year-old Miriam Monstango, the daughter of the school's principal, died in the attack and several others were wounded.

"We are struck by the between the modus operandi of today's drama and those last week even if we have to wait to have more elements from the police to confirm this hypothesis," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy at a press conference.

Police suspect spree killer... JPost - Jewish World - Jewish News

The probability arises that the work is that of one man, not of three men, as suggested by reading other reports.

On TD no, in the wider community, yes. It leads to racial intolerance and hyperbole, it hinders investigations and hides the true and underlying causes leading to the event.

Shooting at Jewish school - all over the web. Previous, almost certainly related, brutal murder of three French Paras, quite probably by the same gunman, barely a mention. Guess the trigger (no pun intended) words for the news folks are "Jewish", "school" and "kids".

schools and kids seem to always get attention as they are situations that would almost always draw attention and sympathy. when civilians are involved, they usually get pretty much the same attention. it must be that the media just doesn't see the gunning down of 3 Paras as much an attention grabber. however, what I have seen and read, they were classified and described as "FRENCH" Pars as opposed to just Pars. So I don't see where as the descriptor "Jewish" being used as anything other than a descriptor. anything else would be merely speculative.

To a certain extent, that is probably true but it would be unusual news without the jewish factor. 3rd incident involving motorcycle murderer , in the same area , and now with children involved . Bound to attract more press than the first two incidents.

However, the continuing reaction is certainly going into spin mode.

Toulouse shooting: France is on the highest level of security alert

France was on the highest level of security of security alert on Monday night and its presidential campaign on hold after a serial killer coldly shot dead three Jewish children and a teacher in the worst attack on a school the country has known.

The "determined, cold and methodical" masked gunman pulled up on a black motorbike at the gates of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in a suburb of Toulouse, southwestern France, calmly dismounted and killed a 30-year old Rabbi and his two young sons, aged 3 and 6.

After seriously injuring a 17-year old boy, he chased an eight-year old firing a bullet into her head at point-blank range.
The murder weapon was the same as the one used in two other shootings – one last Thursday in which two soldiers died and a third is in a coma, and another four days earlier in which an off-duty soldier was shot dead. Three of the men were of north African descent and one was of West Indian origin.

Breaking News: Police have surrounded a house in a low rent area of Toulouse and made at least one arrest; two police officers suffered minor wounds.

Two French police officers have been injured in a shoot-out during a raid on a house in Toulouse on Wednesday to arrest suspects in the killings of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in south-west France this week, a police source said.
The source said the raid began at 3am local time and was continuing but did not provide further details.
The French news channel BFM TV said the suspects were linked to an Islamist group that it identified as Forsane Alizza but it was not immediately possible to confirm this.

Armed police exchanged shots with the man, who is refusing to surrender, after descending on the house in Toulouse at 3am. His brother was arrested at a separate location.

The 24 year-old told police he was a jihadist for al Qaeda seeking revenge for Palestinian children and French military postings overseas.

Police are concerned that he may have explosives and that he will blow up the building, in the Cote Pavee residential district, if they storm it.

Two police officers were injured as the operation got underway this morning. One was shot in the knee and one in the shoulder.

His mother, who is from Algeria, was brought to the scene but she refused to reason with him, saying she had "little control" over him.

Claude Gueant, the French interior minister, who is at the scene, said: "He claims to be a mujahideen and to belong to al Qaeda.

"He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to take revenge on the French army because of its foreign interventions."

Great work by those involved in pinpointing the murderer so quickly.

May he rot in hell forever.

RIP the victims.
