Historical York

Mrs Ast and I had a day off together today, and seeing as it wasn`t persisting it down, we decided to take a trip to York.

First stop was the Jorvik museum, unfortunately photographs are not allowed, so i`ll have to use stock ones.



Basically you sit in a helta skelta car and get taken on a trip back in time 20ft under York city. You get to see what life was like around 975AD complete with the smells of the time.





I didnt know Dalton was in town.



Once you`ve finished the guided tour, your free to take your time browsing artifacts that were found on the site.



This is some dead fella who was found on the site, having being hacked to pieces. His bones had all kinds of injuries, from bone disease to Axe wounds.

After that we went for a walk around the minster, although it didnt look as good as it should due to renovations taking place. Its still an architectural marvel as far as im concerned. The place never ceases to amaze me.

After that we decided to take a walk down ye olde street known as the Shambles.







By this time I was getting a little thirsty, so it was time for the pub.



Heres one of the many "ginnels" connecting the small streets.



Guess what? We found another pub, which served another pint of refreshing bitter.

After a few swift ones we decided to head for a walk around the city walls. On the way we past a coffee shop that I found rather amusing. Why would anyone want to queue to get in cafe? its not like its the only one in York.



This building kind of reminded me of the ones ive seen in Amsterdam

What do you know, we found another pub. Apparently there is a pub for every day of the year inside the city walls. Sorry about the quality, I think the Theakstons was kicking in.

Where were we? Ah yes, we were heading to the city walls. On the way we passed this old building which had seen better days.



Here we have the Kings arms which floods every time we have a sniff of rain. Thats why it has stone seats and tables inside.



As you can see, we have had a bit of rain recently. The river is still quite high even though weve gone a while without any serious rain.



Here we have the old gatekeepers house (I think)



So we finally made it to the walls.



Imagine looking though here and seeing those marauding barbarians comeing.



Heres another entrance to the city, only it was our exit as it was time to go home. This is one of the few cities that I dont tire of visiting. The only other that springs to mind is Chester.

Bloody hell, how did you manage that? Its not like its a few miles down the road.
Perhaps thats a story for another thread. "I went on the piss in Exeter, and woke in York"

Happened to me one August Bank holiday, went on a crawl in Leeds and ended up in Newquay, must of seemed like a good idea at the time, I came around at Bristol on the M5. I think my friend just want to drive his new car on the long haul (sober of course) fairly good weekend but foking horrible drive back.

York is a beautiful city, and reputed to be the most haunted place in England.

Spent lots of time there as a child.

I must have walked so many times around the wall there must be a groove.
