Don't mention the words bugger & Canal St in the same post or this thread will show up on all sorts of Google searches
Anybody interested in the gay village, give this thread a click
https://teakdoor.com/the-teakdoor-lou...gay-pride.html
Anybody who's not, here's a picture.
Obviously from a time when the canal was used for canal boats & not some sort of al-fresco gay gang-bang zone.
Great thread, SO. Can't green you yet, but I will. Just one question - how much time does it take you to find & compile all this stuff and how much of the text is your own (some is obviously lifted, but a lot sounds like you)?
Amazing. Fantastic effort ;D
Compared to the economically depressed, grey old Thatcherite UK of the 1980's, I have to say cities like Manchester and Birmingham have improved out of sight.
The last time I was in Manchester was 1983. It's certainly changed for the better!
Depends. If I Imageshack the photo's it can take forever, but if I copy & paste them, moments.
Only the music page & a bit of the G-Mex info is lifted.
Without a doubt. You wouldn't recognise it today. I've skimmed through it so I can get to the more exciting gangster stuff. Perhaps I should do some more of the city, instead? I've not even mentioned Castlefield, Deansgate, Piccadily or anything yet.1983. It's certainly changed for the better
I'll see tomorrow. I've only got out of bed to grab a beer & thought I'd have a quick butchers at TD, while I was up. I'm not going on a posting mission now.
excellent thread
shit city
but
excellent thread
i'll send jarvis over for a read
Jarvis will love it.
What about Canal Street?
You are Jarvis aren't you.
Just excellent thread SO. I'm sorry I never visited Manchester now with all the time I spent in England.
It's a bit of a bugger that you haven't mentioned much about Canal St.
I can remember at some point in my distant past being in Manchester on a few odd occasions. Once at a club called Music Box and the others we were in the gay areas at some rather interesting clubs where lots of buggering, rimming, bears, twinks, skinnies, bareback riders were all involved in such things.
I know that we would never see that in Thailand, let alone Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, or Issarn (Issan).
Manchester has one of the best gay communities that I had been to. Lot better than Thailands ( at the time plus in Thailand you get offered lots of boys which wasn't really my thing)/.
Seeing as you're interested, I will comprehensively cover Canal St tomorrow, MrsQ.
That Music Box is still going strong. It's an all-nighter place full of rock chicks nowadays. It may well have been since it was opened, for all I know, as that is all I can remember it as.
^ PsyTrance when I was there. Mates were running the night though, once a month or something like that. Can't remember much about being there. Good club though.
Had a doorman with a spiderweb tattooed over his face. Very welcoming chap.

^ Did they put that sign down so low for CMN's benefit?
This is the 'safe' side of the canal. There is no need for a wall to keep your back against if you are venturing down here.
However, the other side is a different kettle of fish.
^ Homo Central.
It isn't always so busy though.
I enjoy a drink in the village, now & again. Since the smoking ban, those tables make a good place to have a relaxed joint. I don't much about the village, to be frank. If you want some history & all that, I suggest you check it out on Wiki.
Canal Street (Manchester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
All I can do, is show you a few of the pubs I've been to & tell what you may encounter in them.

Excellent SO. Nice ballance of pictures. I went there once on a school trip about fouty years ago. Never made it back.
I know you're trying to write a good thread, but as a city fan I hope you feel disgusted and dirty for writing such pilch.Originally Posted by Silent Orchestra

There's a Thai supermarket down there somewhere, does Thaksin shop there? Have to admit we normally go to the big Chinese supermarket a bit out of town, Wing Sum or something like that.
Anyway, back to the culture...
Some good pics there.
This is the Music Box, that was mentioned earlier.
Now named Jenny's, but still known everywhere as the Music Box. Even their website makes no mention of it.

The site appears down, but I'll leave it up as it might be temporary. Here's the next best thing.
Music Box in Manchester - What's On & Tickets
I don't like it. It is mainly a rock place, but as was mentioned, they have specific nights on there for trance & such, but I've never been to one of those. My eighteen-year-old niece goes there dressed like a vampire for the all-nighters on Friday & Saturday - not my thing at all.
There are a few Thai shops around there. Some big hearted member (again) took the trouble to do a thread on one before.
I'll go & dig it up...

I can't find it. It was a good one, too, featuring scanned pics of soup packets, noodles & such that I bought from the Thai food shop & my attempt at cooking it.
I guess I'll have to do it again. For what it's worth - I did the bird who worked (gone now) in the Thai gift shop on Portland St. Cost me a few quid though. A meal for two in a Thai restaraunt can set you back sixty/seventy quid, easy & she was too happy to spend my money at the casino. She lived with a Thai friend who had married an old man for the meal ticket & said she was saving up to buy a bar in Pattaya (if I hadn't told her I'd been to Patts, she likely wouldn't have mentioned it) which I just knew was bullshit.
We liked to eat at a place called Koh Samui. I won't cut & paste the menu as it's as long as your arm.

We opened our doors to Manchester diners in May 1999 and have served consistently high-quality Thai food ever since. Our menu combines dishes from the central and southern regions, and as you might expect from a restaurant named after one of Thailand's most beautiful islands, we specialize in fish and seafood.
