Quite a detailed post mortem here
Interesting discussion of manoeuvring with azimuth pod propellers and the autopilots system
Not realising for 12 minutes you are on autopilot while unable to control the vessel is a very basic error
The manual emergency procedure even states that the first thing to check is whether you are in auto or manual mode, which was not done
Colossal fuck-up from the captain and pilot crew who seem bizarrely unfamiliar with the system.
Strangely no mention of any ROV although it sounds like a civilian survey crew were on board with the Navy boat crew.
Indeed, whatever the details, it is her professional failure. A navy captain who loses his ship would normally be facing court-martial. My NZ mate reckons that the woke culture is now so pervasive there that no one will challenge her, because that will call into question the whole process that put her in a position of responsibility that was clearly beyond her capabilities.
Agree with both above
My old skipper never made such errors and would have accepted a court martial dishonourable discharge with loss of pension. A ship cannot be run as a democracy everyone's safety and the environment, cargo , other seafarers all depend on competence.
I am not suggesting anyone be executed or keel hauled but no consequences just reinforces the everyone's a winner nonsense, which suitable for special needs kindergarten inclusivity not a professional navy that may be in combat off Taiwan soon.
There is awonderful line from Kenneth More in the classic film Sink the Bismarck
You eithe rhave discipline or you don't
Russia went from being 2nd strongest army in the world to being the 2nd strongest in Ukraine
I follow a youtube channel about boating and a guy had a autopilot installed on his boat. The installer stressed repeated that if hand steering was unresponsive, make fooking sure the autopilot is off and showed him where to look for the indicators (autopilot and on his chart plotter).
I know nothing about driving a boat and I haven't watched the YT videos. Surely the captain or delegate would have to instruct someone to turn the autopilot on? So at least two people must know its status. Did they then go off for afternoon tea and simply forget to mention it?
I am trying to imagine these people in charge of a real warship with advanced munitions.
^ It's bad enough imagining these people in charge of a survey vessel with no munitions... I certainly wouldn't work on it.
I've just never heard of anything like this happening before.
What if another vessel crossed their path?
What if it was a diving vessel with divers in sat?
Whoever was on that bridge should be prosecuted for negligence at the very least.
^ Making them pay for it with their salary and pension would teach them.
^ They lost the first test against England!

Crew on Manawanui during sinking were under-trained, ship not up to task - report | RNZ News
Incompetence, negligence, stupidity...
I don't see how they can put any blame onto the ship, she used to be perfectly good. A ship just does what it's told.Multiple failures of the crew, the ship and the Navy
Bunch of muppets!

And we signed up for a defence deal called AUKUS from the last govt. ( scomo the bullshitter) he fucked over the French to get his greedy paws on that yet we still had to pay the French for a broken contract. Cost the tax payer shiploads. I don't think we shouldn't of paid the French I think scomo fucked Them and the Oz tax payer over. When the media asked macron if he thought Morrison lied
His answer was. I don't Think he lied. I know
Most people are Kunts.dont believe me? Next time you see a group of people. Shout out OI KUNT watch em all turn around.
^ Nelson will be turning in his grave.
If this really does represent the state of woke Western navies then China will be rubbing their grubby hands together with glee.
All of this should be put into private hands if the public sector really is so completely indoctrinated and inept.
Seven months in Isaan is enough for any man so it was relief that I confirmed my first offshore trip of the year. I wasn't going to add to this thread as there's rarely anything new, but on my second nightshift I find myself waiting for data and with nothing to do... so out of boredom...
Anyway, I saw some discussion elsewhere about what there is to do on a 'passport trip' in Bangkok during a Buddha holiday...
Well, it's all about planning! Always book a hotel room with a fridge.
I doubt there's many Isaan lassies who can resist a glass of Ya Dong!
Theoretically.
My major new diet and healthy routine kicked in on the first day of work... so a healthy breakfast it was at Suvarnabhumi.
Fark!
I bought a coffee elsewhere after this and discovered that I could have got five and a half chicken and mushroom puffs for the price of that salad! Like they say, it's more expensive to eat healthy.
I was so shocked by the price that I forgot to keep the receipt, which pissed me off even more.
Anyway, I don't know whether this company are trying to woo me, or whether the flights are so rammed these days that there just weren't any Economy seats left at the last minute, but they had booked me a KLM 'Economy Comfort' seat. And a nice roomy seat it was too!
There were no aisle seats left, so a window it was. So yes, they weren't wooing me... it was all that was left.
I've flown KLM 'Economy Plus' before and it wasn't noticeably any less worse than their standard Economy, but this new 'Economy Comfort' seemed a nice jump up from Economy.
And then the girl distributed a menu... and I dared to hope...
Yes!!!
I care not about the food, but this was the first time I've been served KLM food with metal cutlery in many years.
A new design spoon as well!
I had a security check at Amsterdam coming up so decided against collecting the entire set as I was sure that I'd lose the knife, but two meals and a 'two spoon trip' it was!
After a night of little sleep followed by a 12 hour flight due to the diversion south to avoid Pakistan airspace, I was pretty well fukked on arrival at AMS, and a one hour connection coming off a long haul at this airport just puts you under pressure. Not only are there always huge queues at security but also at immigration to enter Schengen... especially now when queuing up in the 'All Passports' queue behind all the refugees with no paperwork.
Yeah, Brexit... it just keeps on giving.
But anyway, I made it as the gate was closing and onward to Oslo. I was well and truly fukked by the time I arrived at Oslo around 11pm and had to walk to the airport hotel for a brief overnight stop.
Which was OK to be honest and luckily it wasn't raining as I'd forgotten to pack a waterproof coat.
This is what 200 quid gets you for the night at an Oslo airport hotel.
And there's not even a proper telephone.
The room was adequate for five hours though, and I had to leave before the hotel served breakfast.
Now I really was fukked... I never sleep on these short hotel stops despite how knackered I always am, and by midnight my body clock which was on 5am Isaan time started to wake me up anyway.
So... it was back to OSL after a fitful few hours, and my second healthy airport breakfast of the journey.
Which was pretty disgusting to be honest. This was some type of beige-coloured sludge that tasted like flavourless vomit with nuts sprinkled on top. It wasn't cheap either, but at least I remembered to keep the receipt this time.
And so my last flight on to Bergen. SAS have recently left the Star Alliance and joined Skyteam, along with KLM. This is great news for me as these two airlines probably cover three quarters of all my flights, so I can keep my points together in one place.
I was on an SAS Economy Plus ticket, but didn't even bother 'daring to hope'... it's wooden cutlery all the way with these wankers. In Economy, SAS even charge for alcohol on long haul flights these days.
Nothing is ever normal in Scandinavia. Weird phones in the hotel rooms and fancy, over-engineered food packaging is standard. Try drinking this woke-flavoured drink from this bizarre carton without getting juice all down your shirt...
What's wrong with normal orange juice in a normal carton with a straw?
Quite the change from Isaan...
The amount of snow gradually reduced on the approach to Bergen on the milder west coast.
Despite only being stamped into Schengen at Amsterdam a few hours previously the night before, I now had to get stamped out again before going offshore...
Yeah, thanks Brexit.
So on arrival at Bergen I made my way to the airport 'Politi' office to leave Schengen. Here I bumped into an old friend who was also joining the same vessel. It's a small world.
The reverse has to be done at the end of the trip, so another two stamps and another page lost in the passport.
Yeah... thanks...
But finally, around 30 hours after leaving my Bangkok hotel room, I arrived at my new home for the next four weeks.
Home, sweet home!

^ It's the principle.
And besides, I wasn't 'moaning', I was just making an observation that a crappy little salad cost nearly 13 quid.
And it wasn't even wild salmon!
and the oil soup on top of it would have been more kilos than a burger
