I have just discovered that another thing banned by HSE in the Norwegian Sector is six week trips, so I'll only be doing a four week trip this time around, thus reducing my income by a third. I've been caught up in the millennial snowflakes never-ending worry about mental health, despite having done six week trips for the past 30 years. I'll now have to start looking elsewhere for work and am immensely pissed off about it. To my mind it's 'safer' doing two six week trips than three four week trips, as the only time my 'mental health' suffers is at airports and on long haul flights which I loathe, but there you go.

The Northern Lights were spectacular last night, by all accounts. I was busy at the time so missed the show but have borrowed a few photos taken by my colleagues.

One of our surveyors has a brand new, latest fancy Iphone and with the night settings she used, took these...

These pics are pretty cool. I've noticed before that Iphones are the way to go for Northern Lights photos.

I joined the party a bit late but managed just one photo before the show ended. It may not be as dramatic as my colleague's pics but in many ways I think my one is better because I managed to get a couple of platforms in as well.

Yes, four out of five ain't bad.

That story today about Thailand's 'Northern Lights' off Petburi turning out to be squid fishing boats was a bit of a larf.

With all the long flights that's got to piss you of being restricted to a 4 week swing. It happened to me in Australia with the mining/ exploration putting every kunt on 2 weeks on 1 week of then later 5 days on 4 days off. For our mental health. It pissed me of because I was in the habit of doing 3 month swings then fucking of somewhere nice for a month or 2 I was young dumb full of cum and wanted to cash up. Make hay while the sun shines. It was a bit of a conundrum for me because I had gigs with riotinto / hamersley iron robe etc who were good payers but insisted on the short roster. I had to turn em loose and go work for junior company's often with slightly less money but more flexibility.

So was that story about the £5m solid gold toilet nicked from Blemhiem palace.

Apparently it was fully functioning, but there was a 2 minute time limit per customer.

Married to a thai and living in Korat, would trump the mental challenge of staying on a boat for 6 weeks, any day.

Have you asked if they could dispensate for humanitarian reasons ?

There's nothing much of interest going on tonight but we have to go into dry dock on Friday to get a thruster fixed when I hope to get a few pics of the underside of the boat. It'll be a nightmare of safety rules etc etc but where there's a will and all that...

In the meantime a small catch up...

I've fallen on my feet on this job as my immediate boss, the senior geo, was trained up by my good self over 20 years ago. It always pays to be nice to people in this industry as it's such a small world. In gratitude, he plates up every evening meal for me to microwave at 6am, my evening meal time.

Exactly Helge, I spend time on a boat for my mental health. The longer I spend out here, the better I feel!

The HSE people just don't get it.

Still getting the laundry done by the Filipino girls on board? The poor things, HSE will likely be looking into whether they are traumatised by this? And will probably fuck up there rosters to? Or will.norgies replace them?

To say OhOh from asking, does the 4 week rule also include all Filipino comfort staff, or only the hard working geos etc?

Would imagine they'd be pretty fissed at losing earning opportunity/needing to fly back to the Fils an extra few times a year.

I never stayed on a rig long enough, helicoptered out in the morning and back in the afternoon. One in the southern north sea was unmanned. I did get a little worried if the helicopter would pick me up in the afternoon.

It was only when I visited clients in Asia and utilised Bangkok as a transit stop, was I introduced to female "comfort staff".

As my role was to confirm the rigs had their safety equipments correctly positioned, available and to confirm all procedures were being followed correctly.

One may presume they were comforted that they had the necessary equipment available, safety system procedures engaged allowing them to perform their required duties.

Piper Alpha: 34 years ago the oil platform in the North Sea exploded

    Same shit, different ship-piper-alpha-jpg

    World

    July 6, 2022

    Snippet:

    06.07.2022, 06:44

34 years ago today, several explosions on the “Piper Alpha” oil platform caused its sinking. 167 men died in the terrible accident on the North Sea.

"At 9.45 p.m. an alarm went off. A condensate pump had switched off. Condensate is the term for liquefied petroleum gas, LPG for short.

The pump compresses the volatile and highly flammable liquid to 78 atmospheres, which is 25 times the pressure in a car tire. Nothing unusual. But she can’t be hired again.

As all the power supply of the offshore construction works depends on this pump, there is only a few minutes to get the pump running again, otherwise the power supply would be completely lost. A backup pump is off for maintenance. However, since these have not yet started, the head production worker authorizes the use of this pump. A serious mistake, as will be shown later."

^ I think that everyone remembers where they were when the Piper Alpha tragedy happened.

I was driving down through France enroute to Andorra to do a geological field mapping project as part of my geology degree. I still remember watching the news in a little French cafe for some reason, even though it was a few years before I started working offshore.

The lessons learnt over Piper Alpha still feature in safety briefings today.

Thanks Topper, although I can't really take credit. I don't think that my photo really did the occasion justice.

There's no Filipinas onboard any more, just Filipino boys. There's been a complete change out in Filipino catering/cleaning staff since my last trip on the boat... maybe the shipping company have changes agents? Only a couple of Filipino ABs are familiar.

One of the new stewards had the pleasure of dealing with my laundry bag last week that included my undergarments worn during a couple of long haul flights, but he seems OK.

No way will Norwegians replace the Filipino catering and cleaning staff... they are just too expensive. It's been many years since we had Norwegian stewardesses on these boats.

I've since discovered that the four week rule is due to the Norwegian union and only applies to the Norwegian Sector, but it still completely fukks me up. I don't like unions and have never been a member of one and it really pisses me off that these rules extend to self employed workers just because the Nogs demand such cushy work conditions. They probably have the best working conditions and pay anywhere in the world offshore and they still constantly complain and demand more. No Norwegian will work longer than two weeks offshore and yet they want to stop others from doing so. Pisses me off.

I have no idea whether these rules extend to Filipinos but I very much doubt it.
