Chanthaburi - Thai Tims and Reamonn Gormley

Thai Tims honour Reamonn Gormley by naming school hall for murdered teen
    1 Feb 2013 00:01

THE children, who Reamonn taught English with Celtic songs while volunteering, are erecting a green and white memorial to the tragic teen.

A GROUP of kids known as the Thai Tims have honoured a tragic young man who taught them by naming a new school pavilion in his honour.

Volunteer Reamonn Gormley helped the youngsters learn English with the help of Celtic football songs.

Now, the hall named after Hoops fan Reamonn – who was murdered in his home town of Blantyre in February 2011, aged just 19 – is taking shape.

And the theme is clear – the walls are painted green and white and a large Celtic crest will take pride of place in the block in Chanthaburi Province. The hall was the idea of expat Paul Lennon, who once spoke with pal Reamonn about a Celtic-themed hall.

He said: “After Reamonn’s murder, the Celtic family donated funds for us to build the Reamonn Gormley Hall.”

    and one from last year

old news . . . also gives outcome of trial for his murder.

    26 April 2012

THAI children taught by a Celtic fan who was stabbed to death in a robbery are staying at Parkhead during a visit to Scotland.

And teenage student Reamonn Gormley’s former pupils, known as the “Thai Tims”, will sing in Celtic Park at the home game against St Johnstone next Thursday.

The kids and their teachers have been put up in the stadium’s hospitality area.

Reamonn, 19, of Blantyre, Lanarkshire, had gone to Thailand during a gap year from university.

He worked for the Good Child Foundation, teaching the kids English by singing Celtic songs to them.

He was killed in his home town in February last year. Daryn Maxwell, 23, was jailed for life for his murder and Barry Smith, 19, for eight years and three months for culpable homicide.

Reamonn’s friends led a 2000-strong parade through Blantyre in his honour. It ended with everyone singing You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Reamonn Gormley's family visit Thailand to see memorial hall opened in murdered teenager's honour
    15 Nov 2013 07:51
JAMES and Ann Gormley were guests of honour at the unveiling of the Reamonn Gormley Memorial Hall in Chanthaburi Province.

THE parents of murdered teen Reamonn Gormley have visited Thailand to see a memorial hall opened in his honour.

James and Ann Gormley met a group of children dubbed the Thai Tims by football fans for the emotional event.

Reamonn had taught the youngsters to speak English by using Celtic football songs.

Big-hearted sports science student Reamonn also worked with Down’s syndrome kids and raised funds for charity before his life was tragically cut short, aged 19.

He was murdered on his way home from watching a Celtic game on TV in his home town of Blantyre, Lanarkshire, in February 2011.

After Reamonn’s death, the Thai Tims decided to name a school pavilion after him.

James and Ann were guests of honour at the unveiling of the Reamonn Gormley Memorial Hall in Chanthaburi Province.

The hall was the idea of expat Paul Lennon, who had talked with pal Reamonn about a Celtic-themed hall.

It was built using cash donated by fans after Reamonn’s death, as well as proceeds from the Thai Tims’ version of I Just Can’t Get Enough, which was released on iTunes in 2011.

Thugs Daryn Maxwell, 25, and Barry Smith, 21, were handed life sentences after being found guilty of attacking Reamonn during a bungled robbery.

Blantyre Soccer Academy raise money for Thai school in memory of Reamonn Gormley
    Nov 23, 2014

The Good Child Foundation are building a school in the Chanthaburi province of Thailand.

Fundraising efforts in memory of slain Blantyre teenager Reamonn Gormley have been praised in the Scottish Parliament.

Blantyre Soccer Academy have held three annual football festivals at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground and the event this summer attracted over 1500 kids. The money raised from the event is helping to build an extension to a school in Thailand.

Reamonn, who was killed during an attempted robbery in his home town in February 2011, spent a gap year helping the Good Child Foundation.

Now Blantyre MSP James Kelly has congratulated the town’s soccer academy on the work they do in a Scottish Parliament motion.

He said: “Blantyre Soccer Academy are making a real, positive difference in communities but I did not anticipate they would be helping build schools in South-East Asia as well as well football teams in South Lanarkshire.

“The death of Reamonn Gormley was a senseless tragedy which shocked people in Blantyre and across Scotland.

“He was clearly a special young man and his legacy sees thousands of children active in Scotland and schools being built in Thailand. That is something his family can be immensely proud of.”

This summer’s Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival is helping the school in Chanthaburi province build a new art class.

Jimmy Whelan of Blantyre Soccer Academy said: “Everyone at the academy feels totally humbled and proud that this art room shall be called The Blantyre Soccer Academy Art Room, with our crest proudly displayed on the wall.

“Blantyre Soccer Academy’s involvement with the foundation came after the tragic death of Reamonn Gormley in 2011. We decided the community should give something back to the charity which was so close to Reamonn’s heart.

“We are now planning our fourth year of this event, which will see over 2000 children and young adults taking part.”

6 weeks ago, but good to see the continued support for this Chanthaburi school

Thai kids' charity nets £5000 from Blantyre Soccer Academy
    3 September 2019
The football outfit handed over £5000 from their annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival and Sportsman’s Dinner.

Blantyre Soccer Academy have once again made their annual donation to Celtic-mad pupils at the Thai-based Good Child Foundation. The football outfit handed over £5000 from their annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival and Sportsman’s Dinner, held in May and June.

Based in the Chanthaburi province of Thailand, the school is for children with Down’s syndrome.

They formed a partnership with the soccer academy following the tragic passing of Blantyre teenager Reamonn in 2011. During a gap year from university in 2010, Celtic-mad Reamonn had gone to volunteer with the foundation – whose pupils now devoutly follow Celtic and are affectionately known as the Thai Tims – and won the hearts of everyone there through his work and dedication.

Paul Lennon, who set up the Good Child Foundation with his wife Pun, said: “We have received a wonderful donation of £5000 from funds raised by the Blantyre Soccer Academy’s annual Reamonn Gormley football tournament. Many thanks to everyone who took part.

    ...

A former pupil of John Ogilvie High, Reamonn Gormley was just 19-years-old when he was stabbed to death in an attempted street robbery while walking home from the Parkville Hotel, on February 1, 2011.

    Good Child Foundation school, Chanthaburi

Blantyre Soccer Academy boost for Thai Tims
A new outdoor coverway was created thanks for funds raised from Blantyre Soccer Academy

    25 November 2019

Work is now complete on a new outdoor coverway at a Thai-based school for children with Down’s syndrome, thanks to ongoing support from Blantyre Soccer Academy.

The Good Child Foundation school, based in the Chanthaburi province of Thailand, formed a partnership with the soccer academy following the tragic murder of Blantyre teenager Reamonn Gormley in 2011.

During a gap year from university in 2010, Celtic-mad Reamonn (pictured right) had gone to volunteer with the foundation – whose pupils now also follow Celtic and are affectionately known as the Thai Tims – and won the hearts of everyone there through his work and dedication.

Every year the football academy donates thousands of pounds to the foundation, raised during their annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival and Sportsman’s Dinner, held every May and June.

Previous years have seen the foundation build a purpose-built Blantyre Soccer Academy art room in memory of Reamonn, new computers and software for their IT suite, a spectators’ stand that lets the children watch sports in comfort, as well as money to send the children on a three-day trip-of-a-lifetime to a theme park in Thailand, along with help in various other educational projects.
