Just like this MCFC deserted
Just like this MCFC deserted
on a far smaller, local scale
this hotel was never completed - pic shows maybe a quarter of the whole building, a few hundred m off Sukhumvit Rd/Highway 3 heading south from Chanthaburi and just outside the entrance to Namtok Phlio National Park.
Slowly being overcome by nature.
It looks spooky already. Do you know why it was never completed?
We asked the men on the gate - the answer was 'money' as in 'no money' but they didn't know any more, or how long since it was abandoned.
At a wild guess looking at the place maybe 10yrs? Despite the good location on #3 on the way to/from Trat & Koh Chang, entry to National park (Chanthaburi - Namtok Phlio National Park) etc it looks huge and hard to see how it was ever going to succeed.
21km from home will ask around. i lke to know these things!
Thanks, genghis. You sound like me, I have to know the whole story.
Hi Bogan. I lived very close to that big bastard for over 8 years and have had many a conversation about it with Thai and farang alike. I have only ever seen it from the outside and a glance of the inside ground level from the entrance on Chaeroen Krung road. Thanks for the link, was most interesting. They seem to give parts of the building a lick of paint every few years. It always amazes me that no one has bought and finished it, and now that I have had a glimpse inside it amazes me even more. I would love to know more about the structural, financial and legal aspects of the site.Originally Posted by Bogon

On outskirts of Chanthaburi city, apparently abandoned 1997
One of the UK Photography magazines did a great spread about a year ago inside abandoned Bangkok buildings.
Some cool shots.
Does anyone know the story of the two towers that are on the banks of the Bang Pakong River very close to the Bang Na Trat highway as you cross from Samut Prakarn into Chonburi.
There are two pristine tower blocks that have clearly never been occupied, you can see straight through the glass doored living rooms. There is also a housing complex around the base of the 2 towers that looks equally as deserted though it's hard to see from the level I see it (these Ferraris are too low to the ground for a walled highway).
Bokor Hill Station (in Khmer កស្ថានីយភ្នំបូកគោ Kosthany Phnom Bokor) is an abandoned French town in Preah Monivong National Park. Construction started in 1921 on Dâmrei Mountains, about 20 km as the crow flies (42 km by the road) West from the town of Kampot, southern Cambodia.
The town was built as a resort by the colonial French settlers to offer an escape from the heat, humidity and general insalubrity of Phnom Penh[1]. Nine hundred lives were lost in nine months during the construction of the resort in this remote mountain location.[2]
The centrepiece of the resort was the grand Bokor Palace Hotel & Casino, complemented by shops, a post office, a church and the Royal Apartments. It is also an important cultural site, showing how the colonial settlers spent their free time.
Bokor Hill was abandoned first by the French in late 1940s, during the First Indochina War, because of local insurrections guided by the Khmer Issarak, and then for good in 1972, as Khmer Rouge took over the area. During the Vietnamese invasion in 1979, Khmer Rouge entrenched themselves and held on tightly for months. In earlier 1990s Bokor Hill was still one of the last strongholds of Khmer Rouge.
more pics
This blog from March 2011 suggests the buildings are to be demolished to be replaced by a casino.
^^Passed by there by many times driving and always thought the same.
That's really interesting because I didn't get to see the hill or building when I was in Kampot, we were told the hill had been bought and the road was closed. Some trail bikers passing through told us it was a magnificent view, they had been there before but they could not get access to it. It's the best view for miles, but like a lot of the hillside areas near the coast, they've been bought up and are sitting idle waiting for the tourist economy to revive.
Well thanks for posting the pics anyway, and I've bookmarked the blog, very interesting.
There's a hotel on a hill over the coast at Sihanoukville, The Independance Hotel, dating back to the 1920's I think, that was derelict and has been renovated.
I went up to see it and had a walk in the gardens and down on the beach, I had a very uneasy feeling, it just didn't feel comfortable and it was virtually deserted. I was told later on a couple of occassions when talking about it in the bars that it had been the Khmer Rouge interogation centre for the region and a lot of people were killed. There was a lot of superstition and obvious bad feeling about the place with the locals.
I wonder if the high end tourists that get bussed straight in there would be so willing to stay if they knew it's grissly past, apparently it really was a slaughterhouse, the rooms were used for torture and the pool and beach for executions. One foreign guy showed me some pictures of it when it was derelict, it just looked bombed out. It's not so easy to find history of it on the web beyond the glossy hotel sites.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

This is a very interesting thread and I did a search for buildings in the UK.
I found a fantastic site with high quality photos, there are just so many of them I should just post the link. As you scroll down the set of pictures be sure to go to the link at the bottom as it takes you further into the building. There's also a good write up of each site, a lot of them are asylums dating from the 19th century that were in use up until the 1990's when care in the community became the norm.
Anyway a great resource.. Abandoned Britain - Photographing Ruins click on 'photographic projects' or at the bottom of the page there is a link to another project of his of abandoned industrial buildings.
And did those feet in ancient times.................

Thank you, English Noodles.
That was the one!
I never at any point noticed references to the actual name of this place in the credits, I just vividly recall the look of this spooky building.
