Barnsley Central and the devotion of voters

Have the citizens of Barnsley just voted themselves the most devoted electorate in the UK?

Last night the citizens of Barnsley Central voted overwhelmingly to establish Dan Jarvis as their new MP. Mr Jarvis is a former member of HM Army (Major) and has served in Afghanistan in the parachute regiment before resigning his post and applying for the Labour candidacy of Barnsley despite having been born in Nottingham and currently residing in Hampshire as a single father. He is the first candidate to win a seat in Barnsley, not to have been born in Yorkshire, and having no connection with the mining industry, since 1938. Indeed, only one other Barnsley Central MP has ever been born outside Barnsley (Sidney Scofield) and he was from Pontefract, a mere 15 miles away. Really, quite astonishing.

Mr Jarvis, replaced Mr Eric IIlsley, the disgraced Labour MP who has recently been found guilty of expenses fraud and is currently serving 12 months in HMP.

It mattered not that the then Labour PM, Tony Blair, invaded a country in the Middle east (Iraq) 8 years ago and also sent British troops into an Afghanistan wilderness to exterminate an invisible enemy.

It mattered not that the next labour party PM, Gordon Brown, some would say the most obnoxious minister ever to hold the post of PM, together with his friends in the monetary world bankrupted the country to the tune of a few trillion pounds, the likes of which have never been seen and will, quite possibly take decades of working mens hard earned cash to rectify.

Now, one might think that Mr Jarvis was really up against it. A disgraced labour MP from Barnsley Central who had recently resigned having been caught stealing from the electorate, the country in upheaval due to labour's gay abandonment with taxpayers cash in the treasury. Continuing problems in the middle east involving the deaths of British troops.

However, the people of Barnsley Central were having none of it! Mr Jarvis (who?, some Barnsley people might ask) won a crushing victory.

Not surprisingly Barnsley Central has been a labour stronghold since 1938. Now, that's devotion

Just goes to show yet again how dumb Northerners are and their mentality of 'my parents voted Labour all their lives so i will'. The powers that be really need to think about taking voting rights away from Northerners.

We got ourselves a shiny new Con MP this time. Barnsley is Barnsley BB. You could put a donkey with a red rosette up for election, and they`d vote for it. Great people in Barnsley, and a great night out, but, thick as fok when it comes to politics.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong

lot of them thick as pigs
the way they see it it Labour looks after them ,
labour party spent a huge amount on the area , funding non jobs etc -the voters cannot see the money was spent and not invested -to keep them dependent.
labour also made lots of these jobs hard to remove - hence why they are not being cut now

labour continued to allow 2..5 million + people to claim incapacity benefit -in exchange for thier votes -lots of these claiments in Barnsley

the chart in the OP has no name for the BNP candidate a woman i think - they have just repeated the name of the guy above -no doubt some liberal journalist who did it on purpose

The next Labour MP for Barnsley Central? The Rt. Honourable Blibby Blobby.

A sure fire winner with his command of the language of Yorkshire and perhaps someone that the people of Barnsley can easily relate to

Not so dumb it would seem..... they surely didn`t believe the bullshit of Nick Clegg & Co as many others did. Hey he can`t even sell his house just up the road in Sheffield....you know the one which he got £84,000 in expenses from the taxpayers to repair it.

I`ll also bet that students from all over the UK will not be so dumb when it comes to voting for the lying liberals.

Well done the folks of Barnsley...not to be walked over by the present coalition...and fancy UKIP beating the Tories...you have to laugh.

Mr Lick you got to remember the uk does not work like Thailand. With a few exceptions people vote for the party and not the candidate. I honestly doubt that many in the uk know the name of the candidate they are voting for until they enter the voting booth, this allows the party whips to maintain a level of party discipline that thai parties can only dream of, given that should a MP loose his party membership, he will loose the next election.

^ Pretty much the point i was making Hazz

Of course one could always place the blame on PM Stanley Baldwin who initially gave women the opportunity to vote in that lovely, handsome, Mr Nicey, Tony Blair. That worked out well didn't it (well, for Tony it certainly did )

The Liberal Democrats should take note of this result. Their support has collapsed.

The next Gemeral Election will see the Lib Dems reduced to an insignificant fringe party.

Interesting points, Mr Lick. I was actually supposed to be voting in that election, but it was a couple of days after I left for Thailand & sleeping through council working hours for most of the time preceding my holiday, didn't get around to arranging a proxy or postal vote.

Funnily enough, most of the population of Barnsley must be in the same boat - only 36% voted.

Hardly surprising, they're only 1 generation removed from the pits & NUM headquarters is in central Barnsley.

That is what I saw from the result (& expected to see). Well done, Mr Clegg...
