Father Joe of klong Toey speaks: red shirts waited for pay

In this interview, the famous American priest, father Joe, speaks about the heartache being felt in klong toey due to the red shirt protests.
He talks about how many of the protesters wanted to go home before the massacres occured, but as they had not been paid as promised, "they waited around for their money"...

Radio Australia:Asia Pacific:Story:Communities in Thailand still reeling from political violence

it saddens me that these impoverished people are tricked into thinking they are doing the right thing by creating havoc . When infact they are fighting for somebody who stands for what they are supposed to be against - elitism, and the abuse of democracy.

For those of you who say it is no longer about thaksin, then all I have to say is that you are suckers for believing that. Admit you were wrong, and make peace your biggest concern.

This rubbish has gone on too long now, and the country is still spinning in. Downward spiral - all because of ONE selfish elitist u democratic pig of a man!

Interesting to have an independent 3rd party confirm this, that coupled with the 100s of dumped ID cards found after the protesters dispersed, pretty much confirms the fact.

It would be nice if during the next campaign trail that they make make referance and provide proof of the fact that the red shirt gimps did not get their promised 200b a day....but the leaders certainly got there millions.

Thus, in other words, Red Leadership used their followers as human shields, and deliberately held them back from leaving by using financial incentives and coercion?

I'm sure Panda, sabang, Myofb, et al will claim that these were just 'honest oversights' - just like it was honest oversight to leave automatic weapons and grenades behind.

It becomes harder and harder to spin how Red Leaders were all about peace and love, and that the violence was all conspired by the government, in the face of damning evidence like this.

I'm sure we'll hear next from Panda, sabang, Myofb, et al how Father Joe is just another stooge for the government... undoubtedly.

^ They're slow readers and can only focus on one thread at a time. Give them a while, they'll catch up eventually.

Thaksin is just so old school.
Thailand has moved on in the last 4 years from his style of government.
I like Abbo, he's well educated and articulate.
I've seen many interviews with him and he always seems to talk sense, I find him far more credible than lots of British politicians.
I don't think there is any doubt that Taky's money was behind the troubles, that coupled with that fact that people didn't get payed is Thailand old school elite taking the piss out of the peasants all over again.
Falling asleep and waking up is not the same as passing out and coming to.

Some of the demonstrators were paid, others were not.
Some money came from Thaksin sources, but a lot didn't too.
A bit of a concern is that some Provincial local governments were involved in UDD fundraising, which sounds a bit dubious to me.

Whats to 'apologise' about here? I'm not aware that anyone has denied this.
    Two wrong statements-
none of the UDD were paid, none of the money came from Thaksin
all of the UDD were paid, all of the money came from Thaksin

^ a large amount came from Thaksin, could be as high as 70% of the funding, who knows what else was paid with those funds

The mere fact I don't know left or right leads me to believe I cannot comment left or right about where the money come from but lets say nobody starved but some were left short changed.

I think Father Farang should pull his fucking head in and preach what he knows and that means fuck all to the Thais that died.

i have it on good authority that our good "father joe"" posts on td under the nic: DAFFYDUCK

    take no notice, folks.
"papajoe" and his opinion deserves no more respect than does any other poster or his opinion on td.

Father Joe Maier has lived in Klong Toey for 30 years and has done some great work in circumstances most people could not handle. I'm no fan of the church, but I have high respect for this man. Read his books. You will too

Well I have done my bit to help the kids of Klong Toey and have meet the father socially on many occasions and would go about telling him (TO HIS FACE) to keep his nose out of business that doesn't concern him for the sake of the kids he is taking care of.

A huge mistake for him to become politically involved and could hurt the people under his guidance.

If you Sir had any idea about how things worked here you would realize the same.

You had better put up or shut up mate. You obviously have not been in Thailand very long or are very ignorant of the man or what he has done for the poor people of Klong Thoey. Insinuating that he is Daffy Duck is a total insult to the man.

Rather than attacking the man, how about commenting on the facts he has put forward.

Why is that? Why would he expressing an opinion and recounting personal experiences 'hurt' anyone? Unless that opinion did not agree with the 'image' a certain party was trying to project.

When he represents a cause that is largely funded by "WHOEVER" he should not express his personal feelings and with regard to such a sensitive issue.

Everyone, and I mean everyone is still speculating about what happened over the course of the last 2 months and if his actions (being right or wrong) hurt those that rely on him then it is his own fault, end of story.

I have always respected Father Maier, and was a big fan of Father Brennan and his great work in Pattaya and am somewhat disappointed that F. Joe would make his personal feelings known publically.
