The Mae Fah Luang Arboretum is on the Border north of Chiang Rai and it is a place anyone interested in flowers (or birds) should visit.
It is an initiative of the late Kings Mother who went to the area when the hills were bare of trees and poppies were the main crop. She said "I will reforest these hills" and she did.
The name translated means 'Mother from the sky' this came about as she would arrive by helicopter.
One of her great loves was flowers so she started this Arboretum and now the two main cash crops of the area are flowers and coffee. Have you heard of "Doi Tung Coffee well that's where it comes from.
