Thats what I'm thinking.
Thats what I'm thinking.
stolen,
When you put a bottle upside down, the atmospheric pressure is pushing the water in the tumbler, the low pressure created inside the top of the bottle is causing the liquid not to fall down into the tumbler. So at equilibrium, the liquid inside the beer + water starts to settle down based on its density. Glycerine(or whatever Organic compound being denser than water settles down into the glass of water, Water from the tumbler will go into the beer bottle(but not much, if you dont shake the bottle). If the Carbon Dioxide had started effervescing, the gas content inside the beer bottle would have started increasing, this would have caused the beer to flow into the glass due to increasing air pressure.
Well, luckily I didn't have any tortoises on me at the time...
Glycerine is heavier than water agreed, but it is dissolved, it stays in solution.Originally Posted by jizzybloke

I don't drink beer. Does it work with a bottle of wine?
What about milk?
Or even water out of the tap?
i don't know i only stole that from another site!

Regarding the glycerine, does it have anything to do with OG? Original gangster, erm, I mean, original gravity?
Would have thought it would be added after fermentation.Originally Posted by Spin

Or better still, ask Johnny Ball, he will know.
Ok, Ive finished work. Gonna have a quick pint of Asahi to get me in the mood and then I'll pop down the shop and get a selection of local beers and test it for myself.
^Best test a few imported brews also.
Right, I'm all set up. Thank fuck the shop had run out of heineken. I got Singha, Leo, Asahi and Chang Light. They didn't have any full strength and I thought a lite beer would be good for the experiment.
Gotta crack on with this as I got proper road blocked by the police on the way home and I've not had a beer for 45mins.
I'll post it beer by beer so I can keep them in the fridge.
First up is beer Singha
-Pre preservative removal-Tastes like normal Singha
The pour
Its a bit tricky pouring it and taking a photo. It was my first attempt so i must have lost a bit of beer, but you can definitely see something coming out. Not sure if its beer or glycerin.
Whatever it is its staying at the bottom of the glass.
Taste - Gotta say it does taste different. A lot smoother and it hasn't lost any of its bubbles. It hasn't got the normal twang of an after taste.
Next up is the Chang, just gimme a minute to finish this bottle.
The glass of water with whatever it is mixed in it tastes like shit.
I probably wont drink that on the next bottles.
Stop it coz your making me laugh.
Ok calm,
Next up, Beer Chang Light, I've never tried this before and detest chang.
Here goes.
Pre Preservative taste- ...Urrh tastes like shit, I wouldn't drink this.
This time I didn't loose any beer. I got the camera thing, timing, sorted out and made the perfect transition to the pint glass.
Yep, there's some shit coming out.
It looks like I've lost a lot of beer but don't forget I took a big swig on the pre test test.
New beer taste - Hate to say it, but its a lot better. Very drinkable, the shitty taste has gone and I could probably drink a few of these. Probably couldn't be arsed with the whole water/pint glass thing though.
Ok, In the name of science, I had a proper go at this time because on the next bottle I'm going to add the amount off liquid lost from the bottle (minus my pre test test swig) to an clean glass of water for taste comparison.
God damn it really tasted bad, not beery in any way.
I bet the Bangkok Thai girls are all over you when you go out in that t shirt
Ok, lets see what the japanese have to offer. Asahi is next, I wanted to save this till last because its my favorite but the leo wasn't cold enough when I bought it so needs more time in the freezer.
Pre preservative removal taste - Fantastic, not as good as a draft but furlongs ahead of anything else so far.
The pour
Once again a perfect pour, I've really got the hang of this now. This time though there seems to be less shit coming out.
Looks like more in this photo though. I did take a bigger swig in the pre test.
After preservative removal (allegedly) taste - Not as good, doesn't taste like my normal brew. There's a twangy after taste and its no where near as crisp. I'm starting to think that its more to do with fucking around with the bottles by turning them upside down. It tastes more like thai beer.
Either that or the japs had it right in the first place.

Ok this one was new water with just the necks worth of a beer added to it. Leo by the way.
Didn't taste anything like the previous glasses. It just tasted like water with a bland beer taste to it. The previous glasses were positively vile so I'm now leaning towards the idea that something is getting separated from the beer with the glass trick.
