Invisible man shows his true colours

Liu Bolin melts into earthquake rubble. His work requires him to pose for more than ten hours at a time

Just like a chameleon, artist Liu Bolin can blend into any background.

The real-life invisible man can disappear into his surroundings – no matter how complicated they might be.
In a series of mind-boggling photographs, the 36-year-old melts into red phone boxes and even earthquake rubble.

It means people walking by while he is carrying out his performance often have no idea he is nearby until he moves away.
To create his pictures, Mr Liu, of Shandong, China, uses his own body as a canvas, painting himself to merge with whatever is behind him.

    Wallflower: He’s lost in graffiti

The photos can take more than ten hours to complete.
'Some people call me the invisible man but for me it's what is not seen in a picture which tells the story,' he said.
The artist was forced from his studio by the Chinese government – an experience which affected him deeply.
'The forced removal is in fact my direct inspiration of this series of photographs, “Hiding in the City”,' he added.

It's amazing the amount of work that goes into achieving that effect.

    Brilliant !!

He could save himself a lot of time if he downloaded PhotoShop

    But cool photos nevertheless.

If he's painting himself how can he see what's behind him and if he's lined up correctly?

i have seen quite a bit of this stuff, and it fascinates the hell out of me.
have had this idea in my head for the past few years, of painting my thai house to "disappear" into the bush and the bamboo patch that surrounds it.
i am sure that the thais will then be convinced i live up to one of the nicknames i earned over there:
    "farang-baa",
or perhaps they will adopt the nickname my ex liked to use from time to time :
    "teengtong"!!!

I'm guessing he takes photo's of the scene first FP. The question is, does he paint himself or does he merely stand there and have someone else paint him from the photo?

Don't worry about what they say tsicar, do it. Problem is, this dude does it from one singular viewpoint, i.e. directly in front of the camera lens. The problem you'd have is people view your house from different angles, thus making it almost (i guess) impossible to paint your house to disappear into the surroundings.

Why not use that Japanese cloaking thing I've seen knocking around, uses some form of refraction. basically displays what's behind an object, that would solve your problem from an angle perspective. Costly, but it would fool those Somchai's in the village! Hehe

Funny you should mention that, saw some displays of it and its potential uses on TV last night.
Pretty amazing stuff, a bloke pulled this cape around himself and disappeared apart from the creases in the cloak which you'd have to be looking for pretty hard to see.
One potntial use they demonstrated is the elimination of the blind spot in cars aparently.
Quite dificult to believe it wasn't some kind of trick actually.
They were saying the basic technology has been around since 2003 but is only just becoming viable as costs come down and the computing power increases.
