    Impressions of Bangkok

I was in Bangkok on wednesday for the first time in four years. having stayed away for a while a few things I'd forgotten about stood out.

Number one was the over powering smell of sewage. If your anywhere outside it reeks. Some places it's extremely nasty, such as near the canals.

The mixture of pollution and humidity makes walking around really unpleasant.

I was surprised by the amount of major building work going on. I found myself near a place in chinatown where I lived in the early eighties. The only thing I recognised were the road names.

    Bangkok is like another country.

I don't notice the smells so much now, I s;pose you get used to it.

It has been horribly humid lately though, very very uncomfortable indeed.

Like almost all international cities, Bangkok would be a great place for me to live IF I could afford to live in the exact location I wanted, in the apartment I wanted, and live the lifestyle I want to live.

Big, pollutted, takes time to get around. But lots of positives.

It's a horrible, noisy, dirty, smelly place.

Total shithole and a human anthill.

You have such a way with words don't you?

I negate your chosen words of shithole and horrible though!

    Human anthill, hehehe yup!

Was condemned to being in Bangkok for 1 week in every 6 to oversee claims being handled by our Thailand office ( was based in Taiwan at the time).
Didn't like it one little bit !
Stopped in Quality Inn ( that was a joke !) next door to the office in Lumpini Tower - 12 hour days- grab a few beers and some food - usually at the old Bobbies Arms in the Patpong car park- and that was it !!
Undoubtedly missed out on a lot !
Friday night was always the Crown Royal(?) in Patpong as it was the insurance world 'networking' bar.
Will have to get there sometime and have a real look around

Maybe being raised in a big city tends to skew my view of living here in Bangkok. I enjoy choices,…….. restaurants, entertainment venues, International airport, public transportation, easy access to the beach, variety of people, etc.,….that you might not find in a smaller city.

Sure the smell is revolting at times here in BKK, the pollution is horrid, the heat I am used to.

I will be moving to Khon Kean in a few months and I am not looking forward to it. I enjoy visiting Khon Kean,……..but I will be looking forward to getting back to Bangkok, soon.

You might give up some peace and tranquility living in Bangkok, but I think it is well worth it.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Bangkok is one of the most vibrant, multicultural cities in the world and I am proud to call this place my home.

I know people that go back to their home countries and save their penny's for 2 years and to be able to come back to enjoy the delights that this amazing city and country offers for a few weeks.

I am blessed to call Thailand my home!

Even if I could afford to live exactly where I wanted and have the lifestyle I wanted, I would not choose Bangkok.

And to be blunt, the nightlife was all it had for me, and I've had my fun.

I think the nightlife attractions attract a lot of dopey people who park in Bangkok and end up just haning off of Sukhumvit. Nothing wrong with this. to each their own.

If I walk around for just 1 hour my throat hurts from the pollution. I may have weak lungs and throat. I could not live there again under any circumstances. Just a brief visit to enjoy the city and then I'm off.

Humans in quicksand. Cacophony. Chaos. Blue smoke from two-stroke. My lungs scream alout asking me "Why? Why did you do this to me? Why did you take me here?" I respond by my continued lungering gait, amid the shops, noises, and putrid odors.

Finally I arrive at my destination.

On a less poetic (and serious note) I don't see the attraction of Bangers, after the honeymoon wears off, and the exotic settings become familiar.

Nevertheless, I've had many good times in Bangers.

Most huge cities stink. Most are noisy. Most smell. Most involve wasting time to get around.

some places I have known for years have changed over night, construction is everywhere,

the city is quite dense, and quite aggressive in its design, no green area

I like bit cahotic cities, so it fits that definition perfectly, and I wouldn't live anywhere else in Thailand. Pattaya is far worse IMO.

It's dirty, smelly in places, the people lack common sense (most), i'm a scumbag living in a foreign country (in their eyes), but i'm much happier here than I ever was in the UK and my time is my own.

I also feel blessed to call this country my home. But after 3 years in BKK I feel far more blessed to have discovered Chiang mai where I have spent the better part of the last 5 and dread the thought of ever havng to go back.

Maybe I would do the same from here, save my pennies and spend NO MORE than a couple days in bangers. After a long break, a bit of the excitement comes back for a couple days, but is quickly worn thin after being exposed to the same old routine in a city like that.

That's been my thought on the subject since after I had been out of BKK a couple times within the first year I was there.

Does have it's moments. One could still extend romantic Asian stereotypes toward BKK.

    I adore Bangkok.

Lived in Phuket for several years, wouldn't go back to live but nice to visit.

Lived in Samui for a short time, will never set foot on that island again...EVER.

Bangkok is great, those that are closed to it's charms and vibrance just miss out as far as I am concerned.

Not a 'city' person but have had to live in or near one for the last 15 years that I was employed .
The only one that I can honestly say that I enjoyed was Taipei !!!
Would go back there tomorrow if my pension was bigger and the visa regulations eased off a bit !!

^ Carnegies in Taipei is a good place to pick up chicks. However, they are all "freebies" so if you are a fat old git you wont have much luck.

As for Bangkok - I really like it. I live in a nice apartment in a nice neighbourhood which helps.

However, I much prefer Athens where I lived for a couple of years - great place to live.

I like to visit Bangkok- it's a vibrant city, but I wouldn't choose to live there unless I was working.
