Do you make lists? Are Lists Anal Retentive?

Do you, due to old age, or just lack of memory make lists? I'm not usually a list maker, as I usually depend on my memory to remember what I have to do. Even when I go to the grocery store, I usually just keep my list in my memory.

There are times, however, that I may make a list. If I have too many things to do, and can't possibly fit everything in. A case in point.. I have a little over two months to pack, sell stuff, organize a trip, get a job, etc.. It is overwhelming in fact. Perhaps, it is time to make a list.

Do lists help you get organized, and finish what you must do? Do you make shopping lists?

I only makes lists for certain things - when I have to buy a lot of little things that are needed but that I don't consider important.

    Socially:

I make list of websites, book title and new language words from a small notebook I carry in my pocket with a pen/pencil.

What do you mean 'anal retentive'? Now THAT is the question I'd like answered, I've heard the term over the years and it makes no sense to me.

The term anal-retentive (or anally retentive, anal retentive), commonly abbreviated to "anal", is used conversationally to describe a person with such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, and can be carried out to the detriment of the anal-retentive person. The term derives from Freudian psychoanalysis.

    Origins

In the psychology of Freud, the anal stage is said to follow the oral stage of infant/early-childhood development. This is a time when an infant's attention moves from oral stimulation to anal stimulation (usually the bowels but occasionally the bladder), usually synchronous with learning to control their excretory functions, a time of toilet training. Freud theorized that children who experience conflicts during this period of time may develop "anal" personality traits, namely those associated with a child's efforts at excretory control: orderliness, stubbornness, a compulsion for control, as well as a generalized interest in collecting, possessing, and retaining objects.

^Yeah, used it as a joke. I've heard many people say that making lists for everything, obsessively cleaning etc..is anal retentive. Hence, the word. Certainly a freudian term.

I figured you were a list maker, with absolutely nothing to do.

This concerns me greatly. What do you think will become of my 3 year old boy who keeps sticking his finger in his bum then asking me to "smell my finger dad" ?
Will he grow up to be a criminal ?
    A college student?

Has nothing to do with old age, or lack of memory -- when you have a LOT of things on your plate, maintaining lists helps you manage a large number of things -- particularly maintaining items with a far off due date on your radar and in focus.

I don't particularly care about grocery lists -- but I do maintain them for :

    - items to pack for my next trip.
    - things to do on my next trip (so I can get them done on the first 1-3 days)
    - projects to complete, and their state of completion
    etc....

I can see how for most people, lists are not important, as they have next to nothing of real importance to manage.

Lists are one of the differences between successful and efficient people, and those who are not.

I'm a note taker. Just keeps me straight with things....though, I don't dwell on an angst aspect. It just is. And most certainly don't equat such ideals {do or don't} with class distinction.

Absolutes? Self-imposed standards {towards everyone}? This would include the fabricated models of Western pyscho-babble and kin philosophies.

I don't think you can equate success to people who don't make lists.
I always make a list when I have too many things to do. Other than that, I don't feel the need to. Just asking if others make lists. This thread has urged me to make a list..and stop procrastinating.

I've started to make 'to do' lists, to ensure I get everything I want done. I'm not sure if it makes me more efficient, but it does make me feel guilty when one of the day's tasks is not crossed off & has to be put onto another day's list.

I make lists. A daily journal about what's on for the next day. Easy to keep things organised. I also cut up projects into parts so they aren't so daunting. Equate it to: build a house. That's the big overwhelming goal, but if you chop it down to its parts, its easy.
Grocery lists -- I'm useless. I write them and forget them on the kitchen table. Haven't starved yet, tho. And the neighbours always have Creamo.

^Forgetting them on the kitchen table, isn't always due to old age either. I do it, all the time. A useless waste of time, if you forget them at the house.
