Nice to know but I refrained

Safer for me and my wallet.

Yes, Thais seem happy to be wherever they are and don't seem bothered to change, whereas we tend to be always worrying about how we can "improve" our lives.
It is all to do with intelligence levels. People who don't have the intelligence to worry and think about problems and the future are probably happier. Then again, animals can't do that either so are probably happier, but who wants to be an animal?

I always laugh when I here farangs say "I love Thailand because everyone returns smiles here". Well mate, you could have saved the flight and got yourself a job as a carer in a home for retards back in your country. The residents would probably all grin back at you too, talk simpleton rubbish, giggle a lot, and have a 3-day water pistol fight with you, so you'd be in paradise there too if that is all you want out of life.

Yeah, but back in Blighty the weather's crap, you can't buy cheap beer or whiskey, and choice of partners (from what I've heard) is not to everyone's taste, or may be limited to who would fancy you. And Thai food is bloody expensive there. Far better off here...

    Definitely

You can buy very cheap beer and whiskey in Englands fine range of supermarkets, on a par with here.

You couldn't 14 years ago, when I last lived there... Not as cheap as Chang & 100 Pipers, anyway...

Not in my opinion. For the seven-month period of April to October, which is the majority of the year, I'd rather have the UK's 15-25 degrees to Thailand's 30-40 degrees. I think most Thais would too. Plus the UK's rainfall during that period is about 15% that of Thailand's. However, the other five loooong months in the UK do suck.

I'd say its the other way round. Way less than a pound for a large can or bottle of good beer, and in the UK earning a pound is far easier than earning its equivalent amount in Thailand. And who wants cheap whisky? Is Thailand a haven for cheapskates with no taste?

This stuff is nicer than chang, and 65 pence (40 baht) per 500 ml can in Tesco UK

Not in my experience. Four of the best five girls I have ever dated were met in the UK. Only one was a Brit, the others being a Korean, Japanese, and Thai. The quality is far better in the UK, but Thailand wins for quantity. In Thailand people can find partners who don't fancy them? That is very sad.

I make my own Thai food in the UK, pretty darn cheaply. But only about once per week, as my world doesn't revolve around Thai food and all things Thai.

Well it's certainly not to permanently hide from things I can't cope with in my native country.

However, I don't want to spend my entire life in the UK, and the experience of living and working in a small kingdom in south east asia as a mirror image to living and working in a small kingdom in north west europe is part of the journey that is my life. It was an alternative to settling down in my early 30s (like almost everyone I know back there), which I plan to do in my early 40s instead as I saw no hurry to enter middle-aged life only a decade or so after reaching adulthood.

    Yourself?

At the risk of a big fat red, I would honestly have to say that happiness is knowing that I would never write something as pretentious as that.....

Whoever said it was? Odd thing to automatically come out with; almost defensive.

Fair enough. But the question was why are you here. You've clearly little time for the people or the place. Why not Cambodia, or China, or Korea or anyone of the other Asian/SEA nations?

    Yourself?
    It's me job, innit.

    Cambodia - Less developed Thailand
    China - Still too communist
Korea - I like the place, but it is scarily xenophobic

I decided a couple of years ago that Hong Kong would probably be the best place to live in Asia. However, due to the resulting competition that creates between wannabe expats, finding a good job there is damn difficult. I gave up looking a year or so ago because I'm not desperate to continue living in Asia. It is easy to see just by walking around. The many westerners living and working there look normal & professional, unlike the vast majority I see in Thailand.

I question myself very often about the advantages and disadvantages about living here in Thailand or my birth contry Australia.

Basically being happy anywhere is being able to accept the disadvantages in one country over the advantages of the other.

Yes, Thailand can be a very frustrating country to live in with its grey laws, corruption, anti-foreigner sentiment and constant hot and humid climate but at the end of the day I cannot see myself moving back in the very near future.

So as I write this post I feel happy and content with my lot.

Interesting. So you've conciously accepted, what is to your mind, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or even less 'best'. I fail to see how you can validly project that onto others around you. Each to their own and all that.

I can tell you now for instance that in my experience it's not that hard to find a job in Hong Kong at all. I've been offered two in the last two years and that's without even looking.

Believe it or not Ant, I want to spend a few years living somewhere I consider to be fairly weird, simply because it stops me taking the many good aspects of living in the UK for granted whenever I'm back there. I think it is worth investing a few years in, and is an interesting ride. If all Brits did the same there would, in my opinion, be a lot less grumbling about things there.

Interesting that you said "job" and I said "good job". Perhaps we work at different levels...

I can fully understand that. Whenever I go home it always amazes me what a great place it actually is. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that guff.

That being said what I don't understand is that, why, if that's your rationale, the need to constantly bag everything while you're here? To me it seems diametrically opposed to your end-goal.

No I don't think so. 'Good job' is inherently subjective of course, but it's not like people are going to take the time/effort to offer you a bad one. At least not in my example.

So why are you living in Thailand, Ant? There has to be more reasons than "it's me job, innit" unless you live to work.

An hour or two per week of venting that nobody is forced to read. I don't see the problem with that, personally. Plus it'll be interesting to refer back to in future years (presuming the forum is still here) to remind me just how weird some things here were
