In one of my biology lectures last week Professor Stephen Nowicki told me that retro-viruses like AIDS are unusual in that they do not merely hijack the replication machinery inside the host cell but actually sever sections of the DNA chromosome strands and insert their own genetic code into the sequence of the host organism using reverse transcriptase (hence retro-virus) and then let the host cell replication proceed as normal except that the viral code now gets replicated as well as the host's own nuclear DNA
