Could be just a confusion on terms but if resident permit (residency) why the need for citizenship?

"it allows my wife to buy land, which Thais married to a farang may not"

    This one not completely true.

He may have opted for the retirement rather than marriage visa but having to deposit 800,000 baht is for retirement.

The story has a few holes in it though
    Article
Story looks like complete Bullshit to me, its full of holes, the farangs that I know of with Thai citizenship have kept their own western names and he don't know much if he is quoting a "wife can buy land" law that was rescinded about 10 yrs ago. If he was a Thai citizen he would be able to buy land in his own name.

    This is too easy.

Grab a skank from Yodsak, take a trip to her village, bribe her old lady to adopt you & buy yourself some land, a house, get a job & live happy ever after?

    Got to be bullshit.

I'm not sure about the western name bit.
A friend of mine could only have his son's western name used if he could prove that the name actually meant something. Surname was no problem but christian name had to have a meaning. This was in 2007.

Thetters, both my daughter have western christian names as well as surnames.

I asked if there were any restrictions on names, they told us none at all, although they did add, "as its not obscene." This was in 2002 and 2004

Should have added my 3rd daughter, Sandra, Sonya & Paula, I ain't got much imagination

Probably the same old story, depends which officer you speak to at which office. TiT.

In Phrae they would not accept Stanley until shown that it meant something.
He got away with "Stoney Meadow"

Not true. My wife's aunt had no children and is getting up in age, almost 70 I believe. She was a teacher for years and there is something where the children would get 1 million baht when she dies. She did not want the money to go to anyone but my wife, so she adopted here at age 24. otherwise the money would have went to all her brothers and she said she did not want to see the baht going for booze!!!!

That's just normal, if you become thai you are expected to act like a thai and support your parents so your new dad will retire from tuk tuk driving.

Yeah, just got to get the official certificate, anyone know if I'd have to apply for this in my homecountry or if the local village doc can do it?

I think any adult can be adopted, as for thai names on birth certificates they have a problem with middle names as there isn't a space for them, but they will stick in a few middle names for you if you wish, about 20 years ago they changed the laws allowing mongerals to have Thai citizenship, before that they were foked and had no citezenship unless you were married.
