    "Brain Fitness"

    How fit is your brain?

Saw a good show on it on pbs recently:

The Brain Fitness Program PBS 16x9 NEW Trailer

And apparently it's a big thing now; anything tp do perhaps with the millions of Boomers reaching 65 soon?

It actually claims to be based on physical neurology:
Neurogenesis is the creation of new neurons. The more active a particular brain cell is, the more connections it develops with its neighboring neurons through a process called dendritic sprouting. A single neuron can have up to thirty thousand such connections, creating a dense web of interconnected activity throughout the brain. Each neuron can then be stimulated directly through experience (real or imagined) or indirectly through these connections from its neighbors, which saves the cell from cell death.

Physical exercise boosts the brain’s rate of neurogenesis throughout life, while mental exercise increases the rate at which those new brain cells survive and make functional connections into existing neural networks. Both physical exercise and the challenge from mental exercise increase the secretion of nerve growth factor, which helps neurons grow and stay healthy.

    snip

    Effective mental stimulation should provide:
    • Novelty
    • Variety
    • Challenge
    • Practice

All do their brain training daily.

Well the brain really does grow neuronal tissue when it learns new things, doesn't it?

Don't think so but does a fine job of preserving existing cerebral capacity!

My brain is supremely unfit, it gets tired simply from counting stairs as I walk up them.

An odd affliction counting stairs unless one is blind!

^Always be prepared, that's my motto! Should the day ever come - touch wood - that I become blind I'll know exactly how many stairs there are. Well, I would if I didn't keep losing count and forgetting.

Funny you should say that though. Just recently I've taken to closing my eyes when walking down the stairs at home. I don't know why.

^Injury wish I think, not enough stairs to be fatal. Just enough to cause grevious harm.
