    Anzac Day 2025

Millions pause to mark Anzac Day as dawn breaks across Australia

As dawn breaks across the country, millions of people will pause to mark Anzac Day in tribute to the men and women who have served in Australia's defence forces.

Solemn dawn services will be held from suburban parks to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and overseas from the shores of Gallipoli to the fields of Villers-Brettoneux in France.

The rest of the day will be marked by parades and wreath-laying events, followed by the usual long-weekend celebrations.

I read that there was some coordinated jeering in Melbourne at the dawn service. Apparently by white supremacists.

Happy Anzac day to all our Kiwi and Aussies brothers and sisters.

It was always a big day in the Hiunter, morning service tehn down the pub for 2 up a gambling game played by the diggers at Gallipoli. It was in my day the only day overt gambling between individual "punters' in pubs (depsite the pokie parlours and TAB !)

    How To Play Two Up

    1. The 'Ringer' places two coins, tail side up, on a bit of wood known as the 'Kip'.
    2. The Players stand outside the circle known as the 'Ring'. ...
    3. Two heads means the 'Spinner' wins, two tails mean the 'Spinner' loses their bet and the right to spin.

Huge excitement from a shouting crowd for small stakes! Side bets of course
Russia went from being 2nd strongest army in the world to being the 2nd strongest in Ukraine

Apparently there was some jeering at the mandatory aboriginal Welcome to Country opening piece.

TBH I don't think WTC is very welcome at things like the Dawn Service, with military commemoration being more of a conservative political minded activity and WTC being more of a lefty thing.

I think they should pick and choose where WTC is done a bit more thoughtfully.

You mention 'lefties', but WTC is not about 'lefties', is it.

    It's their land.

No need to 'pick and choose'.

The respect due to ancestors who loved their land is the same reality for the aboriginal and diggers once you take off the Trumpanzee blinkers we can see we are all one people who can learn and respect each others positive traditions.
I hope you were not egging on the racist hecklers who cannot see the irony that all non aboriginals are immigrnats and their descendants many of them crimimal or seen as lefties in England like the Tolpuddle martyrs.

I think WTC should be reserved for occasions where we are actually welcoming a foreigner to Australian soil.

To do it at every public domestic function is divisive and implying that non-aboriginals are in some way not automatically welcome on their own home soil.

Apparently neo Nazis were boo ing the welcome to country intro delivered by an indigenous Australian. I personally found it disgusting and just a political stunt pre elections. Ffs people were there to honour our soldiers who died fighting for the country. Why bring in this nonsense? Some are saying the trumpets of patriots paid for the rent a crowd? Who knows? Fucking disgusting behaviour. Btw I think.the indigenous welcome to country isn't a threat to white rednecks.
Most people are Kunts.dont believe me? Next time you see a group of people. Shout out OI KUNT watch em all turn around.

    Why are you such a witless, bigoted c u n t?

Indigenous Australians who fought for their country came back to much the same discrimination as before. For example, many were barred from Returned and Services League clubs, except on Anzac Day. Many of them were not given the right to vote for another 17 years.

I see Looper's comments as reasonable. It's important for people with those views to be free to state them.

I would say the following was morally wrong.

I would also say that repeatedly 'welcoming' people to their own home implies that they are somehow not entirely welcome to begin with, and is divisive and also wrong.

Agree, while I may disagree with Looper he is entitled to express his opinion.

Right to free speech is liberty, but not licence to for example incite violence, or cry fire in a crowded theatre.

While we all love a bit of banter abouts dogs cooking, football threads etc serious insults demean all including the hurlers.

if they are invited to do a welcome to county , then let them do it - people are quite happy to listen to the rest of the pompous cnuts flapping gums

they could have welcome to the penis' of transvestites for all I give a fcuk

tilt at fcuking windmills if that is your thing because these are the ditches you chose to fight to the death about , but most of us find you irritating
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Personally I think the "Welcome to country" can be overdone, as they say...familiarity breeds contempt. Have it too often and people will get bored with it.
By all means have it for special occasions, but my former local council had it before every monthly meeting at a mere $1000 of ratepayers money every time. Was that really necessary?

Welcome to country is overdone, unnecessary and divisive. A bit off the subject of Anzac day. I can only add my fathers thoughts, himself an army veteran of world war two fighting the Japanese. He never participated in any Anzac day parade. I once asked him why. He said to me when he came back from the war he wanted to forget the things he had seen, he did not want to relive the war and saw no glory in reliving the past. I have respected his view on this. My family has a history of Army service over generations.

He’s entitled to express his opinion, as others are entitled to tell him he’s dog whistling for the racist cvnts.

Raising issues or making points that indigenous people might not like doesn't make a person racist.

And yet funnily enough he "thinks" people should not be able to express any views that upset the joos without fear of deportation.

    Fucking funny that, eh?
