You were a bit before my time.
I started work in 1979 as a trainee computer operator on an IBM system 370 / 148
    2 Megabytes of memory.

Not quite the X-Y machine I remember, but similar. IIRC the 10 and 11 were X and Y on the machine I used to write my first programs in Fortran.
Definitely the worst line editor I have ever used...

Then we progressed to this piece of magic, and it really felt like magic at the time...

The one we used had the paper punch tape feed at the front rather than on the left side but this is very similar. A remote terminal to a main computer several miles away with a modem connection. I loved it because it had the same daisy wheel printer that the football results were given on Grandstand.

Exact same thing happened when we first got the internet.

The only thing was that it was dial up going through a modem and phone line and pictures of Jenna Jameson would take 3 and a half wanks to fully open. Never mind the fokin' sound of it connecting after tiptoeing into the computer room at 1am. I can still hear it.

    "c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon"

Then you might hear someone that got up to go to the bathro..... restroom. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

The ol' 1am flick of the wrist after tiptoeing into the computer room with that dialup sound that seemed to reverberate throughout the house could be like running the gauntlet of Viet Cong tunnels at times.

In fact, Naypyitaw was a very nice place (for me) to work. Thanks to the oppressive regime, the roads were swept clean every day by undernourished lackeys. I stayed for several years in a 4-star hotel which was almost devoid of customers. I cycled to work and the police stopped all cars at road junctions to let me pass, (presumably because they thought that the only foreigners who live in Naypyitaw are VIPs).

To counter this decadent lifestyle, I spent my weekends teaching English for free at the nearby orphanage, just outside the city. The police would follow my motorcycle to see where I was going and would often stop me to check what I was doing. A smile and politeness often got me through the checkpoints, but occasionally they would refuse to let me pass and then I had to go 'off-road' on tiny country lanes to reach the orphanage.

    Interesting times!
