You were a bit before my time.
I started work in 1979 as a trainee computer operator on an IBM system 370 / 148
2 Megabytes of memory.

Not quite the X-Y machine I remember, but similar. IIRC the 10 and 11 were X and Y on the machine I used to write my first programs in Fortran.
Definitely the worst line editor I have ever used...

Then we progressed to this piece of magic, and it really felt like magic at the time...


The one we used had the paper punch tape feed at the front rather than on the left side but this is very similar. A remote terminal to a main computer several miles away with a modem connection. I loved it because it had the same daisy wheel printer that the football results were given on Grandstand.

The only thing was that it was dial up going through a modem and phone line and pictures of Jenna Jameson would take 3 and a half wanks to fully open. Never mind the fokin' sound of it connecting after tiptoeing into the computer room at 1am. I can still hear it.
