Would You Walk a Mile for a Smile? A Thai Smile?

The reason I ask is that, about an hour ago, I was walking along a dusty road with barking dogs and plenty of roosters.

I was feeling hot and disgusted. I almost thought I could not take another step, in fact.

    And then....

As I was walking by a small shop selling flavored ice, some young thing looked up at me.

    Our eyes met.

And she smiled the most beautiful smile.

So, I would gladly walk a mile for a smile like that.

Her smile put a spring in my step.

Has this ever happened to you?

    Regards,

Originally, this is what I had anticipated.

However, as you can see, I might be missing my avatar.

And, this was the only reason I signed my post....

I actually select shops based on the smiles. I used to go to a cha yen shop and over time I noticed the young woman never looks up from her phone. She just hides and plays on it. One time I waited for way too long and finally had to walk away. An old lady gasped and said ''Oh!'' so I think this was her mother and the mother saw what happened.

Been going to the shop since then. The woman is older and not as cute but she is always happy to take the order. And the price is lower too.

Yeah, but I didn't have to suffer walking for a mile to obtain that. Just pop to one of the garages to refuel the car, always a lovely smile and a free bottle of water to go with it.

In Bangkok years ago an adorable young one approached me, followed me into a Skytrain cab and then through the turnstile out of the BTS station.

I was walking to the MRT station and couldn’t shake her off. A few Thai women who were watching were about to step in to help before I sat down on the steps with her by my side. I did my best to explain to her why she couldn’t come home with me.

I have a feeling she wanted to give me more than a smile.

    To answer the question.

Would You Walk a Mile for a Smile? A Thai Smile?

    No, I wouldn’t.

There are 13 way's to which a Thai smiles.

    1. Yim thang nam taa: The “I’m so happy I’m crying” smile.
    2. Yim thak thaai: The “polite” smile for someone you barely know.
    3. Yim cheun chom: The “I admire you” or “I’m proud of you” smile.
    4. Fuen Yim: The stiff smile, also known as the “I should laugh at the joke even though it’s not funny” smile.
    5. Yim mee lessanai: The smile which masks something wicked, such as bad intent.
    6. Yim yaw: The teasing, or “I told you so” smile.
    7. Yim yae-yae: The “I know things look pretty bad but there’s no point in crying over spilt milk” smile.
    8. Yim sao: The sad smile.
    9. Yim haeng: The dry smile, also known as the “I know I owe you the money, but I don’t have it” smile.
    10. Yim thak thaan: The “I disagree with you” smile, also known as the “You can go ahead and propose it but your idea’s no good” smile.
    11. Yim cheuad-cheuan: The “I am the winner” smile; a smile given to a losing competitor.
    12. Yim soo: The “smiling in the face of an impossible struggle” smile.
    13. Yim mai awk: The “I’m trying to smile, but can’t” smile.

I do not mind the Scottish accent.

However, it is the Celtic music that I prefer.

    Vocal Celtic is best.

And this might be second best, or third.

When I was younger, I could really get into Celtic music.

Celtic music made me cry when I was a younger version of myself, these days.

I like nothing modern, mind you.

    What was your question?

A mile isn't very far to walk but walking a mile just to get a smile seems a bit sad. However, if she sold good ice-cream, or worked in a coffee shop, or trained in a gym, or was to be found anywhere else that I might frequent, then I'm sure I'd gladly walk there - but driving or riding there would be more convenient in Thailand.
