What was your first laptop ?

I got my first one in 2007. It was a Toshiba Satellite A105. I loved it and took good care of it. It looks modern even in todays standards. The screen was so crisp. It had media controls on the left side of the keyboard and a volume wheel. It was sure hard to get used to having no volume wheel after the motherboard died on me. I also liked the row of status lights on the bottom left of the keyboard bezel.

After the thing died 4 years later, I realized they are just consumables and you don't have to take very good care of them. The next Toshiba was a piece of shit. You could tell that they were getting out of the game. I feel like buying one on Ebay if they're still around. Just as a vintage item.

    What a unit

1982. A ZX Spectrum I think - if you can call it a laptop.

First proper laptop was in the year 2000. I've still got it somewhere. I'll try and find it to see what brand it is. I can remember the cost - £1200. It was a good spec for the time.

Was given to me by brother in law

    I loved it.

Difficult to remember the exact name and model. I bought it while I was in Penang in 1996/97. I am pretty sure it was a Sony Viao but could have been an earlier model.

I never bought a Sony again.

Next laptops were Dells and I was very happy with them.

Next I bought a Toshiba, never again, preferred the now outdated Dell at the time.

Then I moved over to HP and have bought HP ever since. Not so keen on their cheaper models but the high end ones are pretty decent. Current one is a Z book with 32GB of RAM and has been pretty solid for several years now. Main reason for choosing is the mil spec allowing me to use it in silly high temperatures and humidity on the farm...still runs perfectly with ants marching out of every crook and cranny...and I can open up and upgrade or replace any item without losing warranty (although warranty has long run out now)

IBM Think Pad. Still have it in a cupboard but about to be tossed in the bin as I make the final move to TL.

Sony Vios. I still have it but can't find the charger. It ran XP when I got it then I upgraded to Windows 7 I think? If I can find the charger I'll try fire it up one last time to recover some photos.

I had a mini HP thing for a while for travel.

2013 I got a Macbook Pro which lasted me 9 years until they stopped making updates. It became a dukebox in the bar until the lack of updates could no longer load YouTube properly.

Then I bought another Macbook Pro, why wouldn't I?

Sony Vios ended up being the slickest looking laptops out there for awhile. I had one for my 3rd laptop. 2011 to 2015. I still have it. But the hinge fuct up and cracked and went to shit. I have a charge cord for it.

A little 12.1 inch Sharp that was the thinnest unit in 2001. Took that thing all over the world!

DEll (Inspiron 1300, maybe). 2005-ish. About to set out traveling around the world with no intention of going back home or no idea where I might end up. 500 quid. 512gb. I remember feeling like King-Shit sitting in the departure lounge, it open on my lap, in Championship Manager bliss.

The trouble was. Lack of internet long term. For 2-3 years I would take a USB stick to internet cafes, download whatever, then insert into the lappy that was rarely connected to the net so no protection was ever updated. Not that it had anything but one antivirus anyway.

After 3 years it was so full of virus/malware/bloatware/spyware crap it had to be thoroughly deep cleaned with everything reinstalled.

    Lesson learned.

Don't know if it counts but I had one marketed as a pocket computer in the early 1980s. It was a Sharp PC-1500 with a massive 4KB onboard memory, an external cassette tape recorder for additional memory and a 4 colour printer/plotter. It could be programmed in Basic, which was part of the fun. I had to throw it away because it used to make girls swoon in airport lounges around the world.

    Or so I thought.

PowerBook 140 in 1993 used to teach myself statistics for the results I was collecting doing my fieldwork in Little Robbers Gulch near Baggs, Wyoming. Bought a PC once I got home to get the Bay Area and began writing my thesis. Between a real screen and time-share using a terminal emulator on an Unix workstation over a 9600 baud modem I never touched an Apple computer again.

My first laptop was a Lenovo bought around 2007. I got rid of Winders and slapped Ubuntu and it ran until around 2017 as the wife's general laptop, it's now in the trash. I booted up before we moved here and the screen was dead. In about 2012 I bought a Samsung laptop that I used for work until just last year when I bought a Huawei.

Not bullshit, my Dell Inspiron (or similar) with 12GB RAM and running Windows NT cost around that in 1999/2000.
