Apple Powerbook G4.... early 00's from emory.
I can remember the first computer I ever worked on because it was a dial up connection to Cheltenham GCHQ on Friday afternoons. However, I have no idea which of their computers we were operating. Initially we sent 80-column IBM punched cards coded in Fortran but later we could use the teletypewriter and input the code from punched tape.
The methods were so cumbersome and time consuming that I thought it a waste of time back in the early 70's. The HP2100 with terminals was a lot better and also had the Star Trek text game, which made waiting for compilations a little more bearable.
Colleagues laugh at me for always using the vi editor but if any of them had used punch cards or ed (the early line editor) they would realise why I liked it and stayed with it ever since. I still haven't seen a better programming editor with as much power as the gvim spin-off. EMACS, I hear someone shout from the back, yeah, okay but not guaranteed to be installed on every Unix or Linux machine.
I had a HP Palmtop. Does that count?
I use it for email to find jobs. I had to dial in to IBM/ATT in Singapore.
I am computer illiterate. I hate the processes involved in trying to do something on a computer requiring a lesson. But I persevered in order to work but in the end whenever something went wrong because I failed to post something to my G spot, or E drive, or whatever, I discovered the best solution to my increasing frustration and despair - I found a young person.
But I realised I needed a home computer to function within the wider world. So I got a laptop, a Samsung 17 inch screen with which I logged onto the cyber sphere, sent emails and watched porn. I got infected twice and had to get the thing wiped clean and reprogrammed. Once I logged on to a desktop picture of a burning skull that told me i needed to send 499$ to some number or other if I wanted to play. Eventually the power board died and I was reminded of the notion of built in obsolescence. The next was a HP 16 inch laptop which did well but its power board died too in the end but not before infections, viruses and bots had made themselves at home within microsoft’s software.
I then discovered Apple, a macbook air, which lasted for eight glorious and trouble free years until the keyboard tiles started to fall off and the batteries couldn’t hold a charge properly but I never had a virus, not once. But then, some sites were barred to me but no big deal.
Now I’m on an Ipad which is fine and dandy, and really all I ever needed. I remember Butterfly back in 2014 telling me I simply didn’t need a laptop but I was beguiled by the hardware. He was right though.
The current Ipad was a stopgap for my trip to Blighty last year and is perfectly adequate but I want a bigger screen and a decent backlit keyboard.
So the next device will be the Ipad Pro M2 12.9 inch screen with the magic keyboard.
With the lower tax rate here it comes out £300 cheaper than in the UK.
Let’s here it for Thailand !
Anyone remember ms dos? We used it to download gamma data from downhole drillhole surveys through the rods.at the end of the day we would stick the data on a formatted square disk but also print out a copy. What a crock of shit but perhaps the best that was available..I was working for riotinto back then so assumed they weren't mickey mousing it? I guess those square disks are sort of like people keeping there holiday snaps on slides then having slide nights. With there friends. I'm not a computer guy whatsoever but even back then I thought that tech was clunky and obsolete.
I've got the Samsung version of the same thing, I DON'T recommend it because of the size. It's not comfortable to hold in your hands for a long period of time. Mine stays on a stand unless I'm reading in bed.
However, oddly enough, I agree with your sentiment. If the people I work for didn't require me to have a laptop, I'd just use my tablet for everything, along with a keyboard and mouse. I would also recommend the Logitech MX mini keyboard rather than apple's magic keys stuff.
I would also suggest you take a look at Samsung's DEX, it's pretty cool and it's what I use when using my tablet as a productivity device. It's pretty much the same as using a PC.

It’s my Wee Man’s 8th Birthday on Saturday, which is easy to remember, being Remembrance Day.
He is going to get his first laptop.
Dell Lattitude 3460, upgraded to 16GB RAM and 480GB SSD.
6,790 baht.
Pretty good deal I reckon?
Lang may yer lum reek...
^ What's he gonna use it for?
Mine has a full (passed down) computer system set up with a (passed down) 55 inch TV, but uses the tablet for everything. Don't think it's been turned on in a month.
Everything being TikTok, Roblox, group video calls with friends every evening.
Games, tik-tok, YouTube. The usual.
His tablet’s a bit shit so I reckon he’ll make the transition.
It’s already got everything loaded on it.
GTA V story mode.
Hmm…
