the books are the observer series of pocket books, they each covered a single subject like cars, trees etc.

the 4 people are from a UK TV series called HOW, its was aimed at explaining stuff and covered all sorts of subject about how stuff worked etc. Apparently a new version was started in 2020

Apart from school trips I think my first trip broad was to France aged 17 and again 18 flew to Vienna

Life was easy pre the troubles, folks paid tickets and no visas ID docs needed until I got to New York where 5m from touch down to street with my meagre "wardrobe" luckily friends in NOHO and Brooklyn had all I needed until I visited the Apparel Liquidator near Wall Street for some "snazzy" gear, enuff my failing mammaries here some pix of Dublin Belfast stations Victoria long closed.

I've no idea either but didnt see much tv beofre 1972 and again 1976-82 as mainly on the move or in places there was nothin on.

FYI RSA didnt get tc til late and tehn of course under aprtheid in BLACK and WHITE!!

Heres a few of teh old comics that were on weekly on Irish and UK channels in 50s 60s most would seem lame, racist sexit or any other lable today, in an era when Black and Whie Minstres (blackface) was peek prime time BBC for some

Alf Garnett played changed all that with Til Death Us do part copied in USA as Archie Bunker

We all watched endless Lucie, Dick Van Dyke Bewitched drivel old Road to Movies with Bob Hope, the best wasPhil Silvers as Bilko a precursor to Arthur Daley and simialar loveable rogues or St Trinians ,Sellars, Bernard Cribbens caper movies.

Later there was Rowan and Martins Laugh In and in UK The Last of teh 1948 Show and the often overlooked Stanley Baxter way ahead of his time.

    Humour

until 1970s it was endless carry on Window cleaner movies or Radio

Few here will recall often ENSA trained comics of that era

Arthur Askey Ted Ray Stinker Murdoch Hattie JAcques and Eric Skyels later

Some radio shows are still discoverable

never a fan but Clitheroe Kid was teh 80s crankies

I did laugh at Hancock's half hour with wry witty monolgues which never improved in his few films

Round teh Horn had Ken Horn Moira Lister Kenneths Connors and Williams

and as a lover of all things maritime The Navy Lark with the caych phrase

LEFT HAND DOWN A BIT !!

Included Leslie Philips and very young slimmer Ronnie Barker too!
Do do do you remember?-1-jpgDo do do you remember?-2-jpgDo do do you remember?-3-jpg

There was also the Men from the Ministry a precursor of Yes Minister

Later came I'm sorry I'll read that again, Week Ending, The Day Today and long running faves , Jam Just a Minute and Desert Island Discs I am sorry haven't a clue.

Some of 1970S I was in Europe
Vreek de Jong, Jacques Tati and Grok

Dave Allen had his own show mainly proest anecdotes
    2 Ronnies
Morecambe and Wise all pretty tame

Ronnie Barker then excelled in Porridge with Fulton Mackay and young Richard Beckinsale. Kate's dad

Rising Dam with Leonard Rossiter and again Beckinsale nd Don Warrington who was probably the first regular Black comedian on UK tv

While later than Python the were still a barely drole cheapo sitcoms Butterflys, endless Terry and June, George and Mildred and the likes of Bernard Manning on the so called comedians
    Stan Boardman
    Frank Carson
Of that era Mick Miller is one of the few listenable.

By 1980 bar the Ronnies nearly all swept away by the new wave.

    The Young Ones
    Brass Eye
Not the Nine O' Clock News
    OTT
    Partridge and Men behaving Badly

I was outside UK but saw a bit of AbFab the Young Ones , Comedy store and Edinburgh Fringe with really innovative acts like Chris Lynam , Jerry Sadowitz, and the great Tunnel club hosted by Malcolm Hardy, like the Cambridge and Edinburgh fringe this was where new comics earned their spurs often writing for tv or radio too, Dick Vosbrugh, Bazza and Andy Hamilton wrote some very witty topical stuff.

Over the airwaves Jeremy Hardy , Mark Steel and late lamented Lynda Smith and many more I cannot recall at present

my gf's dad penned their first bio

In an era when 2 men in a double bed was just funny

^My Mother was a radio 2 fan, still have fond memories of cooking to the JY prog and listening to Wagonner's Wheel in the afternoons. It was a long time before the TV took over from the radio in our house. Family Favourites was also an absolute must over Sunday lunch.

It was quite normal for them to share a bed in TV scenes without the slightest sexual thought in those days.
