But neither of those things are appreciating assets, I feel your pain.
It surprises me as I knew a few wealthy Pikeys/ travellers back in the UK who were very much into quality timepieces.
What went wrong with you?
Tip - 10,000 bottles of that beer you drink will get you an ok watch.
10000 bottles of beer for a fucking watch
I don't agree. The battery operated quartz crystal watches are pretty accurate and I've always found them easier than the self winding watches. My wife hardly uses her Rolex, hates having to keep setting it, and prefers her Tissot quartz watch. She wants me to trade the Rolex in for similar watch for me but I'm not really interested. In fact we both prefer smart watches nowadays, especially since they update automatically when we are on the move.
As for pens, I do have some nice fountain pens although hardly enough to call a collection. I have a Cross Red Dragon, which I hardly ever use nowadays because the nib needs changing. I have a Mont Blanc Chopin Edition, which I use frequently as it has a really lovely nib. I also have a cheap Online one that I use daily because it has a bit of weight and good balance.
I was going to buy a Lamy Dialog because of the retractable nib. However, when I tried both versions I found them too small and lacked the right balance for my hand.
Not many people really 'need' a watch. Twenty years ago I thought that watches would be history by now because of mobile phones, but they're still popular with young people. I go out without a watch about half the time and wear one about half the time. When I am wearing a watch I check it, when I don't wear a watch I don't think about the time. It's not like I have a train to catch or anything.
i like watches, and have a collection of older mechanical watches. i appreciate the precision of the moving parts and the engineering required to produce them as well as the design aspect of a watch.
having the time on ones wrist is far more convenient than pulling a phone out of the pocket in order to check the time, but it's true that we dont really need watches these days, but my working days were governed by the clock and being aware of the current time is a habit i find hard to break.

whats not to like.
The watch my father bought me as a present in HK in 1977 was a fine automatic day/date Seiko that lasted for over 32 years needing only a periodic clean every five years or so. It finally died after a service from the watch people in Robinsons Sukhumvit Bkk in 2009.
I stick with a plain steel Swatch now but may treat myself to a Harold Pinchbeck Inigo Parchment on my next return to Blighty.
i have a day date seiko from 1984, bought during my first trip to thailand, it still functions and keeps perfect time.
one of these will probably be my next purchase.
One exception comes to mind and pub-bets could probably be won that this one even exists:
I believe it's the only battery powered Rolex ever made and that owners get free battery replacement forever. Have never seen one in the wild, they're not common!
I'm over my watch addiction and just own one Rolex now that's worn daily. But if the urge to buy one more quality timepiece kicked in and without spending a lot of money, this would definitely be it for about 4 grand:
^When they came out I came within an inch of buying that exact model on a distressed leather strap. They're stunning IMO. But at that time I'd just sold another Rolex and was still trimming the herd.
I bet you regret selling your Rollies. I know I do. The market went nuts during the covid lockdown. Most of us with some cash had nothing to do but buy shit.
Sadly, I sold off the Rollie herd before covid and went all in on Panerai. I am ok with it because I enjoy wearing those more than a Rolex. Too much attention from people I do not want to talk to. With a Panerai it is just guys in the know.

happynz quietly exits the chat with his Citizens, Orients and Seikos...
Backspin has also vanished after asking iceman to post pics of his watches…
This Rolex Milgauss homage by Benyar just arrived at my Aotearoa New Zealand address. My wife informed me on Facebook Messenger that it feels "heavy and solid". Here's her picture of it.
